Jinjing The Penguin - Swims 5000 Miles Every Year To Visit The Man Who Saved Him

- This is a story about Jinjing the South American Magellanic Penguin, that swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.
The rescued Penguin was saved by João Pereira de Souza, a 73 year old part-time fisherman, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Joao found the tiny penguin, at his local beach lying on rocks, it was covered in oil, could barely move and was close to death.
Joao cleaned the oil off the penguin's feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to build his strength. He named the penguin Jinjing.
Every year the Penguin leaves to the breeding grounds and then returns to Joao.

*As one viewer "corisco tupi" stated* - The fact that English-speaking news sources misspell the portuguese language nickname given by the Brazilian fisherman, should not come as a surprise. "DinDin" pronounced by a Brazilian with an accent from Rio will sound like "JinJin" to American ears, hence the confusion.
*Camilla wrote in the comments 22/1/21* - The name is spelt Dim-Dim, (although it's pronounced JinJin, you have to write it with d. Because J in portuguese has a different pronunciation.
*Q4) Title says he swims 5000 miles, but you're not sure* - Correct they are not sure, but it is presumed he swims 5000 miles round trip from Joao to breeding grounds and back.
*Q5) I thought Penguins only lived in cold places like Antarctica* - No they live all over the southern hemisphere, including Victoria Australia where temperatures get up to 45 degrees.

I hope if the penguin has to die first, it comes back and dies with the man. It would be too sad if he just waited for the penguin not knowing if it died or something else happened. At least if the man dies first his family will be there and later the penguin will understand he is gone.

Jinjing is a very sweet, adorable and friendly penguin who comes to visit the friend who saved his life. A very remarkable and precious penguin who is grateful to the man taking care of him at a time when he needed help.
It doesn’t surprise me at all that Jinjing travels 5,000 miles to be with his dear friend. Animals are like that, very grateful and never forget those who treat them in time of need. Going so far is actually really dangerous for penguins because leopard seals can move extremely fast in the water. Despite that, he comes to see Joao every single year without fail. That is truly amazing

So I’ve been studying African penguins (very closely related cousins of the penguin in the video) for my senior thesis and I’ve had some experience working with them. Penguins form very strong bonds with their trainers and can recognize the people they know. They can become very affectionate and it’s one of the coolest things I’ve experienced having a penguin recognize me and get excited for your attention it’s amazing. I’m assuming the penguin in this video basically sees the man as it’s mate. Which is why it travels so far to see him. Fun fact, penguins really don’t discriminate when looking for a mate, so gay penguins are really common and it’s adorable. In captivity they don’t have to worry about hunting, so all they do all day is cuddle and preen each others heads, so some of them have little bald spots because they cuddle too much lol. Our penguins are part of a species survival plan for anyone wondering why they are in captivity. Keeping them from extinction 🥲

Quite the self-sufficient creature. No human can come even close to the abilities the penguin displays: able to navigate, fish, and interact as a friend with another species. It would be great to know that no matter what happened to me financially, I would be able to jump into the ocean and travel if necessary to almost any point on the globe. Not only is this penguin able to navigate and fish, but it can also evade predators -- it really knows how to do stuff -- it is better at what is important than any human by far and if not for the stupidity and carelessness of whoever spilled that oil, the penguin would have never had to rely on anyone else. A superior being as are many animals, like the birds who can literally fly over the Himalayas, deal with the cold, find food, mate and then return.

8 thousand kilometers is really impossible, I don't know how that penguin managed to accurately locate his savior's whereabouts. Just imagine how many days it would take him to get there and have to swim continuously in the dangerous open sea without even stopping to eat and rest? God save that penguin!

How impressive the fact that he manages to be back at the precise beach after a so long journey from deep South America. I'm a Rio de Janeiro state native and do affirm that Rio state southern coastline is very irregular. It is quite difficult to pinpoint a specific beach amid a multitude of islands, inlets, bays, coves, beaches, etc. How proficient is that little guy!
