What disgusts me even more is the fact that she was forced to do this by the company she worked for Pretty messed up how they made her do blackface against her will
@@Rapztress She was 15, she was sexually abused on Hollywood, forced to smoke and get drugged, and being quiet about, it was pretty common those days because you were slaved by producers and filmakers, remember it was the damn 20's-30's, hard days worldwide, you're blessed to live in this generation, alot of these millenial kids would have ended worse than her
Don't you dare let anyone forget how people were perceived, treated, spoken of, and portrayed back then. They had the magic to produce films and preserve stories, and this is what they chose to create. Edit: People in the comments are why we should never forget this. Sorry your hearts are so full of hatred.
It's hard to sort out "who started it" and "did it ever stop" People can show how someone else told them to And people can show how they all were just going with what's popular and they all only meant to make a living. There's a reason that the world that produced this, leads up to WW2. And Hitler didn't have his ideas on his own. He heard them from Henry Ford who heard them from someone else. Conspiracy theories just spreading. And getting out of hand. I pity that people got hurt real bad by it. But honestly it's hard to figure out how to fix the world. They thought they were being either good, or funny. They thought the horrors were over so it was time to relieve stress and make parodies. Thought they'd freed the slaves and deserved a break from war. That just movies isn't so bad. And they were ignorant of some things and just accepting of other things. But really, its the same today. The bottom is poorer than the middle realizes. It's not over. Parodies can hurt feelings and come across as cringe and callous and tone deaf. Other people do worse. It's all messed up. And sometimes they want to represent things but they're too dumb to do it accurately and it reveals not even as much their hate but their ignorance. Like.....the way William Shatner overacts his lines. When you see it on Family Guy you see how absurd it really is. There was a time that a lot of people thought this was real. There was a time a lot of people thought this was progress. Which makes one wonder: what if right now, what we have today isn't good enough, and will one day look just as embarrassingly cringe? It feels unnecessary to assume hate if ignorance would seem to explain it completely. Oh real people still get hurt by the cringe even if it comes out of ignorance more than hate.
rewatching this again. poor girl. she got so much hate for something truly disgusting that she was forced to do. what a utter shame. crazy how times have changed.
@@JakeKoenig The movie is a social commentary on blackface. The point sailed over that empty noggin of yours. Does your head make maraca noises when you shake it? Cuz there ain’t but a few skittles and some pocket lint in there!
I admire the way you expressed this. "Grotesque" is an excellent word choice. This clip broke my heart--such heaven in her voice and such an ugly hell behind it as a performance I noticed that her performance here lacked the over-the-top enthusiasm so typical of blackface actors during "happy"/upbeat songs. I don't know enough about Garland to know if she typically brought that underlying distance/melancholy to her roles, but here it adds an extra layer of unease. Everything about this clip feels like a metaphor and a juxtaposition--on one end social horror, on the other personal tragedy. Heartbreak in 2 minutes.
For those of you who are saying “she still had a choice to do this performance” there are a few things you should know: Back then when an actor signed a contract(especially a child actor), the studios had control over everything on them including their bodies(many actresses were even forced to get abortions; Judy garland is thought to be one of them). In addition to this, Judy had an abusive stage mom(and her father had been dead for a year at this point). If she refused to perform this she could’ve 1. Been beaten by her abusive mother 2. Fired from MGM leaving her entire family without money, and her mother would’ve definitely abused her 3. Be beaten by her mother AND drugged into submission. For all we know she could’ve been heavily drugged here. She was forced to take drugs and alcohol throughout her entire career to get her to perform the way the producers wanted her to. Edit: I'm disgusted by the amount of people responding to this comment who are saying this blackface doesn't matter anymore because there are no more slaves. Educate yourself on how these mindsets become systematically ingrained into our society and laws; leaving the after-effects to generations to come. I am also discouraged by the people who assume only the worst,, especially without doing their research. Whether you would like to believe it or not, I 100% understand where you are coming from, and where your mindset is. But if you have no experience being indoctrinated by any ideology or bigotry, I highly suggest you educate yourself. You cannot hold people accountable for things they did when they were children, yet alone things they did before they had un-indoctrinated themselves.
