2020 Subaru BRZ Performance Pack Review - Can it Compete with the Mazda ND Miata and Honda S2000?

- The 2020 Subaru BRZ Performance Pack still costs around $30k new, and you still only get about 200hp and an arguably outdated design. Let's find out whether it's still worth the MSRP and whether it's as enjoyable a driving experience as the similarly priced rear wheel drive Japanese roadsters, the current Mazda MX-5 ND and the old but tried and true Honda S2000.

The toyobaru is the contemporary e30. It’s more about the driving experience than pure speed.
That's a great way to put it. Pure and lightweight RWD thrills.
@@Zygrene - Been thinking of getting one too. Like you said it’s the more practical choice than the Miata. However if the Miata comes out with a “clown shoe” at the RF price then it might be a different story.
I absolutely loved my BRZ. Traded it for a manual 2018 Golf R. Can’t wait for the new BRZ/86. Almost guaranteed I’ll buy one.
Profile picture checks out
I had my 15 FRS for two years and did not touch a thing in suspension nor the engine maybe expect for a K&N airbox that was it and still enjoyed the heck out of the car. I just cringe when kids slam the shit out of these cars and are destroying them like the S-Chassis 240sx.
There's reason clean S chassis is $10k now because kids ruining them aka drifters🖕 same fate goes to 350z/FRS
@@FATmenDRIVEtrucks yeah it’s fast happening been thinking of getting another FRS just to add to my IS300.
@@iheartgs400 nice I got one before covid $6k not the best shape but can't complain. Also corvettes C5/C6 on the chopping block for drifters I need get one those asap before ruined
@@FATmenDRIVEtrucks C5/C6 is heavily youtube tax factor into it now C4 90+ is where the true bargain is at now. .
Yea but then you’re stuck driving a C4, which is shit. The C5 is way more modern chassis and suspension, and still where to put your $ if you want an inexpensive track toy.
Nice review! I have a 2020 BRZ PP that is 100% identical to the car featured here so I had to check this out. It is a fantastic daily driver that gives new-car features with a ‘90’s car personality, if you can handle having 2 doors and a slightly stiff ride. I just installed a UEL header and tune to eliminate the torque-dip and it feels and sounds really great now.
I have a 2018 50th Ann. BRZ, may I ask how much you paid for yours?
@@saulespino2510 Just a hair under $32k new. Mine had various dealer accessories on it that raised the price a little, but no markup. Those 50th Anniversary ones are neat too.
Surely by now, there should be good intakes and aftermarket exhausts that improve the sound from the engine and the noise in general?
If an engine sounds like shit, no intake or exhaust will fix it.
Intakes are worthless on this car as the engineers have spends a long time in r&d developing a factory cold air intake that can wring out as much power as possible. If you want to improve the sound and essentially delete the torque dip then some unequal length headers will give you the subie rumble and a relatively cheap flash tune will get you a much flatter torque curve with 200 wheel horsepower. It really wakes the car up.
I really don't get why people complain about the engine sound, the 205hp engine sounds very good especially 5-7k rpms, nice mechanical and induction noises, really responsive, yes it's no f20c and extra 30hp would make it perfect, still a great daily driver.
Don't forget the final drive ratio! Helps with low end grunt
Nice review, I love this car.
As a former BRZ owner, totally agreed on the awful sound. Started looking at exhausts and intakes soon after I got mine (also a big reason I bought an AP1 after). The revised version has better gearing/drive ratio (4.3 vs the original 4.1) was the first thing I noticed driving the revised one, and the regular suspension was far better tuned (less crashy on broken pavement, better damped and controlled). Practical enough for daily driver/only-car duty, but definitely go 2017+ if you buy one.
Would be cool to hear your thoughts on the 2.4 litre BRZ/GR86 when they become available for test-drives
You should make some more content with your NSX, even if it's just an update vid. I would love to see it, at least.
Loved the 86 twins when I drove them. Handling balance was similar to a 968 I rented, oddly enough. Kind of makes sense since they have similar weight distribution.
The NSX is currently getting some maintenance and light upgrades done. Planning to shoot an ownership update video once I get it back!
You can feel the difference 1st to 2nd gen its not the same even though it has the torque dip
2017 with pp is what I was missing in my 2015 limited, all those little improvements made the whole car noticeably better, test drove one back to back and traded in my 2015 no regrets.
He left out that this car w/ the performance package also has Brembo brakes in the rear not just the front, The new Supra has just the front Brembos and stock rear brakes, Subaru didn't cheap out.
The “performance pack” is called the “TRD Handling Package,” so that’s why it’s just brakes/suspension.
I almost bought a brz before my s2k. But the brz didnt really excite me.. mostly due to the engine. Chassis is good though
Great review!!!
Bunch of gravel in a bucket being stirred by a shovel, that does not make any sense lol. I am thinking about getting a sport car so I can have fun while going to the trails for riding my bike. Really leaning towards the GR over a 86 or a s2k. Waiting to see some reviews now.
Careful for that dork dip bro.
The BRZ clutch is too light and you can't feel the engagement point at all. Hopefully the GR 86 fixes that.
Removing the helper spring in the pedal fixes this. Pedal gets stiffer and smoother feeling. The stiffness after removing the spring is the same as pretty much any other sports car with no helper spring. It takes about 10 minutes to remove and is reversible if needed. There is also an aftermarket spring made by MTEC that is well-liked, but I’m happy with my no-spring setup. Been driving mine this way for 3 months and I still love it.
Like HoonsGruber said, the clutch spring removal helps, I have the MTEC spring and love it. I also lowered the clutch engagement point. Worth it!
The 86 should not be compared to an s2k… those cars can’t even drift properly due to issues from factory.
Have you driven a Veloster N? Would you take the BRZ over it?
As former st owner need drive one of these
Veloster N is front wheel drive. 86/brz is rear wheel drive. Different experience.
I did a video on Veloster N Performance vs Civic Type R. Fun car but I'd take RWD 9 times out of 10.
@@Zygrene agree would you ever purchase a new car let's say BRZ or Z? If liked them enough or would you wait for second hand
@@FATmenDRIVEtrucks probably wait for used prices to fall. As much as I love these affordable sportscars, there are too many used cars I'd rather buy for the money. That said I do have my eye on the new GR86..
neat
