    Thank you Sue, it makes sense to me and thank you for your response. I am still learning the proper process to the effect I am looking for. Good to know that the first lay I won't have to grind. Simplifies my process if I want the layered water, fur look. Always learning and always putting on bandages. Thanks from Northern Onatrio

    This is a wonderfully simplistic video Sue, thank-you so much for sharing. The art of mosaic can be daunting for those of us who are new to it, but this video showed me how easy it can be to cut the glass to get the results you need. Im excited to begin my project and I’m looking forward to more of your “How to” videos 😊

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 6 lety

      Hi Sharon, I do not grind the edges in my work, it is designed for the garden so I only use 1 layer and the grout will ensure the sharp edges are covered and safe. You can add a second layer but I would always advise that you grind the edges before adhering, then grout where needed. I use a silicone based adhesive. Sue

    Love the helpful video Sue. How would you blunt the edges of such tiny pieces? Would a hand metal thing work?

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 4 lety

      squange20 hello. Why do you need to blunt the edges? As this is for mosaic you would normally grout, that covers sharp edges. If you do not want to grout then yes you Would need to grind the edges or put behind glass. If you do want to do all the edges and you don’t have an electric grinder you can use a small grinding stone, glass sandpaper, although that gets worn down very quickly, or a diamond sanding block. I think metal file might be a bit too harsh for the glass and chip it rather than sand it. Whichever method you choose use water when you’re grinding glass it helps keep it smooth.

    • @squange20
      @squange20 Před 4 lety

      @@SueSmithGlassMosaics Thanks for the helpful advice Sue. It would be mostly for mosaics, so I guess I won't need to sand down, which is time-saving.

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 4 lety +1

      squange20 when you’ve grouted and cleaned run a soft cloth, like a yellow duster, over the surface, it will catch on any sharp edges sticking up. You can just gently grind that sticky up bit, I use a small piece of oil stone.

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 6 lety +1

      To be honest I never use compound nippers, I find the wheeled one more versatile. I doubt very much you could achieve a similar shape with the compound ones. It is the curve of the wheeled blades that gives you the movement in the glass, those lovely curves.

    Sue what glue are you using for your wave pieces? How hard is it to grout them?

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Morning Lib, I change the glue according to the base. So I use silicone for mirror and a clear construction adhesive for clear glass. If you have a look at the news articles on my website, bottom of the homepage, you will see one about adhesives although I know brands may not be available over there.
      The main thing with the adhesive is to make sure there is enough to ‘bed’ in the glass in place but not so much that it oozes up and block up all the gaps. If you do use too much scoop it out while wet with a sharpened bamboo skewer or similar. Then you should have no trouble grouting as normal.

I’ve cut whispy white clouds and have blue whispy for the sky which I’ll cut into wavy 20mm wide lengths. Marine Breter don’t know is the quick answer but I guess it depends on drill size and pressure you use. I’m sure you know to keep the glass wet as and where you are drilling? Give it a go. Would love to see the results. Sue.

  • @deliveryfailure4196

    That came off all wrong. When I suggested that something might be left out to keep newer mosaic artists from knowing certain things, I meant that your work (and I've watched many more vids than just this one) is great, not something that can easily be taught.... It was meant to be read in a joking tone (but there's a lack of context in comments, so it's difficult to portray). I apologize if I came off as rude. I am, however, still confused as to how the glass can be placed so close together, because I'm self-taught and still learning.

    Sue how do I do a sky for a yacht scene with water waves as foreground?

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi Libwade, you can choose different shades. So the water can be darker blues, greens & turquoise. Then the sky could be lighter blues, streaky whites, clear textured. You can also change the cutting for the sky so it could be in bigger pieces or smaller chunks. But also the horizon usually has a very thin dark line so you could put that in and then continue in the same style/shape of glass cuts just changing the shades slightly.
      Once you‘ve added your horizon you could start the sky area with a very pale hint of tint blue and as it gets higher start adding darker blues. Of course if it’s sunset or sunrise you can add pinks, whites yellow, oranges, red, purples.
      I will often add a line of clear textured or streaky white give impression of soft clouds or dissipating jet streams .

    Wait... Where's the gluing down and grouting part? I mean, I hit like on the video, but this is lacking in the finishing aspect. Those glass pieces are WAY too close together for a true grout finish. I truly hope that certain aspects of mosaic work aren't left out on purpose.

    • @SueSmithGlassMosaics
      @SueSmithGlassMosaics  Před 6 lety +6

      Delivery Failure ....it is only a ‘cutting’ guide for mosaic...quite clearly stated in the title. You can use these pieces in any way you wish, with tile adhesive/thin set or silicone, UV adhesive...on glass, wood , terracotta..grouted or not grouted, you can even cover in epoxy resin...it is entirely up to you what you do with them after cutting. It is not a trick and nothing to be rude about and I admit to curiosity about the suspicion of something being ‘left out on purpose’ in your comment...this is just me giving you my time for a free guide to cutting glass the way I do. As for the gaps being “WAY too close together”, that really depends on what quality of grout you use, I have been in business for nearly 20 years, selling hundreds of mosaics every year, trust me, the gaps are fine.

If you would like to see examples of how I use them, you only need to ask and I will happily show you, or look at the dozens of examples on my website: suesmithglass. However, just to clarify, I was asked to make a film of how I cut these long thin strips.
