On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA at the Ford Nationals on 5-31-19.
We're looking at a 1972 Ford Maverick Grabber in Medium Lime Green Paint. The car has a 302 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Jim Armstrong. Jim’s had this car since 2018. Jim shares he was looking for a Maverick, and found this one not completely assembled. Helps to have the skills when you own your own Auto Repair shop to put a car together to look like this. Well done Jim, the car looks great!

Absolutely glorious, I love that Maverick! My Grandmother bought a 1970 when I was 5 years old. It was bronze with a black and white plaid interior. I grew up in the back seat of that Maverick and I loved it to death. I have an early 1971 Pinto bright lime with a black interior, I am the second owner it sat in storage for 25 years out of the sun and weather. I am holding onto this gem.

My grandmother had a Maverick, too; she bought it brand new in the fall of 1971 (it wasn't a Grabber). Brown with a tan vinyl top and interior. It was a gorgeous little machine. She owned it for five years. She replaced it with a 1977 baby-blue Granada. It was even nicer than the Maverick. My grandmother passed away in 1999. (3/12/2021)

Texas doesn't use so much salt on the roads, so there could be a few more Mavericks still in existence here. I knew people that had them. My dad test drove a new one once, and I've ridden in a few as a kid. They were everywhere in the 70s and much of the 80s. So were Pintos.

Maverick like these generally had a 250 in line 6 or the 302 V8 and were opted with power steering, and front disc brakes as well as air conditioning. By 1972 the AM/FM Stereo radio was available.

A rare cousin the Comet. My dad had the last model year 1977 in yellow. Usually the Mercury badge meant a upscale to the ford badge in this case not. This car was a reliable car had the 302 with the anaemic smog add ons for the day. Thinking back this thing was unique never saw another one on the road like today when you get a certain car you see at least a couple a week. Just saying.

A pretty looking car. The problem with the Fords from this era was 'Crash and Burn'. The gas tanks would rupture upon impact from the rear and throw the gas into the passenger compartment. There were many lawsuits and many people were killed and injured. To this day it is recommended to weld a quarter inch steel plate behind the rear seat to prevent injury or death from gas entering the compartment. Lawsuits and deaths provided the impetus for the manufactures to move the gas tank to a different area of the car.

Unlike the mustang the Maverick did not use the gas tank as the trunk floor. The tank was mounted completely underneath the trunk floor and did not have any issues with gas tank fires. There’s also some other misconceptions in comments in this video ,some people claim they had a four barrel or four-speed Maverick. They may have but would have added them after delivery. That Is what I did with mine back in the 70s. Ford never delivered four barrel 302 V8s or four-speed manual’s in Mavericks .

1:34 My neighbor (and best friend) also had one in "yolk-yellow" or so I called it. Then I wanted to "annihilate" him when he passed it on to his Gardener who managed to destroy it bit by bit over a decade... Back in the day, the only car that managed to beat my 1964 1/2 289cc. 4 bbl. Stang, besides a Chevy Nova SS. Yup! I also destroyed my Pony... Twice!

A fan shroud would’ve been standard with a 302 however disc brakes were not available in 1972. And the two barrel 302 was the top engine option. However weighing only
2680 pounds the Maverick was quicker than you would think!
