Mr. Anderson has done a wonderful job preserving this Maverick.
Here in Canada, domestic Ford products (including the Maverick/Comet) during the 1969-1974 era, had a tendency to rust badly from road salt.
So nice to see a clean, rust-free example.

What a survivor! I live in Canada where winter road salt kills these old Fords. I haven't seen a Maverick for decades! Very cool to see this fine example! There was also the Mercury counterpart, the Comet. I believe in '72-73 pollution controls were mandated which resulted in engine power being significantly reduced. Hopefully for this car, the emission controls were liberated with the new dual flowmaster exhaust and a bit of wrenching. Get that 302 singing again (which it appears to do!) If I can make a suggestion: reattach the A/C drive belt unless the compressor is already frozen. If it’s not frozen now, removing the belt will hasten getting it stuck. You want the pulley spinning to keep it free and lubricant circulated. Also, when the A/C clutch is not engaged, it does not use any extra fuel. The compressor pulley spins free with no load. It only uses more fuel when the compressor is actually running.

The interior was the exact same tan-colored vinyl and bucket seats shown on the Maverick page in the Ford brochure seen here. She bought it used, and I'm sure she never would have paid extra for those options had she bought it new. It was a pretty good car. Haven't seen one in years. Hi, Lou! Well, Drew Barrymore wasn't yet born in 1973, and I can only guess what she would think of the Maverick, although I do know she drove a Chevette in "The Wedding Singer". Funny that Bob should say, "The closer I looked, the better I liked it." because coincidentally, Ford's slogan in 1973 was "The closer you look, the better we look." I agree, even with a six the Grabber definitely grabs your attention with those color schemes! This one looks so nice in that light blue, and seems like a real fun ride with the 302. Just saddle up and get on the horse!

I love those old Mavericks, I`ve owned two of them. A 1970 with a 6 cylinder and a 71 Grabber 302 3 speed in the floor. The 6 clyinder Maverick would burn the tires off (well...one tire) just as much as the 8 cylinder, it was just geared a lot lower.
Mavericks were hot little grandmaw economy cars of the day. The only problem I ever had with them was rust from salty roads in the winter and idler arms on the steering. Mavericks were very good cars.
Edit: I had two or three of the Pinto station wagons too (cant remember exactly, two for sure) those were very good cars as well.
Regardless of bad publicity don`t let anyone fool you, those were all good cars.
Thank you Bob for saving one of these.

My family had a 72 Maverick among the other large cars. I learned to drive pretty much in that vehicle starting at 13, and was driving my mom, who didn't drive, around places she wanted to go while I sat on a pillow to make me taller looking. That car would get a extra 40-50 miles once it was on Empty on the fuel gauge. You could put $5 in gas and drive all over the city. In this car the valuable lesson of driving to the right, so faster vehicles can get around you- which was all of them, still sticks to my driving style today. I am pretty sure it was a 4 cylinder. Great little car.

We had one though just a 200, '72 2 door.
Saw this got my brain going since its been gone since the mid '80s.
Only repairs it needed during the 5 years we had it was an accelerator cable (broke in the garage) and a master cylinder.
Gas crisis days or i might have by passed the vacuum sensor for the trans.
man, we took this from SFO Ca to Washington state for a family reunion, another couple (family) and a trunk load of luggage.
Great all the way around. These were good cars.

Believe it or not, in 1973, one of the color choices for Mustangs, Pintos and Mavericks was "bubble gum" pink! I remember it well because it was during the OPEC oil crisis and economical Pintos were selling like hotcakes; my Dad bought the last Pinto on the lot, and it was pink 😱. My brother and I were mortified and refused to be seen in it. About a month later, Dad took it to Earl Schieb and had it painted red 😃

I think transmission trouble. But it was a Grabber model with a 200 six in it. It was Grabber Green also. It got hauled off for scrap by my Uncle after my grandpa passed in 2005. I remember my grandpa taking me to McDonald's in it when I was little. Oh and watch out for those 73 bumper guards hurts when you run your leg into them.

It’s a nice car. Those were smog choked to death but that 302 will still be pretty gutsy in that light weight car! Sounds like it’s due for some exhaust work. The salesman, who later became a tract home builder and a millionaire, was flouting the Mavericks pluses. There weren’t many! But he was impressed with the fact it had galvanized motor mounts! Wow! 😄 They weren’t much to look at back in the day, somehow though the style has become a lot better looking with age, weird. The good news was that there was so much torque I could forget using 1st and just shift up and down between 2nd and 3rd. As I remember the body was rusted-out by the late 70's, the 250 was still going strong.

After a couple of years Ford beefed up the little Pony with a V8 and even a
    Brougham or Limited edition.
In 74 a friend had a Loaded Ford LTD and traded it for a matching Maverick to save gas during the "Energy Crisis".
One of the boys in our crowd used to drive his mother's baby blue 4 cylinder in 70.
With 3 teenagers in the back it would bottom out and never won a race.

    Goodday Lou,
Back in the day Australia was suppose to get the Maverick to compete against Holden Torana & Valiant Charger.
It didn't happen instead we got the Ford Capri in both 4 & V6 from Pommie Land
Just about every Capri you see today has a 302 or 351 Windsor under it.
I actually onced owned a rare
Capri GT V6 so cheap back in 1991 to buy but not now.
    Great survivor great story.
Hope you enjoy my email regarding the Holden HT Monaro.
Your number 1 Fan in Australia
