2020 Subaru BRZ Performance Pack Review - Can it Compete with the Mazda ND Miata and Honda S2000?

  • The 2020 Subaru BRZ Performance Pack still costs around $30k new, and you still only get about 200hp and an arguably outdated design. Let's find out whether it's still worth the MSRP and whether it's as enjoyable a driving experience as the similarly priced rear wheel drive Japanese roadsters, the current Mazda MX-5 ND and the old but tried and true Honda S2000.

      @@Zygrene - Been thinking of getting one too. Like you said it’s the more practical choice than the Miata. However if the Miata comes out with a “clown shoe” at the RF price then it might be a different story.

    I had my 15 FRS for two years and did not touch a thing in suspension nor the engine maybe expect for a K&N airbox that was it and still enjoyed the heck out of the car. I just cringe when kids slam the shit out of these cars and are destroying them like the S-Chassis 240sx.

    Nice review! I have a 2020 BRZ PP that is 100% identical to the car featured here so I had to check this out. It is a fantastic daily driver that gives new-car features with a ‘90’s car personality, if you can handle having 2 doors and a slightly stiff ride. I just installed a UEL header and tune to eliminate the torque-dip and it feels and sounds really great now.

    Surely by now, there should be good intakes and aftermarket exhausts that improve the sound from the engine and the noise in general?

    • @TforTouge
      @TforTouge Před 3 lety +1

      If an engine sounds like shit, no intake or exhaust will fix it.

    • @michaelwakim2198
      @michaelwakim2198 Před 3 lety +7

      Intakes are worthless on this car as the engineers have spends a long time in r&d developing a factory cold air intake that can wring out as much power as possible. If you want to improve the sound and essentially delete the torque dip then some unequal length headers will give you the subie rumble and a relatively cheap flash tune will get you a much flatter torque curve with 200 wheel horsepower. It really wakes the car up.

    I really don't get why people complain about the engine sound, the 205hp engine sounds very good especially 5-7k rpms, nice mechanical and induction noises, really responsive, yes it's no f20c and extra 30hp would make it perfect, still a great daily driver.

    As a former BRZ owner, totally agreed on the awful sound. Started looking at exhausts and intakes soon after I got mine (also a big reason I bought an AP1 after). The revised version has better gearing/drive ratio (4.3 vs the original 4.1) was the first thing I noticed driving the revised one, and the regular suspension was far better tuned (less crashy on broken pavement, better damped and controlled). Practical enough for daily driver/only-car duty, but definitely go 2017+ if you buy one.

    You should make some more content with your NSX, even if it's just an update vid. I would love to see it, at least.
    Loved the 86 twins when I drove them. Handling balance was similar to a 968 I rented, oddly enough. Kind of makes sense since they have similar weight distribution.

    The BRZ clutch is too light and you can't feel the engagement point at all. Hopefully the GR 86 fixes that.

      Removing the helper spring in the pedal fixes this. Pedal gets stiffer and smoother feeling. The stiffness after removing the spring is the same as pretty much any other sports car with no helper spring. It takes about 10 minutes to remove and is reversible if needed. There is also an aftermarket spring made by MTEC that is well-liked, but I’m happy with my no-spring setup. Been driving mine this way for 3 months and I still love it.
