Best quote about Judy Garland: "She didn't sing a song, she inhabited it." She was only 23 in 1945 !! Her voice carried a hundred years of emotion, pain, passion, and perfection. She was in a league by herself. And still is.

This is 1954, not '45. Despite that, one could make a strong case that she was the greatest non-classical singer of the 20th century.

I wholeheartedly agree!!! People laugh when I tell them Judy is 1 of my 2 favorite vocalists of all time! Her range, pitch, power- unmatched and unrivaled.. yes, she was in a class of her own back in her day, and the mark she left behind will never fade. She didn't just sing a song.. she took it, threw it up, threw it down, flipped it, and turnt it inside out! Ability and talent of her caliber is rare indeed..

Yes, she did get addicted to drugs and put on some weight but maybe if she had had a bit more love and understanding from an early age, which idiots like you seem incapable of showing, then she may have survived longer and been even more capable of greater things .She has never ever been mediocre - SHE WAS A LEGEND FOR GOODNESS SAKE!! Gone astray

@@ronnieyoung2075 You need an ear adjustment. There is no comparison. Judy was working with way better music and instrumentation for one thing and Whitney, who I liked very much, did not have the same degree of emotional delicacy balanced against power that Judy had. Whitney was all power. And, she used too much melisma for my taste...very popular with pop singers but waaay overused...comes across as a gimmick. Having said all that, Whitney was one of the best pop singers of modern times but still not Judy.

Let's park the acting, the command, the technique, the truth. They're all a given. Let's consider for a moment the musician. She knows that this is a deathless classic. The fourth beat of the melodic phrases repeatedly up the emotional ante. She knows that, even on a fourth-beat word, such as 'the' or 'for', it's the key to unlock this great song's mounting intensity. She's not afraid to open those insognificant words up, on the vowel, in order to fill the sails for what follows. The musicians know that too, and she knows that they know, and what I find so very moving are her countless glances of gratitude, of humour even, of collusion, of ''Thank you, boys, for supporting me' which pepper this outstanding performance by an outstanding artist in what is, for me, her most outstanding performance. Thank you, CZcams, Alexandra, for putting this up.

From back in the days when you actually needed vocal talent to be star. No auto-tune, no backing tracks, no digital fakery to make a voice sound better, the way so many current pop stars do. An incredible voice, meshed with sensitivity and interpretive skills to know how to act a song and build it from quiet and introspection to powerful emotion. Singing isn't just about showing off your voice and wailing up and down scales and showing how long you can hold a high note, despite what those judges on American Idol and other shows keep encouraging. The contestants there always seem like they're trying to burst a blood vessel when they sing. It isn't pleasant.

+Mark Innocenzi I just watched it again and for me it always comes down to a couple of things. First, after she motions the trombone player over, we're watching a 4+ minute unbroken take. She's got to carry this scene by herself with no help from any editing tricks. Second, I'm always impressed by the sheer physicality of that performance. Notice how she starts out anchored to the piano. And then she starts to wander among the musicians--but on the first crescendo of the song she's back at the piano. In the meantime she's incredibly expressive with how she's using her hands and arms; great sweeping gestures, etc. And then when the song winds down and she's going to end up sitting down, notice how her hands are in a prayerful position. Its just absolutely magic.
