  • Learn how to start a lawn care business with 5 steps that are very important to your startup success. The topics I covered in this video are the basics of getting a business license, bank account, etc. Then, I discuss getting lawn care marketing materials such as business cards, postcards, door hangers. Then I discuss coming up with a good lawn care business plan, which includes deciding if you want to start a lawn mowing business, or landscaping business, or weed control and fertilization business.
    It would include how big your are looking to grow the business. After that, I talk about the mentality needed when starting a lawn care business in your first year. I try to maintain a survivor's mentality in my first year in business.

    I'll be binge-watching Jason's videos over the coming days to soak up all of his great advice. I've been fixing small engines for over 5 years as a side hustle to my corporate "butt in chair" IT job, and am considering a career change. I enjoy staying active and on my feet, and the older I get, the less I want to be glued to a computer screen all day.

    Jason thanks again,I am 68 years old and retired 3 years ago,and i started to mow yards just for getting out of house now i have about 20 regulator customers,i have picked up a guy to weed-eater for me and help me mow,i do about 3-4 yards a day any where from 1 to 2 day s a week.I do a lot of elderly yards and make them a good price and i have a couple of big yards,that is where i make whole lot more money.I have a cub cadet Z-Turn 46 in and a John Deere L140 48 in and a echo 225 weed eater,My weed-eater and I work on 60/40,I know that is a little high for him but he does a real good job and takes care of my equipment and he has been with me 2 years.Jason Thanks for listening

    I am retired and wanted to stay active. I bought an enclosed trailer from my parents and use my dads truck. I have a zero turn and a self propelled push mower. I have a string trimmer, edger and a hedge trimmer, all run off a single power supply. I also have a gas powered blower/vac. I got a sign for the truck and business cards and t shirts. I have a logo and in my first real year doing this I have 13 customers. I devote 2 full days a week to mow. I also bought a bagger attachment for the zero turn so I can pick up leaves in the fall. I also have a snow blower for clearing driveways and walks in the winter. Your channel has given me some good ideas on what to do, so I thank you for that. @@liamsalmon7139 2020 was great, began with a few spring cleanups, which led to over ten landscaping projects that paid my bills until late summer. I didn't plan on landscaping but that's how it played out. I bought a dump trailer & some other equipment, still only having a handful of weekly lawn service contracts. This ridiculous pandemic slowed our progress in late fall, forcing me to take a "J-O-B", which I'm still working. I didn't have enough of a client base to plow snow for winter, so I had to put everything on hold until spring. Now that spring is here the phone is ringing for more landscaping work plus a few lawn cuts. I'm actually turning down some landscape because I have to make my boss richer, making me a slave to the company. I feel lucky on one hand that I know my business grew fast, but terrible because it wasn't enough to rely on it exclusively for my income. I'm discouraged, but I have to provide for my family first, so it'll have to grow slowly. I hate every single part of working for someone else & it's killing my soul, so I pray it'll grow fast!

      what has been holding me back for quite awhile is worrying about all the legal parts. I came across a bright young kid on you tube that said why are you stressing about that when you have no work? So since seeing that video i should have a logo made by tomorrow and soon as that comes in i will order some postcards and business cards. My main question about putting postcards door to door, do i select which houses or just hit them all? What i mean is in my neighborhood where i live there are about 20 houses that do not look like they have been cut yet this season, while other houses are already getting cut. Do i focus on the yards that need a cut or hit every door?

      +Rons Lawn Care Quality Service there's always some marketing that can be done year-round such as posting on Facebook and that sort of thing. As for conversion marketing tactics such as door hangers and postcards, I would wait till the weather begins to warm up. I find that most people make those decisions very quickly so the likelihood of them holding onto a postcard for a month to call you later is not very good, though it that does happen sometimes. I would look to put out postcards in late February or early March here in the south.

    2021 will hopefully be my first year. I have a question though. If I am going to be mowing in a neibor hood do you still recommend a zero turn or just a nicer push mower?

    Hey man I have a question if you could answer for me. I have a yard the takes me about 25-30 min to cut with a self propelled Honda mower, plus weed eating and leaf blowing. The man wants it bagged and he likes his yard clean and all. I pay my guy 9$ an hour. I raised it this year from 25$ to 30$. Did I make the right choice? My customer thinks I’m going to high and will get back to me and let me know.

    • @lawncarelife
      @lawncarelife  Před 6 lety +2

      I think you did the right thing. It's important for you to determine your prices and not let the customer. $30 is still a very reasonable rate even for a very small lawn

    Hey Jason, I am really interested in starting a lawn care business. I already have some of the equipment, truck, trailer, trimmers, and backpack blower. The only thing I don't have is a lawn mower, is there a store brand you'd recommend.

      It depends on your budget. I like Scag, Gravely, Exmark and Hustler. They all make different levels of mowers

    Is there a insurance company you would recommend for lawn care? I only do residential but ever company i talked to keeps trying to get me to buy the commercial policy.

    • @lawncarelife
      @lawncarelife  Před 6 lety +1

      I think in general it is called a commercial liability policy. I think it covers you for Residential Properties also. I'm not sure if there is a policy just for residential

      joshua Murphy . You have to check your local library. That's a great resource. Also, loxal college or tech schools. Park and recreation for your town or city can be a resource.

    What about business emails? I’m 13 and started a small mowing business last year. I want to get a few more customers but I want them to know that I’m in it for real. I want to get a website, business email(or just do a free gmail with my company name) and a logo by the end of this year. Thanks for the helpful vids👍

    Got a question for Jason Creel, I live in Ellis Co Texas. Do I need a licence to specifically apply weed and feed and 2,4d to my customers lawns. Of course I've researched extensively on Google and on Texas dept of agriculture website, all I get is over complicated, impossible to understand answers. Or from the Lawnsite thread, every answer is exactly opposite of the one before! Just need a yes or no. I have 2 million $ general liability insurance, and I'm asking specifically about the 2 treatments mentioned above. Thanks in advance, MadMike and Son Lawn Care.

    • @lawncarelife
      @lawncarelife  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, you need a license unless Texas is different than other states. You can call the State Department of Agriculture

      I am doing weed control and fertilization which takes many more customers than mowing lawns

    • @JoeDoe2
      @JoeDoe2 Před 6 lety

      Do you mean the frequency and/or cost per treatment is less, so you need more customers to earn the same amount of money? I assumed you were weed treating the customers you mow. There are people who will hire you to treat their weeds yet they insist on using someone else to mow their lawns?

    50 customers is pretty good, so let's say it takes 45 min to mow a yard and most beginning companies charge 45 an HR to that comes to 35.5 hrs total.
    35.5 hrs x 45usd is $1320/week and this can change through out the week, but at this point it would be a full time job. And $1320 is before fuel, maintenance, oil, and paying ur employee if u have one. But yeah. Me and a friend is starting our own and this video helped!