@@jeffbrehove2614 Yep. It's so fascinating that even at the tender age of 14 her voice was still very polished and refined. Just goes to show how truly talented Judy Garland was. This cruel world did not deserve her at all. 👠👠🌈❤
Judy garland was drugged, threatened and forced by contract to do everything she has ever done including the wizard of oz, so your childhood would be ruined anyways.
It's really sad. It's all her mother's fault. Her mom made her be in the entertainment business, and then MGM forced her to do drugs, blackface, etc. One of the producers sexually harassed her too. But she didn't know any better. :(
Reading the comments I'm glad people actually know Judy Garland's history It's sad that she had to do this because she was under contract but her voice is very beautiful My opinion the reason why this hasn't really gotten any attention in Media is because people are aware and very vocal about what Judy Garland went through and they would go after the studio's instead At least that's what I hoped would happen
as a black person, I don't think it's her fault. she was exploited and was unwillingly on dr*gs. chances are she genuinely didn't want to do this so they dr*gged her or she could've been overwhelmed. I mean look at her eyes they look so dead
I blame the studio and the adults around her. She was a child contract player, she was legally obligated to do what they told her. She was fed on a diet of chicken broth and was put on an aggressive regime of uppers and downers to maintain her weight and keep her working. She didn’t even have a choice to keep her first pregnancy and was forced into an abortion. As an adult she was a big supporter of civil rights, she donated to the families of the little blk girls who were unalived in a church bombing, fought for the Nicholas Brothers and other black entertainers.
Oh you’re so cringe stfu. You really think we would bring back blackface in for any reason let alone because they simply take a video down. I’m not saying we should take the video down but don’t act like we’ll return to the 30s or 40s.
I can’t believe anyone ever thought this was OK. Happy to see people acknowledging that Judy was forced into doing this, and many other things, to stay employed. Great vocals, if you can get the visuals out of your head.
Considering she was actually a tool by the industry, that terribly hung her dry in her darkest hours, I won't hold this against her. Just by looking at her eyes, I can tell her heart is not in it the same way it was in Meet Me in St. Louis' or the Wizard.' Not saying it's right..just saying we know what really' initiated this. Still a fan because she was an underdog like me.
It's called virtue signaling everyone in Hollywood does it. If she hated it so much she wouldn't have refused to do it it's not like she had a pistol put to her head. Besides back then this was totally normal and today we have movies like white chick's so what's the difference? The only thing I that really could be called offensive is the white lips otherwise she's doing an impression of a young black girl from the south. This performance if taken in it's intended context isn't really that bad, it's sort of like a man singing in drag if you ask me.
yeah this is a top result for "wicked witch" for some reason.... which is the moniker of some goofball Scientologist "celebrity" whose CZcams account i'm trying to find
In addition to the obvious issues, Judy's appearance, the makeup, the costume, the expressions, are like something from a horror film. This clip is monstrous.
This was very common representation of black people in that time. Many people today look back at Amos and Andy and see it as racist but it’s downright modern compared to the horrific blackface portrayals. At least Amos and Andy depicted them as actual normal humans and they were usually played by actual black people.
@@haruruben Yes, the whole display is awful. But there's something disturbing about Judy's performance specifically to me. The movements, the facial expressions, the weird eyes. She seems deranged or zombie like to me. I could barely watch the whole video.
For people who are saying Judy is racist, enjoyed this, or was fine with this since it was normal in this time period need to stop. Judy was *forced* into doing these things under the rigid contract of the studio and her own mother, which is incredibly difficult to resist especially for child actors and in a time period where children had very little autonomy. And just because blackface was common and normalized didn't mean people were okay with it everywhere. Slavery was common and there were people who opposed it even when it was happening, normalization ≠ agreement. And Judy was a notorious Civil Rights activist, she was forced into a racist role. And you can see in her expression she didn't like it, people may think she did but she was an actress, she had to act like she did for the studio but you can tell she didn't if you bother to actually look, such as the lifelessness in her eyes
Indeed, we can't just ignore a part of history just because it was obscure. Insted we should watch these videos to learn from our ancesters mistakes and do better
After looking at Judy’s entire history, I just feel so horrible for her and everything she had to live through until her death. She really didn’t deserve any of that. Edit: Jesus Christ, I think I might’ve started WWIII here

