    Was able to spot the image comparison immediately. There's this weird extra sharpening like effect with most phones when taking photos, where the very edges of objects, whether it be text or an outline of a shape etc., tends to get like "blown out" if that makes sense. It's most apparent in highlight areas or like the edges of the colored watch numbers and hands.
    This Prores phone shoot also has this weird edge effect processing going on. Color wise it looked great, but that slight softness at times, like on your face, along with the odd extra edge blurrying especially on your body shape, make it quite noticeable to me it's not very "pro camera".

    • @abelardojeda
      @abelardojeda Před 2 lety +62

      Precisely! And that’s how I don’t understand why people are so obsessed with the idea that professional cameras don’t make sense anymore because of newer phones. Let’s not forget those product shots from the iPhone fall apart for high quality print purposes.

      I was really noticing that in Marques's vid, really surprised he didn't point it out since that was such a big talking point with the Pixel 6's over sharpening. 50mp is great but the pixel binning on almost every phone makes the image unnaturally sharp. 😕

Like the skin tones were mushed a bit while maintaining some contrasty detail. Hard to describe exactly. For sure the footage looks really good and the stabilising is incredible and the way that ProRes keeps the details is amazing, but it does still look like it wasn't shot with a proper camera. And obviously it wasn't. It was actually quite easy to tell which one of the photos in the beginning was taken with a phone and which one was with a proper camera. Also the way it blurs the hair and beard is just way off. For something that's in your pocket, the iPhone is insane for sure, but for now it won't replace an actual camera.

    • @MicroFourThirdsCorner
      @MicroFourThirdsCorner Před rokem +3

      Can you define "proper camera"? Do you mean a camera that just takes photos or just takes videos? It's not so long ago that people were saying you can't shoot video on a stills camera because it's not a proper video camera.
      It's not so long ago people said mirrorless cameras weren't proper cameras because they didn't have a mirror.
      It's not so long ago that people said DSLRs weren't proper cameras because they didn't shoot film and real photographers only shoot on film.
      Back in 1935 the Leica 35mm wasn't a proper camera because it wasn't large format and you could slip it in your pocket.
      The iPhone (or Android if that's your preference) IS a proper camera that happens to also do other stuff. Being able to do other stuff doesn't mean it's not a real camera.
      The best camera is and always will be "the one you have with you".

      Same, easy to tell but I use my iPhone in ProRaw and my ILC cameras on the same locations all the time. Basically it's missing a bunch of detail, but then again it's a 12mp (quad bayer 48) vs the R5 which has 3x those pixels and a far higher grade lens. The fact that many can't tell at first glance is a win for the iPhone. And that's the thing, if 90+% can't tell, and I probably wouldn't on the typical screen I view images on, the phone or tablet/laptop then it makes the R5 that much less relevant.

    I don't know if I have a better eye than most but I was able to spot the iphone photo almost instantly. The HDR effect that it gives to images is a little too noticeable sometimes and I spotted the hands on the watch face being much too bright for the surroundings. You could bump down the contrast, highlights, or whites in post and it would've been a bit harder to discern. As far as the video goes, Apple's video doesn't come close to what you get on some of the cameras of today. I am not a fan of the digital blur and I honestly USB stream through a camera for Facetime, Zoom, and Teams meeting while in the office for a much better appearance because both the Iphone and Mac cameras are lacking.

    I think the difference is still obvious, but the quality of phone cameras is now at such a level that they are ‘good enough’ for many use cases. E.g. many CZcams channels or company videos are not about stunning visuals, but about content and stories. In those cases it’s totally viable to produce with an iPhone as long as the content is good.

    The one thing that I couldn’t overlook and the main reason I decided to upgrade from using my iPhone to using a Sony camera was because the bit rate is just non-comparable. There’s so much pixelation during scenes that have any amount of action in it. You also can’t compare the amount of control you have while using a dedicated camera. Don’t get me wrong. The iPhones have come to a point where if you needed to shoot something on the fly and don’t have a camera with you, if you don’t say anything, you can definitely get away with it without anyone noticing. One other thing is that when using cinematic mode, the post processing background blur really struggles when recording broll even when you try to redirect the focus when editing the video on the phone. It’s not a bad set up, but for my needs and attention to detail, getting a dedicated camera was a must.

  • @McKinleyGriggs
    @McKinleyGriggs Před 2 lety

    My honest guess was correct, here's why: The over-sharpening of the iPhone's image is noticeable and far too crunchy, the highlight fall-off is very noticeable, and the blacks are much better (IMO) from the camera. The text highlights, the fall-off, and the details of the screws on the camera shot are better (again IMO). Did you happen to move your light? I can see more light on the iPhone image and the iPhone reflection was caught in the watch face. That is just the photos.
    With all that being said I totally agree, I love that iPhone (apple) is pushing the bounds of things. I think it makes camera manufacturers step up their game, which benefits everyone in the industry. I love that iPhones are there for you when your camera is not available. That really speaks!

    video, the post processed blur looks weird in some edges and more when Pete is moving his hands. But still great quality for a phone!

    This video deserves an making off! I think thats the first video of a phone Pro treated like an Pro for an ecxited Pro! Thats why an close look at an making off I mean more about grading raw video and lightroom should be enjoyable. Opening with cards is a movie it self!
    So I will see it again! ❤️

    I love how Peter and Marques recommends each other on their videos. True friends right off the bat and I watch them both when it comes to these things lol.

    I wish they'd update their antiquated OS. I went to pixel and it's like stepping outside for the first time in 6 years.
