Goodbye to our big red hen.

  • What happened yesterday was a horrible tragedy. A vicious dog brutally murdered our big red hen.
We don't have a police force, Animal Control, or Dog Warden where I live! I had to call the Constable, who implied I should shoot the neighbor's dog, because, "He isn't going to stop." It's my responsibility to protect my own property, apparently. I've received hundreds of messages on a legal forum, as well, stating the same thing: shoot the dog.
These vicious, feral Huskeys (backyard-bred by our scumbag neighbor, 1/2 mi away 🤮) have terrorized our animals before. One was without a collar last winter, running in the woods for days (owners didn't care she was missing), before she showed up on our farm. She maimed one of our goat's ears (although we didn't see it), and tried to get our pigs. I warned my neighbor, then, that I better not catch his dogs unsupervised, off-leash again.
Yesterday morning, his unneutered, completely feral and vicious male Huskey jumped our 6 ft fence to try to kill every animal he saw. Owner took about 20 minutes to come retrieve him. When he arrived, I was fending his vicious animal off of the goats, whom he'd bloodied up.
He gave a drunken, fake apology, but still refuses to leash or fence his dogs. The Constable gave him a written warning and $0 fine! Nothing! Only after multiple strikes can he garner fines, and his dog will never be taken away or euthanized! Because our animals are technically "livestock," this horrible neighbor isn't held liable for anything but "property damage," which we would have to sue for.
If we have to defend our animals from this vicious, feral animal, we will. This scumbag is lucky we're compassionate people, because any other farmers would've shot his dog dead. Unfortunately, that's what everyone says to do, since there's no other way to protect our animals.
We do not have the $15,000+ needed, to make the large animal run 8ft tall and dog-proof. Unfortunately this means our remaining chickens will have to live in a much smaller enclosure, until we can figure out how to deal with this situation.
If you've read this far, please hug your chickens, dogs, cats, the animals you share a bond with, and please NEVER support backyard breeders, since you will be supporting people just like these scumbags, who inbreed vicious Huskeys. Please adopt, don't shop.

my sincere condolences. That's so terrible and sad.. rip beautiful dear angel sou💗l❤🐔💖💞. I wish you all a lot of strength and love. It's all this breeder's fault... a dog that was raised in love and security would never do something like that. The dog is disturbed and is definitely traumatized because he was definitely treated badly by this guy...the guy traumatized his animals and this trauma was passed on to innocent animals in a bloodlust...as if animals didn't already suffer enough because of people, dogs, huskeys etc. are still bred, for which other animals die. and then to "educate" them in such a bloodthirsty way... that's just vile. These are bad people and karma never forgets. Breeding animals should finally be banned and punished. and people like this ... should never be allowed to keep animals! I watched the video and read the video description and cried. You do everything for your animals to save them from hell and offer them a peaceful home with endless love. and then this ... comes and destroys everything... I think of you and all the animal souls and hope with all my heart that the injured animals also recover quickly 💝💞. all the best from Germany

I absolutely agree we need laws against backyard breeders! 🙌❤️ Ideally I'd like to ban all breeding until shelters are empty, but we at least need STRONG regulations! We (USA) have some of the most relaxed breeding laws in the whole world! It's truly barbaric.
Thank you so much for caring for our animals

You need to take that neighbor to court and sue them, talk to a lawyer and tell them what happened, a dog attacking anything it sees for other animals is a problem and the owner is liable for that.

Sorry for your loss. We have one acre fenced which protects our free ranging hens and guinea birds. We have dogs that get out of others yards running around, hawks, mongoose, feral cats, aggressive wild boars all who could kill our fowls.
Luckily we have only lost one fully grown hen to a supposed predator(Raven was her name), she was taking a dirt bath alone and something got her.
Only 1 in 6-7 years of taking care of our feathered friends 😊

@Kruppt808 that's great! Wow! We've lost more than 1, unfortunately. Amazingly our pigs and goats (+ predator eyes and a double-door coop) have kept all the hawks, foxes, etc, away, now our only issue is these dogs who live 1/2 mile away!

My fav chicken died weeks ago from an illness. Sometimes this kind of situations are unexpected, but despite the bad things that happened, that chickens had the best possible life, and that is what matters the most

@Icgotmoves I try to 😞 unfortunately I can't afford to turn our 6ft fence into an 8ft fence so these dogs can't jump it again... but I will deal with the dogs accordingly, if they ever come back.
