great great singer , its difficult to translate the music because it is full of merafors about a sad moment on Brazil, the dictatorship in 70s, and the music is about this, the melody is incredibly beautifull, this is MPB (the genre)...there is a recent movie about her: 'elis'

É muito difícil pra uns estrangeiros tentarem entender o contexto envolvido,a letra logo de início, principalmente quando é metaforizada.E qndo se trata de Elis Regina eles percebem a importância através da emoção nada interpretação feita por ela.Lembro de um react de um gringo em que ele dizia que não entendia nada do que tava sendo dito, mas sabia que a cantora não tava brincando e que tava mostrando algo importante e pediu para que explicassem a letra e o contexto.A música era "Como os nossos pais".

This song was marked by a very delicate period in Brazilian history: resistance to the military dictatorship and requests for the return of political exiles who had been persecuted and tortured. The "brother of Henfil" (a famous and brilliant cartoonist) is Herbert de Souza, Betinho, a sociologist who lived in exile. The lyrics are poetic and full of metaphors and became the anthem for the political amnesty that ended up happening in 1979. Listen to the music again paying attention to this context. You will certainly be even more excited.

You have a lot of videos of her. Not sure you realize, millions of Brazilians consider her the finest singer Brazil ever had, and significant numbers of those consider her the finest singer THE WORLD ever had. That's a little over the top, but it's simply that they find her so overwhelming that they lack any way to express it except to elevate her to such level.
As for the song, it's nothing like a "nightclub" song, which would generally imply a torch song, lamenting a lost love. On the contrary, this song is political, written and sung during the military dictatorship in Brazil, and protesting that dictatorship in between the lines - and not very far between them. In fact the protest is more boldly open than many other songs from that era. It refers directly - not between the lines - to "o irmão do Henfil" - the brother of Henfil - someone who "disappeared" under the military regime, and to "Marias e Clarisses" - wives of persons who were tortured and died, and who now (that is, the wives) "choram" - cry. The title of the song, too, refers to the anguish of living under the military regime. The drunk teeters through life. The "equilibrist" is an unfortunate exact translation, etymologically of the Portuguese "equilibrista", but "equilibrist" is not really a word in English, not found, for example, in Dictionary.com. The correct translation is "tightrope walker". That conveys very well what this song means to say. One slight misstep, and you could easily fall to oblivion - be killed or simply "disappear". As for Elis smiling at the end, I think it's sort of a mockery of the dictatorship: "o show de todo artista tem que continuar" - the show of every artist has to go on. Is this not saying, between the lines, that the country has to go on - and WILL go on? In other words, it recalls the line in an American protest song, that "We shall overcome!" Too bad that Elis didn't live long enough to see the dictatorship overcome.

Elis Regina gravou essa música no final da ditadura militar, e foi batizada como o hino da anistia, em homenagem aos presos políticos ou exilados em outro país, mas uma das músicas mais difíceis de toda a sua carreira e uma das mais executadas, letra do João Bosco e Aldir Blanc.
E a denuncia do sufoco nas torturas aos artistas, estudantes, politicos, inlectuais, etc. "E nuvens la no mata borrão do céu chupavam manchas torturadas que sufoco" .. e tanta gente que "partiu" num rabo de foguete .Brasil nunca mais.

Elis é imortalizada na música brasileira. Insubstituível! Essa canção é uma " bossa nova" de protesto. Os filhos dela cantam , são excelentes músicos mas, não são um terço do ela era. Elis é imortal! Obrigada por reagir a ela!❤😢

The lirycs makes reference to a Brasilian political situation in 70' during a fascist /militar government period. Our tradicion is much strong on the mining of lirycs than the vocal performance of the singer.

the eight best singers of Brazil for me: Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Nara Leão, Elza Soares, Maria Bethânia, Cássia Eller, Elizeth Cardoso e Clara Nunes. There are others, of course (Beth Carvalho, Carmem Miranda, Ângela Maria, Nana Caymmi, Astrud Gilberto, Maysa, Liniker, etc. etc. ) but these eight I believe are the basic ones.
