Ironwood was built on one of the largest deposits of iron ore in the world. Within a few short years this small prospecting village grew to be the largest city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Immigrants flocked to this new land to seek work and their fortune.
For over 80 years the ground yielded valuable red hematite ore. Generations of miners worked and died in the deepest most dangerous iron mines in the world.
In 1966 the era of the great iron mines of the Gogebic Range would come to an end.
Visit the Great Gogebic Iron Range as it once was and relive the fascinating beginnings of a Town called Ironwood.
