    So yes, I have weighed heavier bikes on my scales. I’ve even weighed heavier two stroke dirt bikes. But that is beside the point. The point here is that this 2023 Yamaha YZ 450 FX is literally 6 pounds heavier than its Honda counterpart. 6 pounds! I wonder where, in the world all of that weight is. In this day and age of trying to get the most power with the least amount of weight, I think 6 pounds is pretty remarkable. I’ve said it before, though, weight on the scale, does not always translate to wait on the trail. there is a lot more to this than just meets the eye still though,

    450fx holds 2.15 gallons while the rx holds 1.69 gallons. 1 gallon is apx 6 lbs. .5 gallons more in fx means 3 more lbs.
    So really it is 3lbs heavier which I wouldn't be surprised if that's tied up in radiator coolant, wifi type add ons, 6th gear, or the oem silencer.

    Kyle, the review a lot of us would love to see is a comparison / shootout between a 390 Beta and Husky / KTM (TE 350 or XCW 350). Heck throw in the 300 Sherco 4stroke. These are popular bikes and no one to my knowledge has pitted these mid sized 4-strokes against each other 👍. The magazines are too afraid to do it.

    I race a 2019 YZ450FX so I can at least speak with a BIT of knowledge on it. It's little stuff that adds up. The WiFi module and the wiring/switch that comes along with it. The motor is a dual overhead cam setup vs the Honda has a single cam so all the extra valvetrain components that come with it. Obvious there's other stuff, but those jump out at me right away.

      From what I’ve read about the 2023 yz450f, I’m not sure they’d do much to them to call them an FX. The new ratios and higher rev limiter pretty much make it the perfect platform for enduro/mx/trails and bassically anything you want to do with it.
      The only changes they’ll make would most likely be bigger fuel tank, bash plate, hand guards, and possibly an 18” rear wheel instead of the 19” they run on the MX bikes.

    Dual cam vs single cam. Wider piston/smaller crank versus the Honda (basically an over-square setup to be able to keep the valve lift/spring tension to a minimum while keeping valve flow area - all have implications for the total mass of the head). Longer silencer (at least it used to be), and probably longer total exhaust length. Electronics modules for the Bluetooth stuff. Probably taller radiator height. Also if they boosted their electrical output from the 22 that flywheel rotor is probably a brick too. A carryover from the first gen FX is also a huge brick of a starter clutch. Got lighter in gen 2 but still not "light". The WR trans gearset I don't think has changed for decades and is probably still heavy too.
    Heavier bike, but it won't rattle your eyeballs out of your skull like the Honda. Racking up hundreds of hours thrashing my 16 FX around and it's not going anywhere, despite its quirks.

    • @evanwilliams6352

    • @gordonhill28
      @gordonhill28 Před rokem +1

      @@evanwilliams6352 The FX has had the WR transmission from its introduction in 2016, so I'm assuming the 2023 is the same, but I haven't seen a deep dive on this model year yet to confirm. As I recall, those gear ratios and part numbers were heritage part numbers from very early WR426/WR450 parts sheets. It would be nice if this bike got a thorough top to bottom refresh, but I doubt they sell enough of them to warrant that.

    Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450F is 242 lbs. Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450FX us 256 lbs. It is known that one of the big differences between "X" models and the motocross models is the addition of a coil to put lights on it. Gas tank YZ450f = 1.6 gal vs YZ450fx = 2.2 gal. 18 inch tire on the fx, that will add a little more weight over the f model. I suspect this is going to be just a bunch of nit-noid stuff that made the difference.

    Here's a fun little review idea... Since you will probably have to get a spark arrestor, get the LEXX end cap and get the Lexx Trail saver tip. Put the two together (takes a little drilling and grinding) and you have the quietest exhaust AND the power shifts down on the curve. Take the power tuner and -2 everything on the FI map to get back to close to baseline. For trail riding it is a transformative mod. So quiet and much more low end. Its a good way to showcase how revolutionary the FI tuner is for mods. Also don't be afraid of making your own map on the FI tuner. It can really change the character of the bike and you can put it right back to where it was with your phone. I love my '19 fx!

    Hey man great video, I am proud owner of a 2019 yz450fx. The bikes are amazing right out of the box. I race the District 37 Desert racing in the vet 30+ hwt expert class. So we do a great mix of national hare and hounds, sprint enduros, desert scrambles, dual euro scrambles and grand prix’s. This bike does absolutely amazing in all of them, it very comfortable and easy to ride, tons of power but very controllable. The suspension is smooth and will soak up pretty much everything. My bike is pretty much stock as well, didn’t really need to change much. I’m a lighter rider for a 450 at 170lbs, 180ish with all my gear on. So the front fork was a little stiff for my liking especially for my longer races. So I lowered my fork oil to a 2.5 wt fork oil and now it’s smooth and feels like a couch through the desert. I also dropped to a 48 tooth rear sprocket and what a difference, first gear stock was a bit of a handful in my rock sections. After the 48 rear and that smoothed it right out. I then added added a Scott’s steering stabilizer, uni air filter, guards and that’s it. The maps I run are the mx feeling tune on map 1 and the mild tube on map 2. These fx’s are amazing bikes.

    • @Miasdaddy7
      @Miasdaddy7 Před rokem

      And there a little heavier due to the wide ratio gearbox in the trans for the fx. The Rx is more like a motocross bike with an 18in rear wheel. The gearbox is a close ratio, I'm sure there are others that added to the weight.

    People like to complain about the weight of the YZ450FX, I have one (a 2016, the OG 450FX) and everyone says it feels heavy on the stand but when people ride it they all say that it feels very light and they don't notice the weight. Why the Honda is less I have no idea but I'd guess the battery and chain are probably 2 of the differences between the bikes where the Yamaha will pick up weight. The YZ also lists a 0.1 gallon larger tank than the Honda which would be a little under a pound in fuel.
    And the reason a lot of Yamaha snowbikes seem loud is because guys like to run the intakes with the filter on the OUTSIDE of the filter cover, if you buy or build a good pod filter that fits under the stock filter cover it's barely noticeable. Yes it sounds different than something with the filter under the seat but it's not loud by any means.

    I am guessing it's 6 lbs heavier than the honda do to the exhaust muffler, the frame maybe thicker, and Yamaha has two camshafts in the motor instead of single cam in the honda.

    Stew Baylor dominated GNCC on this thing last year. I believe he just signed with KTM this year though.

    The Honda is a SOHC (Unicam) engine, so majority of the weight might come from the Yamaha's extra cam and larger head.

    No need for a 450 on the trails unless you're desert racing.

      Sometimes it's nice to ride a little lazier. I much prefer to ride a 450 when I know I'm going with slower friends.

    While I can say What it’s heavier than the Honda, the new gen motocross version of the Yamaha has lost some weight, so I bet when yamaha updates the Fx version it’ll also lose some weight.

    Kyle This is a review that matters... Please give us more detailed info on handling, power profile, and how it compares. Hopefully it will have some more definitive info than the "un-review" of the Hondas. There was almost no useful info in your review of the Hondas, particularly the crf250rx. Still a fan Kyle, keep it up.

    I have the 2022 and I love it, Iam faster over all for hard enduro courses that have fast flowy sections power tuner app is awesome just gear it down to suit your purpose I came off of a 2017 xcw300 with sx 300 head and cdi. great for tight n tech but not so much for faster trails, the 450 fx is about as tight n technical as you are gonna get in a 450. I had an 08 husaberg fe 550 which was stinking amazing and hard to beat with anything.
