How to Shadow Anatomy

- This is a quick tutorial about adding shadows to anatomy. The hardest part of making lighting on figures work is getting a consistent lighting across the entire figure. I show examples using very simple shapes, and then show the same lighting on more complex versions of the same anatomical shapes. Hopefully you can see how thinking about lighting in the most simple and broad terms can create cohesion for your figure shadowing.

That ZHC dude now only do custom iPhone Drawing and it sucks !
@@spikespiegel3197 yep some of his videos slowly turin cringe
You dare mention that wanna be's name in a holy place like this!?
@@theco-fownder9262 fax
ZHC used to be an awesome artist channel. Now he’s become a Mr Beast clone, and I don’t think he even draws anymore
I didn’t even realize you were uploading now. Yesss. This is awesome I love your art.
Thank you Sisilio!
Hell yes Mr Finch! I'm absolutely over-the-moon about the fact that you're uploading consistently now! Not only that, but tutorials as well? You are a legend
having grown up reading your comics, it is SO cool to see behind-the-scenes of the art that’s inspired me for so long. thanks for making these videos!
If you had told me back when I first watched your Gnomon DVD I still wouldn’t be as good as you in ten years, I might have been disheartened. Your draftsmanship was so inspiring, I’ve been studying your work off and on for a decade. Luckily, I practiced for so long I forgot about the goal and drawing is just a thing I do now. So cool you’re down to earth enough to release lessons. I hope more is coming. Thanks a million!
So happy to have your videos on CZcams. Thank you!
D Finch man thank you for taking the time to teach as well as provide us with such incredible art on a regular basis. Much appreciated!
Very informative video Dave! Shadows are always a tough thing for me to get right on my characters. This tutorial made perfect sense. Thank you very much for creating this great content and can't wait for the next one! :)
Thanks Robert! And thanks for earlier on. I really have forgotten a lot, and I got a lot out of talking about arms.
@@DavidFinchartist Happy to help where I can. Your tips on foreshortening and perspective were super helpful. You’re a great teacher!
ROOOOOOOOB!!!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!
@@DavidFinchartist your Magneto at 0:13 is awesome! What comic/issue was that featured in?
@@lawrenceinsley4114 It is featured on ULTIMATUM series. Written by Jeph Loeb and art by the great David Finch.
Watching how you put in the vein at 5:20 made me smile - so much extra dimension with such a (seemingly) simple technique! Bravo.
Wow. Watching you draw and comment on why you made the adjustment is extremely helpful. Like drawing the drawing the basic shape and then partially erase it only to finish it off. I’m trying that right now. Thank you.
These videos are all about “everything you need to know and no one will never tell you, who knows why”.
Thank you, your videos are all I ever wanted to know.
Keep it up!!!
Wow this has helped me so much! I couldn't see the mistakes you mentioned in my art before this, so thank you so much , I'm a huge fan of your work by the way, I'm glad to see you starting up this channel 😁🔥
Wow! This was really helpful. You teach really well David. I'm also glad that your video quality is really good. ❤
love your stuff man, you're incredible - thanks so much for giving back on utube!
man i have been waiting for an upload from you for years. your back your finally back. i cant wait to see what else that you have in store.
Holy crap the best artist in the business, and someone who’s style I accidentally emulated, is now doing tutorials?! This is the best news I’ve heard all day
In my opinion, the best comicbook art style is Travis Charest's
Saga Draws good luck, I’ve been drawing for 4-5 years and it’s been somewhat of a roller coaster ride, you have ups and downs, my best advice is to not copy others work but to do your own and make your own unique style and experiment with it and take your time, study anatomy and shadowing and how light bends around an object, do different characters and styles e.g realistic, comic book, concept art, anime, portraits e.t.c.
Best of luck my friend.
God bless
French comic artist also have excellent drawing skill. For exemple, Moëbius was pretty famous in USA for his scfi universe, but he begandrawing a western serie called Lieutenant Blueberry which is certainly one of the most impressive one you could ever read.
The experience really shows... I can do the same shadows as you but it wont look as confident, just because you have been doing this so long it's become second nature. man, what an inspiration !
Thank you for these videos David, your work truly inspires me.
Thank you for this. I just turned on notifications so I will receive your posts to-the-minute updates. This inspired me to unearth your comic art tutorials from years back and I discovered content I purchased from your website I had forgotten about. This is awesome. Looking forward to future posts.
I know your professional work but just found your channel. I've been binge watching and I'm amazed! I used to draw and when I was younger I thought I'd draw comics for a living. But as I got older, I lost my imagination. I began to draw more "still life" or photos even. But ive even stopped doing that (due to life and stuff). But watching you draw makes me feel like a kid again. As I see your picture take shape I get all "gitty" and find myself giggling with enjoyment!
You make me want to start sketching again!! Thanks so much for the inspiration!
You're one of my favorite artists, thank you for these tips!
Mr. Finch you are THE master! Thankyou for sharing with us.
That was amazing, I have always wondered how you drew such beautiful pencil work, now I can see how. Please keep up the good work.
Another top video, this is something I need to work on in my work so this was very very helpful, thanks again for your time.
Great tutorial, Dave! Im going to use this to help me with the piece l'm working on now. Thanks 😊
Thanks, this is the thing that I always try to analyze from your art, since it looks so sick
The modern master of shadow and hatching. Thank you Finch.
So insane to see my artistic hero’s from my youth give tutorials-When I was a 12 y/o kid I wouldn’t have even fathomed such a thing!
This is definitely what I needed rn, Im really struggling on how to put shadows on my figures. Thus is very helpful Thank you.
You're one of my favorite artists out there now! Love that you have a channel
I learn so much from your videos. Please keep them going.
This is super helpful . I think I speak for everyone here when I say : thank you so much !!!! Keep it up
Thank you for this!
I'm just learning colouring now, and this is a whole lot of help!
Shading is one of the most important topics n helps bring your flat subject to life. This video will for sure help me!!! More shading/rendering stuff please
Your artwork is out of this world. Thank you for sharing your process!
amazing and your articulation is so easy to understand. Thank you
One of the most helpful videos I've ever watched. Thanks.
You are a great teacher. I learn so much. Hoping this channel grows.
Amazing chance to learn the secrets of drawing with one of the best artists of the world!! Many thanks David for sharing your skills with us! Great video!! :)
Thank you for the sharing. Hope to continue to learn more with your videos.
Fantastic! You guys inspired me to start sketching again, these videos are great to get the old noodle arm back in shape and learn some new techniques!
Apprentices around the world! Behold!
Take the greatest pleasure in your study and appreciate this blessed knowledge
Amazing talent. Amazing drawings. I absolutely love those kind of extremely detailed pages at the beginning (right before they get inked I guess).
I just regret I have never had (and never will have) the patience to do those kinda of detailed drawings. I usually only spend a few minutes on a drawing, then stop, watch what I've done and deem it fit to be thrown to the trash can.
Thank you for your artworks and for your talent. Cheers from France.
I'm a visually kinesthetic learner. Meaning i have to actually see what i'm trying to learn, annalise it, then do it myself. So this genuinely helped me better understand shadow for a figure, as well as how to better draw those figures. (I may have accidentally analyzed how you draw the figures for penciling, then figured out how to put that into ink. Now i just need to practice it.)
Learning straight from the master 🙏
love your work. also....you have a way of explaining and showing examples that many others don't. just subscribed. Great job!!!
David Finch, do you always inspire me to draw, thanks
Thanks David not in all the tutorials teach the shadows in the anatomy as you do, for those of us who are learning this is a delicacy
Thank you very much for the advice and examples. Easy to follow along and explained well. Again thanks sir!!!!
The best video about drawing shadows. Thank you.
thank you mr finch!! this tutorial was incredibly helpful, i hope you continue to upload. have a nice day :)))
Fantastic video! This will help me so much! Thanks!

