  • Briggs and Stratton engine strip down and rebuild time lapse. This is the narrated version of how to rebuild a mower engine. This lawnmower engine rebuild is a 4 horsepower Briggs and Stratton built on the 2nd February 2001
    Engine Code: 010202
This is part one of an engine rebuild short series. In this lawnmower engine rebuild video we are tearing down the mower, inspecting and checking for any damage and then I will rebuild it again in the next part of this engine rebuild short series.

Job well done. I've torn hundreds of these engines apart and am sitting well for spare parts. How they go together again, who the hell knows.

I just ordered a gasket set for a Briggs flathead I’ve got on a mower I picked off side of road. Engine runs great but excited to practice disassembling, measuring crankshaft journal for wear and reassembling. Had a chance to practice lapping the valves and removing about 2 thou off the exhaust valve stem too which was fun!

Thanks, I disassembled a quattro like this to clean it and then waited and waited for a new head gasket to arrive, foolishly thinking reassembly should be a doddle - ended up with the two flywheel guards hanging around and wasn't able to figure out how they re-attached! A slow-mo of this let me see the position and fixings - thanks!

That engine is a dead giveaway because of the air filter on it. They had both metal and later plastic ones that are both the same shape. But I can't get over the size of the muffler and huge heat guard on this thing. Here in Australia I ended up with a cheaper US version of this engine with like a tuna tin sized muffler.

Please... what size are they, and how did you get them off? I'm guessing you had the same problem and that's why the video is clipped just before this point?
Edit: Ignore that. I've just watched another video, and I don't need to unscrew these bolts. The filler tube lifts out (pulls up) along with the starter coil. Only an issue if the filler tube itself is broken.
