LYRICS (FR)
[Couplet 1]
Hey !
[Refrain]
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
Où t'es
Où t'es...
[Pont]
Hey
Où est ton papa ?
Dis-moi où est ton papa ?
Sans même devoir lui parler
Il sait ce qui ne va pas
Ah sacré papa
Dis-moi où es-tu caché ?

Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?

Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, papaoutai ?
Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
Où t'es
Où t'es... - Hudba
For all English speakers:
The song talks about the singer's childhood without his father who got killed during the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.
Thus, his mother hid his death throughout the childhood of stromae until he was 12 years old
But beyond this tragic aspect, the song also speaks about the pain for a child to live without his father
Stromae. His father was killed in the Rwandan genocide to be exact.
Exactly

The reason Joost Klein mentioned this song in his Eurovision song Europapa is because of his passed away dad (& mom) which his what this song is about. Europapa is exactly about how he made his parents proud by making his dream of performing at Eurovision Song Festival come true, even though they're passed away and he misses them very much.

The father is not dead, and he did not really ran away. He is physically present, but not as a father. He is not here for his son and Stromae is talking about the sadness of the kid.
He's sad to see the relation of other families around him, and don't understand why he can't have that kind of relation with his dad. He is also scared to become useless as a father too, because of this rude relation with his father. And that's why he's turning as the same puppet at the very end.
thank you very much for these explanations, I subscribe I am French
very goed

Also at the end you see the kid turn into a figure like the dad, showing that his father not being "around" impacts the kid as he becomes just like his "missing" father

here is not the case of bad parenting, he's telling his story when his father died in the Rwanda genocide, and when he asked his mom where's his father was (Papaoutai) she would tell him that he was at work, that he works a lot that's why he's not around, but he'll come soon, she couldn't bring herself to tell him the truth at a young age, and he spent his childhood wondering where his father was and when he'll be coming back

@@edmondvalmont1546 the genocide happened in 93 when he was 7-8. Stromae, growing up in Belgium, learned it in 97, but he confessed , in 2019, that his father figure was already dead to him before he was killed, since he almost never was here with him and had a lot of step siblings in Ruanda.