Great tutorial and quality, Dave🤘
It's so darn fun to watch you draw as well 😁
Please keep this Coming , love ur work
I appreciate this informative video. Since I don't want to miss upcoming content, I am subscribed. The rendering was sublime; it reminds me of sculpture.
What a great video, man. Thank you.
Been a fan of your shadowing
Really solid teaching here David.
Great quick lesson. Thanks for sharing!
Incredibly helpful, thanks so much for doing these, I hope to see many more!
HUGE help. Thank you so much for this !!!!!
Thank you Mr. Finch, for inspiration and instruction! I was into comics and drawing back in the 90´s but I stopped couple of years before the first X-men-film came out (I live in finland and floppies were pretty rare here, most (mostly Marvel, some DC) comics were trades, compiled by the finnish publisher from all over the place (i.e. "X-Men" was basically a "best of" collection from every X-title from the late 80s to mid-90s, and it was impossible to follow...)
I started drawing again 18 months ago, since Chris Nolan's DK-trilogy got me slowly back into comics. The Snyder/Capullo-run on Batman changed me from a Batman-fan who used to like Daredevil, Wolverine and Punisher to a Batman-fan who loves all things DC-related and likes some things Marvel-related.
I'm 33yrs old so the fact that I'm a guitarist, first and foremost, it helps a lot since I've trained myself to practice new things. To some extent I know what to practice but it's getting harder and harder. Shading has been hard as ****.... So thank you!
Wow.. I was shocked when I saw the notification thanks for the video
I can’t believe I just found these videos, amazing. I wish I’d known earlier. I’m working on a small group indie comic right now and I’m applying as much of this as I can now.
Great lesson. I understand this but have not been able to implement it. Thanks
for new inspiration.
So good! This really helped me understand shadow shapes. Thanks a bunch
So many years thinking I was shading a detail things wrong. But nope I was on the right path thank you.
I totally understand what you mean when you said that you’re a “lazy artist.” I’m the same way myself. The less work I have to do, the better.
Thanks for this and I'm so looking forward to more!
Kick ass tutorial. Very helpful thank you .
Yes! Great video, hopefully new artists can get this and practice up!
man you are amazing i hope you can keep uploading .... thanks for the wonderful content
Thank you for this Mr. Finch!

This was a very detailed explanation, sir. Thank you for this video, it will help out a lot.
thank you so much for uploading the videos!...love your art!
And THAT is one big reason why, "Learn your anatomy" is usually one of the first pieces of advice you hear when learning to draw figures.
Amazing tutorial keep them coming 👍🏼👍🏼
