My goodness avis learning what's next is he gonna cook something actually good
Edit 1 also when you pair up with someone and active the special you and your pair up ally will both activate your special for the price of the one character special bar that activated it that and it helps build supports
Edit 2 don't be afraid to use combat arts you will always be at max weapon durability at the start of each battle and can be useful for starting combos or breaking the enemy guard because in hard difficulty the enemy is more likely to block and some combat arta can break their guard and can create an opening for a combo
Edit 3 upgrades to your facilities are very important though my recommendation upgrade the weapon forge as fast as possible you can get the most out of forging and upgrades to your weapons and heros relic's
Edit 4 you can get exp in auxillary battles it's how I got all my classes and levels to max very helpful for levels and grinding

I'm glad that my 'cheat sheets' for characters are helpful, especially so in this case because you'll have all the Deer in one comment. Unfortunately, now we're going to start having them spread out over a bunch of videos, which I'm sure will be less helpful. I can just make all of these later ones replies to that first big comment, if that would be more helpful.
I don't know what your goal will be with getting S ranks whenever relics and such are the rewards- Jessica seems in favour of you going for them, but we've also never really been completionists, so don't sweat not getting them if you don't want to. I'm sure you've noticed, but when you pause in battle you can see your progress towards your S ranks in every mission, so do keep an eye on those goals you have to reach if you want to go for S ranks in the main missions.
As our first recruit, Linhardt is a tad underwhelming. He floats around in that Raph tier of definitely not being bad, but also not being especially good, in relation to the rest of the cast. One of his personal skills is basically useless, especially when aiming for S ranks, since it just boosts the amount of HP he recovers when he's staying inside of keeps that you own. In battle, he is functionally a worse Marianne, he also spawns in a set of orbs to deal elemental damage, but Lin has wind, and these orbs exclusively shoot in front of him. It's both a worse elemental type, and a far more restrictive trajectory. Helping him is the fact that the special skill he gets is Gather, from Trickster, which does at least drag enemies in front of him when he starts attacking, but by the time you actually get Lin to master a Master Class, I think he's already run his course as a mediocre unit compared to Marianne, who herself is only pretty good. He is an extra healer though, so he does have that going for him, and the only one you have for a little while when you play as the Eagles, so he does get some points there.

I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary to make someone their canon class. Especially if you get a good weapon. I got a Rapier with a skill that made it use Magic to calculate attack. Made Lysithea a Trickster and gave her that. She gained effective damage against so much. Easily my best unit, though I'm sure a part of that was also due to favoritism
Facilities will have an exclamation mark next to them if they have an upgrade you have the materials for. Much like the character classes. It can get annoying with the classes though before you get to the point you can just toss seals around wily nily since they're always have them there
When having 2 groups fighting together I typically like to have 1 defend the other that way I can change orders for 1 of them when needed
Yeah, expeditions are basically tea parties. Gameplay wise I found them fairly useless since they only raise support with Shez and use an activity point better spent on making meals. If grinding specifically for supports for Shez, gifts work better. Really only there if you want a date with your waifu/husbando. They do have achievements for doing certain number of them though

Rewards in this game scale in proportion to the levels of your units. Defeating higher leveled enemies with lower leveled units will give you better weapons and more experience points. So while the rewards for completing missions and getting S-Ranks are unchanged between difficulties, Hard Mode enemies give more EXP and better RNG loot drops.
Also, due to the nature of this game, a unit's stats don’t matter as much as how you use them. With enough practice and patience, you can take down enemies that are 50 levels higher than you. So don’t worry too much about being under-leveled. You’ll get better as you play more.

The Fates family tree is a circle-Trust me. I mapped it out and I shudder. (And you didn't even s rank the sibling or cousin characters, and it still got messy).
That being said Greg is Canon in my heart and Holst and Hilda are his many times great grandchildren and I will die on this hill-

    Hey, he's learning!
It doesn't feel like Chapter 4? Let's Kingdom Hearts it: welcome to Chapter 3.9, lol!
"A smidge" underleveled? The enemies are literally twice your level!
Remember that most Sacred Relics and Hero's Relics are S Rank rewards. I'd say it's better to get the S Rank on your first try, unless you want to be like me- playing the valley of torment map on Azure Gleam probably ten times because I couldn't defeat 1500 enemies fast enough and I needed Felix to have his sword (the S Rank reward). There are also achievements for getting each Relic.
And Avi did not switch Ayla and Claude's positions so they were near the enemies they had the advantage over.
"I don't know why you came here". Maybe Ayla was trying to fight the enemies she had an advantage over.
If you want Lysithea to be able to use Heal, you need to assign it to her. You can change Combat Arts/Magic and Abilities by selecting a character under Convoy in the menu.
In order to access Advanced and Master classes, you need to unlock the Facility Effect.
Press X to look at Support Info before you have a character do an activity with someone. Every single character in the game has a "C Support" with everyone for gameplay reasons. Characters without Support scenes will still be listed as working towards a "C Support", like Raphael and Shamir.
As I said, Support ranks that have scenes are ones with three dots above the letter. Claude and Hilda won't have a scene until B Rank while Claude and Lorenz have their first scene at C Rank.
The "Phlegathon" commander you fought wore the banner of Band of Thieves. It was some random bandit trying to stir up trouble by pretending to be one of Acheron's soldiers. The little description for the side mission mentioned that.
Since you had the Call Guards Strategy, making your units Guard the retreating allies was a bit redundant. It might be wise to let things play out for a bit instead of immediately reacting.
"It doesn't sound like we can recruit Caspar." Correct; he's exclusive to Scarlet Blaze.
In this game, we get to truly witness the "Master Tactician"- for better and worse.
Now, it is Chapter 5. Chapter 4.3 or something in Avi's mind lol.
    Unfortunately, Judith STILL isn't playable.
I believe you do gain exp from Auxiliary Battles. They're basically a way to replay maps so you can try for S Rank or see different battle dialogue. Note that you won't be able to skip any dialogue during them. There are also three secret characters unlockable in NG+ who can only be used in auxiliary battles.
Definitely Repair Weapons. You didn't read it, but repaired weapons are often more powerful than the weapons you gain from battle.
If I remember correctly, Battalions in this game just give more advantages to a character in battle. If you give a Battalion with Resist Axes to a Lance unit, that unit will no longer be weak to Axes. If you give that same Battalion to a Sword unit, that unit will be double effective against Axes. I remember some powerful, unique Battalions being S Rank rewards.
Anna and her Secret Shop will occasionally become available for a chapter by clearing out a part of the war map. She sells pricey rare items and is luckily not playable (if you remember how bad she was in Three Houses).
The locked survey spot means you need to complete all side missions in a chapter before you can access it.
When completing Side Missions off camera, remember that clearing the way to the main objective will sometimes cause story progression, resulting in a cutscene.
Just in case: for the main story battle, you'll only be able to bring 3 playable units with a fourth joining partway through the battle. They, Hilda, and Lysithea all have battle dialogue against the recruitable unit while Lorenz and probably Linhardt have battle dialogue against the enemy general.
