In the Whistler backcountry I dig a snowpit and perform a compression test to check for unstable layers in the snowpack. My aim is to share basic knowledge and discuss avalanche safety for backcountry users, as the mountains in winter are a beautiful place to be. Learn about avalanches, take a safety course, and check forecasts at avalanche.ca
Thanks for watching!

Luke: Appreciate you taking the time to educate while showing off Whistler's beauty. Praying for a season where everyone makes it home.
Yep, same here!
1:36 Nina practicing digging her own snow pit too
she helped immensely
This is great information to know. Thanks for putting this together!
Beautiful video Luke.
Great video man! Definitely need to get my AST 1 done soon
I actually just got that shovel in the mail today so I'm stoked to see that it serves well in practical use.
Luke, your videos are awesome!! keep it up. I will keep my eye out for you in the backcountry.
Thanks Chad! This is shaping up to be an amazing winter!
I've just started learning about avalanche safety so this video is very well timed. Thanks Luke!
That's great, I hope you take a course and get out there!
@@lifeofluke yes for sure!
Another fantastic video.
I feel the beard frost too, been -30 in Alberta and even a quick pop outside for 30 seconds and I can feel my goat and stache frostin’ up at those temperatures.
Fellow Luke back again and very glad to see you back in action! Great video!
Thanks brother!
great vid dude, thanks for the good info
Thanks for sharing this knowledge, would definitely be awesome if you did another video on some other important winter backcountry safety tips if you have the time :) Thanks as always for all the content you put out and happy adventuring!
Good information Luke. Take care and stay safe.
Thank you for imformation about snow.happy New Year sir Luke.keep safe.
Thanks, happy new year Emily!
Awesome video Luke!
Not all hero's wear capes.
Thanks Scott!
Thanks Luke. Useful information mate!
Thanks Allan!
LOOKS DANGEROUS AF
Luke THANCK YOU for that knowledge to HELP keep people SAFE!!!
Nice! Would love to see more videos about avalanche safety. These are hard to find I recon.
Ya I'm definitely interested in doing more of these, I'd love to have some pros do a video with me
nice demo. 👍 do you sluff the pit in once done with the exam ? (for others safety)
Snow Pack looks good now dig in and camp the night that would be epic
Awesome video! What sort of results could be expected from such a test that would deem conditions unsafe?
sudden shearing on earlier numbers are a bad sign, anything breaking loose on the first 10 taps would be very fragile. Then there's other tests to see how widespread the fracture could propagate in the snowpack
@@lifeofluke gotcha. Thanks for the info! Very good to know 😊
What brand are those sunglasses? Smiths?
Smith wildcat
Love how you said it was an absolute beauty of a day and not too cold, meanwhile your mustache is frozen lmfao.
The joys of living in Canada!
P.S ignore the Gestapo responses on the current trucker situation and keep that chin up!
Thanks!
What I am most unsure of in reading compression, ECT, etc tests is what the thresholds are for associated risk while I gain experience in reading it. Do you personally have any recommendations? Although I understand my risk assessment is exactly that - my own. I understand what the tests convey; I don't know how to translate it into a risk assessment... Maybe i just need to do an AIARE 2
Whats that deep rumbling noise in the background? Are avalanches going off somewhere nearby ?
Important to mention, it is also important to choose a slope with similar angle of what you ski, that will give you a better idea of the propagation factor when the snowpack fail, and if it will slide or not. Especially when doing an extended column
Yes, definitely, thanks for pointing that out!
What decision did you make from your compression test as to the stability of the slope you wanted to ride?
Did someone hack your youtube banner or is thats what its always been?
The problem every snowpit video has is that nobody gives results. I'm not sure if everyone is too scared to give advices wether to go or not but I'll never learn to read it properly before it's too late if it's down to own experience.
Like here, would you ski that or not? Was this result a steady snowpack or was it conserning?
This spot where I dug the pit was stable and low risk for a slide, but that's just one specific location, it could change a lot just a short distance away depending on aspect, elevation, and slope angle. It's just one data point
How long did it take for you hike back up to take your camera back for the last shot? lol
a while haha
What shovel is that

@@lifeofluke cheers buddy nice video
you have a little something, something on your moustache.
thanks for catching that
