  • This time, I would like to introduce the Kurumaishi that was once laid on the Keishin Highway connecting Kyoto and Otsu on the Tokaido.
During the Edo period, the Keishin Highway, which connected Kyoto and Otsu, had a stone-paved driveway called Kurumaishi, which was used exclusively for ox carts, for about 12km. Until modern times, paved roads did not develop in Japan, and non-human-powered carts such as horse-drawn carriages did not become popular. In the Edo period, there was an interesting story that a road was built exclusively for ox carts in Kyoto and ox carts came and went.
This time, I would like to walk along the old Tokaido road from Yamashina in Kyoto to Otsu in Shiga.
    I traveled in mid-March 2022.
