    Painkiller is 1000% not a beginning riff, I think all guitar players can speak on that cause I don’t think anyone sits down and says yep that song is going to be one of the first songs I learn right as they pick up a guitar

      When I started playing guitar I wanted to jump right into playing and I didn’t learn “harder” stuff like that till 2-3 months in but I practiced everyday. It can be a lot to comprehend at the early stage so I agree.

    The most important thing for a beginner here is the techniques. Learn to chug triplets for one song and you now know how to chug triplets. Learn to alternate between chugging a palm muted open E string and playing 5ths on the A string and you are now getting very metal... songs come and go but the techniques remain the same. (and yes that's a butchered reference to Zep)

    i started with bass and moved on to guitar as soon as i found out that the bass player for van halen/van hagar didn't get chicks because of his stellar bass skills... (it was his stellar back up vocals), the very first song i learned on bass wasn't an easy one.. it was an introduction into my walking bass line phase that ultimately lead me to my ska jag. the song was "pea" off of one hot minute by R.H.C.P. so i wanted the chicks... all i did was add two chords and learned some basic structure (stereotypical power chord, down tune, one note solos...ect you get the picture.) its easier to start with 2 less strings until you get the hang of the basics.

    I'd say they're great songs for beginners to work on so as to develop a solid technique.
    I've always played by ear when it comes to riffs, but never took the time to see the songs through.
    Bass on the other hand was a different story, I could play the whole ''RATM, Evil Empire'' album all the way through when I was a kid.
    Tangent:
    Also, the very first concert I ever went to, New Years Eve 94'95 @ the Detroit Fairgrounds. They shared a ticket with Helmet.
    (Front and center when Helmet struck the first chord of 'in the meantime', I had an idea of what to expect but no clue of the intensity. I was a little guy 15 ys. old, almost suffocated in the squash pit until I got the gist. After that I was hooked.
    As my addiction progressed the concerts I attended got heavier and the pits got harder. I hit rocks bottom when a so called friend of mine pushed me into a 'Cannibal Corpse' pit full of Skinheads at a show called 'The Fat Tour' and I died... Thankfully I was beaten back to life and remain pit free to this day.💀👍

    Downfall? A bit surprised at that one, I wouldn’t have said it’s for a beginner. Helps getting the alternate picking motions down? Sure, but not a beginner riff. Oh and a slight correction, halfway through the riff, it changes to 8 on the low E and A instead of 0 7 on the A (I know this since I’ve got a good ear and I’ve seen the live footage)

    • @KevinBalke
      @KevinBalke  Před 2 lety +7

      I think it's a good exercise when you just play the basic pattern over and over, even for beginners (so I skipped the 8 in the low E to not make it more complicated). It's not an easy riff at all, but it's somewhat easy to understand and could help beginners to - well - not be beginners anymore.

    • @metalftw9652
      @metalftw9652 Před 2 lety +1

      @@KevinBalke I understand in terms of an exercise, but it’s just changing it means you’re not playing the actual riff and if anything you say it’ll make beginners… well not beginners anymore, I actually think the real version would defo be a good exercise (that is a tricky one to get down)

    Your meter/inflection r for "for whom the bell tolls" got my hackles up.
    Also, stay away from early Slayer.

    Yngwie Malmsteen suite op 5 is another great one for beginners.

      That can be bit tricky. I would start with something more simple like through the fire and flames by dragonforce

    i love how the riffs i composed are literally so similars to this kind of riffs and i was so hyped with the clue of being original ;/

      Just keep crankin my man, I've been writing for a decade and I'm almost done with music school now, still accidentally rewrite Hot Blooded every 4 months or so. It's normal and cool to stumble into riffs and styles that already are a thing, just keep writin and riffin!

      Keep Rocking!!!

      Oh that's actually quite easy, just turn your guitar around or go to a shop and grab a left-hand one, if you're a righty.
      Sure, it's not exactly the same but it helps realise how much harder it was to start out than we usually remember.

    Most of Rammstein's riffs are easy, but they still sound badass

    For whom the bell tolls was one of my first songs. My truely first song was smoke on the water played incorrectly from G & D strings

    Some nice stuff here. I worked out 80% of Slayer’s Seasons in the abyss intro the other day, so this video has a lot to offer me 🥳👍. Thanks for keeping it clear- just watched another ‘5 beginners riffs’ video, where the first one was real easy and then the guy starts rattling off music theory and not showing the finger positions on the others that steadily got more complex🤨🤔😬
