  • For all of you who lived and worked here, who grew up here or raised a family here, this video is for you. Please leave comments and share your memories.
    Drake Kasern is the home of the Bundespolizei and is not open for visiting.
    If you want to just walk by, take the U-5 and continue down Homburgerlandstrasse about 10 more minutes. The Pizza place is still in hands of the same family for over 40 years now, but the original owner passed away 2 years ago. His daughter runs it now. We had pizza there yesterday and have got to say, this is the best pizza I have eaten in Frankfurt.
    The US Army left here in 1992.

    Awesome, I definitely bought food at the burger bar from 88 - 90 !! I’ve been waiting so long for someone to do this !! Thank You so much !!!! 👍👍 above the burger bar was the library, pool tables and most importantly where we would sign up on the list days ahead so we could call home to the States .

    The building at 1:22-1:33 was the building my office was in when I worked for the IG 1978-1981. We lived in Edwards housing and could walk through a back gate of Edwards, cross the street and go through the gate at Drake. Thanks for sharing the video. Lots of memories!

    Awesome video! This brings back so many great memories! That housing area looks like Old Edwards! I lived in the Building right in front of the DYA ( now the kindergarten) in 1978-1980 I cheered for the Edwards Packers youth football team in 1979 and 1980. GiGi Goode was our coach. I also went to Atterbury Elementary school number 2 and FAJHS. I look forward to seeing your next video!

    DeAngelo's is hands down the best pizza in Frankfurt!! I had some U of M classes on Drake and lived in Edwards in mid-80s. Awesome experience and fun times! Drake was 3rd Armored Division HQ, and Edwards was where Elvis was stationed when he was in the Army. They always left a light on in his room. Thank you so much for the video.

      Elvis was stationed in Hanau but he did come over to Edwards once for only a short time passing through. That wasn't him that jumped into the sports car in front of Drake in GI blues. He met Pricilla in Hanau where her father was a colonel stationed there. Sorry I have the advantage of you because I was there at the time.

    Edwards had a chapel on the kasserene, it was inside the gate and to the right as you went in, Drake did not have one. The building with the cupola on top of it was where the American Express office was. And the one to the left of it as you are looking at it from the street was the headquarters building for the 3rd Armored Division. Lived in New Edwards Housing Area from 81 to 84 then moved to Mainz. Loved this video! I lived in Edwards housing twice from 81-84 and 86-88. Where the Kindergarten you showed was, looked like the location of the old Youth Activities Center. There were officers' quarters directly behind Edwards Kaserne at the top of the hill in Old Edwards. I walked to Frankfurt American Junior High on Drake and took the bus and train to F.A.H.S. where I graduated. in 87. There was Old Edwards housing and New Edwards housing. If I remember correctly, the Football field and tennis court was between the housing areas. I worked at the Youth Center and got my first job with Morale Support Activities Frankfurt. I worked at Edwards, Betts Roller Rink, and Camp King. All in the Youth Activities and Youth Sports. I Loved Edwards and Drake. DeAngelo's was a treasure. The best pizza. Thank you for the walk down memory lane. -Ken

    Thank u so much for ur videos 🙂 i grew up in FRANKFURT and lived in New Edwards from 70 till 77 then moved to right outside of Gibbs and had the best time living there. I left in 97 after working as a Base closure tech and closing down all the kaserns starting with Edwards and Drake and finishing up with Rodelheim and moving to Hanau for a few months.. Will always miss those places and Frankfurt will never be the same but i felt honored to be one of the last five employees to be part of that team that closed down forever all those places i went to as a Military Brat and as a Adult working for the 103rd ASG/418 BSB.. Thank you for the video. I'm a former FAJHS student 68-71. Also a former soccer player for the 3rd Armored Division soccer team in the early to mid 70's. I remember the FAJHS basketball team played some of their games at the Drake gym in the 70/71 school year. On a different note, I wonder if the SPD sign at the 5:48 minute marker and the size of the housing area you referenced are connected to each other in some way in the call for "Zeit fuer 6000 neue Aerztinnen", Maybe in part medical student housing?

    At 5:58 you are at the quarters we lived in on the right. We were on the third floor at the far end. When you go straight through to the end of the building you are you are facing where the AYA was. They have since tore it down obviously and built that new building. This country is increasingly in the grip of paranoia. In 2003 I was able to go inside Drake - and take pictures - , at a time when it was already used by the police. Nobody complained then. And some trivia from way back then: In the late 50s Elvis Presley most likely attended a change of command ceremony at Drake. And some scenes for Elvis first post-Army movie "GI Blues" were shot in front of Drake and Edwards

    • @frankfurtonfoottours2361
      @frankfurtonfoottours2361  Před 2 měsíci

      They actually filmed a lot of GI Blues while Elvis was serving, waiting until he was out to do the scenes with him in them. He came to Frankfurt to meet his double.
      I think the police keeping the public out of their training area is the same as military bases keeping the public out.
