- The plaintiff rented an apartment from the defendant. She alleges the defendant went into her home when she wasn’t there and stole her belongings, so the plaintiff suing. The defendant claims the plaintiff caused a fire, and when she was put up in a hotel, her belongings were stolen by someone else. The defendant believes the plaintiff is suing him as retaliation because he’s evicting her.

Sometimes I wish the judge would shut up long enough to let someone finish a sentence
Me too.
Right! She's starting to irritate me with that too and all of that hollering she does!
@@cammac2753 yup! She loves to hear herself talk !
She knows a liar when she hears one! They are dancing around the question and the judge doesn't have time for their bs!
Exactly!
I don't understand why she would be expected to pay rent if the landlord was dragging his feet in making the apartment habitable.
She kept her stuff there. I think that’s the point the judge was making. She’s clearly not homeless. The things she’s suing for she could have gotten already.
Section 8 looks for certain things on their inspections that aren’t always things that make the apartment “habitable”. It has to pass their inspection before they will pay money. Things like a window lock needs to be functional for example. A broken window lock is not something that prevents an apartment from being habitable.
It’s called free loading . She wouldn’t have paid if she was staying in a five-star hotel.! That type of thinking baffles me because the taxpayers are picking up the tab for these people. Don’t know about you, but I’m tired of paying for other people.!
Because landlord puts tenant up in hotel
@@jimgiles5741 he didn't put her up in the hotel, the Red Cross did. Because she has a roof over her head doesn't mean he's off the hook and can drag his feet as far as making the apartment livable.
Rather than screaming at the litigants, maybe you should let them actually answer the questions!
Don’t watch!
She can't even finish her question so they are not answering the question she is asking. Just saying whatever they want, when they want. You can tell alot of people do not know court etiquette, both on the show and in the comments.

Never throw flour on a fire. Flour is flammable. It will make things worse. Also, remember to clean out the lint trap on your dryer. It could start a fire.
You would think that lint trap was cleaned out after a couple of dryer’s worth of clothes. I know I do anyway.
@@julielarson3107 some people just don’t do it 🤷♂️
maybe the lint trap was full of flour which is what caused the fire
@@elvickRULES I know. Just makes me nuts when the lint trap isn’t cleaned out.
Some times you have to clean out the flue pipe on drier and going out of the house. I just had to fix my drier so it required to open it up. Couldn’t believe all the lint caked on to the internals of the drier. Lint trap isn’t going to catch all of it and if it is an older drier it will get through mounting points between parts that are sealed with a tape backed foam seal that will deteriorate over time and use. So it is necessary to open up older units and clean them out and reseal those points of hot air seepage. Takes minimal time and tools, vacuum, and a trip to hardware store for the tape backed foam of the correct size . Saves lives and money in the long run.
Nobody thought to disconnect the dryer or cut off the power lol 😂
I just saw a story yesterday where a fireman stole the wallet from a victim in a fatal car crash and used his card.
Smh
I saw that story, and they fired him.
Yea Dirty World 🌎 we live in
@@standupbcounted2420 That's great! Last I heard the fire chief was claiming there had been an investigation and no wrong doing had been found, but the police were saying there is. still an open investigation.
Update:
Oops no I just checked and he was suspended for a short time, but is back on the job still as of yesterday. Maybe we are looking at different cases.
Police officers take money from people all the time that they arresting. And I'm not talking about take the money and put it into evidence. They actually take it and put it in their own pocket. Of course they know that the person they arrested is going to say something to the judge but the judge always believes the police officers over the criminal no matter if they're innocent or guilty. But I don't doubt that when the fire department or even the Red Cross people are going to these different homes after a fire, some (not all) of them probably figure no one's going to live here anymore so they just take it. The same thing landlords do after they evict someone and the tenant doesn't return to pick up the rest of their stuff.
It seems like she was looking to get money to move. Smh she just came in here with no proof of anything lol
The only thing that happens is the Judge give the Defendant some much needed legal advice to get the Plaintiff out of his apartment 😂
The lady in black behind the defendant was very excited to see JM😅 she smiled majority of the time she was talking 😂
I used to work at Section 8. While there are alot of people who need it, I saw so many people who had better/more expensive shoes, clothings, cell phones... and going on inspections for training, huge TVs and newer computers than I had. Even one woman who had her entire rent paid, that bought a home, and then tried to become a Section 8 landlord and get that sweet guaranteed rent money. Whole system needs to be revamped.