This was the time of “Pigskin Parade”, so she was 12 or 13. Even as an adult she had to do what the studio told her to, so it’s pretty obvious she’s not to blame for this awfulness. Her singing voice is extraordinary, my word. No wonder they signed her, too bad they didn’t know what to do with her.

Many people may not realize that, in America's past, African-Americans were not allowed in films (or on radio stations). There were no black actors or actresses (or black professional athletes). Our country had segregation which included having restrooms for "Whites Only". So, the only way to have a film with a black character was for a white performer to do the role in blackface. Judy Garland may not have even seen this as distatsteful as we do today. She was doing her job as an actress. I am not saying this was right, just reminding people to take it easy on Judy Garland.
@@josbar2835 What are you talking about??? Just look at movies from that era you will see MANY famous black actors during segregation: Sidney poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Hattie McDaniels... She probably thought nothing of it, other than a great break and opportunity. Blackface was a standard part of American entertainment back then. Let's not project our 21st century social posturing with how people thought and felt in the 1930s. If you were there, you'd have thought and felt the exact same way as the majority of people at the time.

Garland not only objected to blackface, she didn't care to perform swing music at all. At the time she said, "I'd rathed be singing opera, but they tell me that swing is where the money is." Dick Cavett once asked acclaimed Oscar winning actor Gale Sondergaard if she objected to making silly movies like "The Spider Woman". She told him she was under contract and she did what she was told to do. Under the studio system, actors were property.
Preferring opera to swing is pretty racist. Then again, performing swing or blues as a white person is evil appropriation. You see where this goes? The white person is DEFINED so as to make being good impossible.

This certainly isn’t the “Black National Anthem!” and it sure does nothing for Judy Garland’s character! It shows how acceptable this image of black people was among white America! It wasn’t okay then and although black people have surpassed the sting of kinda this ignorance, it’s still unacceptable! Lots of across and actresses were against black face, but were forced to do it by their companies. An actress of the same generation as Judy was forced to do black face for an advertisement, but when interviewed about it, she said she did not want to do it and wished she stuck to her fine about not doing it. An actor of an earlier generation said the same thing about a part he did in a movie.

Remember that Judy had no choice in what roles she took. She was a child when this was filmed and in those days actors were under contract with a single studio. She did whatever they told her or she would have never worked in Hollywood again.

I pity that people got hurt real bad by it. But honestly it's hard to figure out how to fix the world.

@George Costanza Its a mockery making fun of someone. What was the point of her being in blackface.....could her talent not carry it?
@@jyt74 Your comment just won the internet today.

Our country had segregation which included having restrooms for "Whites Only". So, the only way to have a film with a black character was for a white performer to do the role in blackface. You know you want to be angry at anyone for racism look to the governments ,we were fine in our tribes before they came along ,well everything was fine ,we looked after everyone, the land ,visitors from other tribes and nations, look around today see the state of everything, poverty, sickness, racism, pollutants especially our seas we always looked after everything and everyone, now we under rule look at the damage to our planet, the violence, depression need I go on . And are not things supposed to be better under a government I would say it very scary at the times we live in. When you listion to people who have been traumatized by governments who declared war, stripped people of their culture threw them into towns and cities and make us function this ridiculous way of life ,who is to blame?,people are realising and moving back into nature away from governments who in my opinion have caused all the damage. No one is happy well those under a government ,and they force their unjust way of life on us. When I heard that once governments brought over Africans into America they had a water fountain that said blacks and whotes WHATON EARTH,blacks was not allowed to drink from the white man's fountain, how disgraceful and quite shocking to me ,we are all God's creatures . I feel for everyone over the centuries for how badly they have been treated as they are all God's creatures equal whether a human,a fly a forest a stream even a speck of dust as this was all created all has a use and all must be respected. Alot of people are forced to do what they don't want to do and we give them backlash ,that is making a mockery of Judy and insulting her as a human being. No one would want to be part of that and I bet even she had nightmares I feel sick watching it ,it is the first and last time for me. There is so much we do against our will,or we are repressed ,not even being able to speak our minds without being made to believe even our thoughts are wrong. I'm fed up with the world and it has got to the stage rich or poor this is now a very depressing planet to live on ,God created a happy human,a beautiful planet, enough for every man's need not his greed. I know all this for fact I'm a shaman and see how we functioned before a rule ,and I will not be repressed I will say it how it is I will not be silenced like everyone else ,I would be willing to be thrown in jail for speaking up ,about time everyone said enough is enough, many can see we just spiraling downwards no way out ,you all need to make your lives better ,you don't need to be ruled and keep putting up with the madness around you ,do you not see where it is leading, those gone back into nature ate so happy ,spiritually fulfilled ,stress free ,different people who are no longer lost.

Judy was known as a huge civil rights activist and no doubt had no interest in the slightest in performing this heinous role - she was drugged and starved until the companies she was under were satisfied that she’d do what they needed her to do. A lot of this contributed to her issues with drugs that led to her demise and overdose.
