We linked up with Igarashi between events to see how the kid is living, talk magic sticks, first sleds, lucky jerseys and to see how a surfer with skills groomed south of the Huntington Beach Pier found coveted Pipeline glory last year in Hawaii.

Just an FYI. For those that might be wondering, Weekly La La La is a Japanese language newspaper here in the Los Angeles area. It isn't really news. More like local current events, arts & entertainment, etc. A ton of ads for restaurants personal services and such. So for that newspaper, an article regarding a local Japanese-American kid doing some fun sporting stuff would be right in that newspaper's wheelhouse.

First Last when the people that sponsor give 50 get 50 60 free boards a year somebody's got to be paying for them.
please....the reason they go for that much is because little kids and bigger kids saw Kelly surfing them years ago and made it "trendy". Channel islands has factories banging those things out by the truck load. I'm sure his are all custom shaped.

A lot of those are pretty damn close to practically identical. I don’t think anyone could tell the difference between a good percentage of those. Pro or not.

What's the point of having so many boards? He can't be that precise to the point where he sees a swell report and says "Ah today I'm gonna take these two, they're 0.5L less than the ones from yesterday it'll be perfect"
I'm from Hawaii and I had 11 surfboards and I broke 6 of them this past winter . Pipe will just break yo shit and I didn't even go out on the big days cuz I'm not good enough. Another week and I will replace them. Some breaks around the world where the reefs are low and u take a bad wipe out or get caught in a closeout the boards hit the reef and break sometimes.
They’re pros, they want to perfect their surfboard, as having the best board for the conditions can be the deciding factor in coming out on top.
We also heard him say in the video that he’s trying to perfect his own board, trying out changes and features, so all the other boards may be previous iterations.