You do not get food stamps through section 8, which only pays for rent and the renter pays a small amount of rent. IT is a rent reduction for people that is supposed to be on fixed income.
@Startrek1965 they are not saying she gets food stamps through section 8. They are saying since she is collecting section 8 benefits, she more than likely would be collecting food stamps also.
On section 8, not paying rent. The nerve and the audacity of entitlement.

I think people on section 8 have such a stigma associated with them that they can easily be victimized by the system as well as landlords. We don’t question why major corporation are receiving WELFARE in the form of tax deductions and bail outs but are sooooooo concerned about whether someone receiving section 8 can afford $1k worth of anything. There is a horrible stigma behind Section 8 Housing. When it’s utilized properly it can be an amazing tool to give that little extra help a family might need. Unfortunately there are different circumstances that put that stigma on people.
you also failed to mention eating t-bone, ribeye steak with food stamps while you can barely afford chuck steak.
@ImionsaeXwb77 blame your corrupt government.
This is why a lot of landlords do not want washers and dryers in their homes
not usually, it's because most are cheap. I've been in many rentals in the last 40 yrs and they all had a washer & dryer, it's just in the last 15 yrs they've been getting cheaper and m ore run down. washer & dryers cost money, if they service them regularly they won't have a fire. plus they have to update the hoses to the vent because the older hoses are fire hazards and many refuse to do that because it's costs,..MONEY.

I trust JM judgement like if she wanted to sue anyone, it was definitely her neighbor. But she should've been compensated with the illegal lockout because isn't that a crime???
Totally agree that she should have been compensated for the illegal lockout.
I think she waived it off since she hasn't paid for the months of storage. So she made it evened out.
AGREE! Too many infractions for him not to have had to pay something. He broke the law
He probably didn’t have to pay because she’s on section 8 and wasn’t paying her own rent in the first place. Idk I could be wrong.
Section 8 was paying her rent/hotel costs so she isnt entitled to anything for the lockout. But Section 8 may be able to sue the landlord if they were out money paying for the temporary accomodation, although the defendant did state that while she was out of the apartment he wasnt receiving any money.

Do NOT use flour on any kind of fire. Especially an electric fire (which is what a dryer fire with sparks is) electric fires are very dangerous and difficult to put out on your own.

Of course section 8 and red cross. She can not afford her rent and need help to stay in a motel, but could afford 1000 dollars worth of food and jewerly. Yea right. Tax payers are paying for her to live. can not stand people who take advantage of help.
I mean there is this thing called food stamps.
She’s pretty old I mean 1000 dollars worth of jewelry isn’t a lot when you think about it. I’ve seen my mom spend that on two rings in the past two years alone. The grocery bill was a stretch but she’s had a son isn’t the average grocery bill 500 for two people or something.
And what if the jewellery was passed down?

A few things that makes both the plaintiff and defendants litigants:
* JM should ask if the fire extinguisher was empty when they rented the apt?
* The plaintiff is lying. When the Red Cross finds a place for someone to live, they pay for everything.
* The defendant was being honest. He was just not a smart landlord.
* It amazes me how someone living on section 8 can buy $ 1,000 worth of grocery and thousands of dollars in jewelry (completely laughable)
The jewelry could be gifts or stuff they have had the pantry stuff maybe 2 or 3 hundred from the food stamps she. Gets but thTs alot of canned food
Lololol, section 8 and thousands of jewelry. That woman barely had food and stuff in thy apt. Glad the plaintiff got nothing! Just trying to scam people as she goes along
The narration in the beginning was ridiculous 😂
Since it seems that JM was in a bit of a foul mood on this particular day, one would gave thought that she’d have said something about the fire extinguisher EMPTY in the building, (possible contributory negligence?), as well as about the fact that the landlord admitted to having left her apartment and belongings unsecured for 24 hours. Had she wanted to view the work that he’d completed, she could have simply sought him out, and requested that he open the door.
and if the plaintiff wanted to win her case she would have brought proof instead of just her flapping gums.
The defendant is your typical section 8 corrupt pig. They are always looking for a quick money scheme. I'm glad she didn't win. She makes every section 8 recipient look really bad. Suing for $5,000 because that's equal to the grocery and the jewelry she owned...she better be careful because the government is watching and she will get caught on her free rental ride. If you are on public assistance and you own $5,000 worth of combined groceries and jewelry, then you don't need public assistance. What you do need is a job loser.

