Decades back my grandfather raised corn without spraying for worms. Instead he had a 200W bulb up high nearby (not a flood light; the regular shape). It would attract the moths. 5" under the light was a shallow 24" pan filled with 2" of water having enough used motor oil floating on top to cover the water completely. The moths would hit the light and bounce into the oil. He would have appreciated low power LED technology.

Danny in my garden I get good organic control of corn earworms by using eyedroppers or small squirt bottles to place a few drops of canola or olive oil in ear tips, as soon as the silks show signs of drying. You also can use a standard solution of Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) or spinosad in the same way.
I have success every time- Loved your squash musical toy- but I wish I could grow them like you do. Cheers Denise - Australia

Danny, we've grown Peaches and Cream every year for the past 22 years in our garden, and it has never tasseled before it's at least 4 feet tall. My husband is wondering if you have maybe too much nitrogen in the soil for Peaches and Cream?
Also, we always go through it when the silks start coming on with a small bucket of vegetable oil or castor oil and a turkey basting syringe without the needle on it. Every single ear gets a squirt down into the silk with roughly a teaspoon of oil. It doesn't completely alleviate the worms, but it goes long way.

Squash looks great! And very early! My squash are just now beginning to flower! My squash usually gets hit by pickleworm/melonworm by mid summer. Hope you are doing well. If you suspect or see caterpillar damage, corn earworm damage on your corn, you can always take a few drops of oil, cooking oil or mineral oil and put a few drops of oil into the developing ear to stop caterpillar 'worm' damage. Best of luck and have a great spring

Danny this year the squash has come through for you. This year is my first time growing squash. One thing you mentioned was that you trimmed it. Is that basically where you thin out the leaves only?? As far as the netting goes you wouldn't have know if it works unless you tried it. So never consider that a failure.

Thank you for sharing your garden with us. How do you keep the dreaded squash vine borers out? That's about the biggest struggle I have, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I wrap aluminum foil around the base of the plant.

I fertilize mine twice once when 8 inches tall and again when 12 Inches tall I use ammonium sulfate.

Squash bugs tear up my squash here in SC. I have tried every natural method to stay ahead of them. I would have liked to see how you trim your squash, I have never heard of that before. I trim up tomatoes, but not squash. Could you go into more detail of what you do? Do you trim off the lower sections only, thin throughout the bush, or take off the leaves? That is some pretty squash, whatever you are doing! 🌽