The only time my items even came close to that is honestly after-tax returns when my kids were younger, one of the first things I did with my tax refund was go to sams club and stock up on paper products, and cleaning/laundry supplies then fill the freezer and pantry with groceries, so I knew we would be good for a while. After that was make sure the kids had clothes and shoes if needed. Still not sure my pantry would have had $1000 worth in it.

The Defendant is pissed.
No women leaves behind her jewelry box with expensive jewelry in it, maybe costume jewelry.
Most Section 8 recipients are secretly millionaires...
She is trying to make money😂
Why is it that I keep seeing all of these cases with section 8 tenants that have 1000's of dollars worth of jewelry, expensive clothes, brand new I phones, video game systems, $1000 worth of food etc. being sued for? If you've got so much expendable income that you can afford all of that stuff then you probably don't need to be on section 8. Either they need to tighten up their qualifications or something shady is going on. 🤔 It makes me trust them less and less every time I see them on the show.

So he gets away with this. Wow
I think y’all in the comments & the judge missed what the defendant stated out or his own mouth. He has not made the repairs and the place is inhabitable because he doesn’t want her there. She left her items thinking she would eventually be able to move back in and was waiting on them to make repairs for 6 months & they did not. He should pay her for her items cause all though he didn’t touch them, he stated he left the door unlocked so there is no telling who all went in there and ransacked through this ladies belongings. I don’t agree with this one. Section 8 or not, she didn’t deserve this and can’t control a damn fire caused by a drier.
SHE IS A GROWN ADULT, IT WAS ALWAYS UP TO HER AND HER ALONE TO RETURN AND RETRIEVE HER COSTLY ITEMS.
Excuse me, but how can you sue for canned food, when Taxpayers paid for that food
So she left people and expensive jewelry in her home while she left 😏...She don't own expensive jewelry with that Salvation Army pants suit
i dont think people think about how it sounds, you're on section 8 and you have thousands of dollars worth of stuff
Not the Foreman. That's low. You can't do that.
Why didn't she simply make a claim with her contents insurance. And why is she suing him, when she already knows who the real culprit is. And if she is the cause of the fire he should be suing her. And how does such a small fire get left to turn into a huge fire, all she had to do was unplug the dryer and close the door to smother the fire, whereas she says she threw flour onto the fire, WHAT? that is highly inflammable, I think she must have made the fire 10 times worse...
She likely did NOT have tenant's/contents insurance.
The landlord had no business entering the apartment without the tenant's permission. He also admitted that he left the door open and unattended.
Again, JM got this wrong.
You are right. I have no sympathy for a landlord not repairing an apartment in order to get the tenant to leave.
I know why. I'm not surprised.
now she know good n damn well..
mmmhmmm yeah.
Why would you leave a jewerly box with $ 1,000.00 of jewelry in it.
The way most dryer fires start are either by a frayed cord which would spark , so electrical, or the other big one is by not cleaning out the lint filter REGULARLY!
Regardless of how it happened, I hope the tenant can eventually get back on her feet & move to a better place. I knew JM wasn’t going to award her any $ for her items without some kind of proof, but even if you have “Renters Insurance, you have to be able to prove somehow of your big ticket items that were lost”. (Otherwise, without proof, anyone can say they had anything stolen!) I would definitely keep pics of any expensive items along with pics of all receipts from those items on your phone this way you always have it in case something happens! (Tip- jewelry is very hard to get reimbursed for sometimes even with receipts & pics because so many people try to file false claims with their insurance company! Plus they never give you back what it’s actually worth even with a recent appraisal! I would keep any real jewelry that’s worth $$$ in a safety deposit box at the bank”)
I see so many landlords think they can just do whatever they want because they own the place. Unfortunately there’s laws In place you gotta follow but no landlord seems to want to follow those laws and makes it more difficult for themselves
"where's my grill chicken?"

The dryer can be prevented if it was regularly cleaned out the lint trap and clean out the air duct. Who in th world toss flour into the fire. Why would you sue someone for theft if there is a fire in the kitchen. Why would there be dryer in the kitchen
