This makes me miss my dads office borrowed Kawasaki Ninja 150RR. It was one of the loudest and fastest bike my dad has owned, over 30HP in total and that bike has always been locals favorite when it comes to 2 stroke tuning and it still is today. Remembered waking up to eat my breakfast and get prepared for school and my dad just starts her up, do a 10 minute warm up, and 3rd grade me just eating my breakfast while smelling that raw power of a 2 stroke smoke. Then i got to ride it to school with my dad. Just being a passenger makes me feel like i wanna die, it was too fast and it pulled like crazy. That was the coolest i can be arriving to my school

Two stroke : "shift up when it's 1000 or 2000rpm after redline"

Comparing a 30 to 50 year old two stroke to a "modern" 4 stoke is like comparing a P-51 to an F-18. It's doesn't make any sense.
If 2-stroke engines has continued to develop alongside 4-strokers, we'd still see a disparity between the two; 2-strokers being lighter, more powerful, cheaper, and stinkier than 4's. (Personally, I like the smell)
The advantages offered today to 4-strokers include better metallurgy, much better fuel injection, instrumentation, and engineering software.
Advantages of a 2-stroke today that would hold true today including, reduced cost/complexity of heads and valves, increased lightness (due to less material, due to lowered stresses, due to power releases across 2 revolutions instead of once out of every four revolutions), increased lightness of parts and pistons contribute to higher RPM's than a 4-stroke.

Engine configuration is one thing, but valve application is another beast entirely. I owned both NSR150 from the 90s and a 2010 Ninja 150RR. All I can say is that Honda nailed it better with their RCvalve compared to Kawasaki's Super KIPS, despite both fundamentally does the same thing as a reed valve. The only problem is that NSR's RCvalve depends so much on sustained voltages, it's only a matter of time till it broke. The same voltage source for everything else on the bike. Mine break twice by now, for different reasons. Meanwhile, Super KIPS don't have such weakness. Except maybe some minor hiccup due to the mechanism got stuck by dust or debris, which can be easily rectified.

Years ago I got a chance to ride a 2 stroke road bike. A Suzuki GT 650. Smooth as butter for a 2 stroke. I owned a Honda CR 125. Way too much fun. I just sold a 2014 Polaris Switchback Assault snowmobile with a 600 twin 2 stroke. Again, way too much fun. Great power. Less moving parts. Aftermarket companies have been tuning 2 strokes with turbos for the mountain sleds for the higher altitudes. Polaris and Skidoo started factory installing turbos on some of their trail sleds. 2 strokes are unbeatable in applications where high power to low weight is the order of the day.

Great, as every time. Two-stroke engines have nearly the same compression at every power load. The resonance exhauster helps loading the cylinder more than at low speeds. However, at very low loads the mixture in the cylinder is filled with exhaust gas, causing interruptions of combustion. The spark plug ignites, but at the position there is no combustible gas. So, after one or two revolutions the exhaust gas is purged out and a new combustion takes place. There is one little engine with an astonishing low load behavior. It is the YAMAHA FS50 SS, built BEFORE the RD50. The engine used to have a rotary vane and even down to idle load you couldn´t hear any dropout. For me it was the most civilized gas two-stroke engine ever built. The reason for that . . . I don´t know. Though the engine was not much weaker than the following models it took only about half the gas consumption.

Hi! Nice bikes! There was a little mistake regarding inline 4:s though, I think: Suzuki RG500 is not inline, but square 4, with two separate crank shafts connected by gear. Like " two times inline 2:s "

It's sad they don't make 2 strokes anymore, but we gotta save the planet now. Sigh.
I'm glad I got to experience 2 strokes, mainly singles, an RD400 twin, and I got a ride on a Kawasaik triple once. :)
    Thanks for the memories!

im collecting some vintage mopeds and i must say that the two strokes are way more fun to drive. got a 60cc fizzy which is a blast, top speed might not be that high but the acceleration is pretty fun

RG500 Suzuki was a Square Four not an in line four.

  • @CaptHollister
    @CaptHollister Před 4 lety +2

The Sunbeam S7/S8 was a four stroke. The Suzuki 's RP68 20,000rpm isn't all that impressive when you remember that the contemporary Honda RC116 50cc 4-stroke twin made its power at 21500rpm. The mid 60s saw some truly memorable racing engines. Personally, I've owned mostly 4-strokes, but a very high-speed run on my buddy's RG500 remains one of the most memorable rides of my 41 years of motorcycling. I'm also old and lucky enough to have ridden a Kawasaki 500 triple; it was an unpleasant beast.

I have had my share of two stroke car and mycles . I loved my SAAB 850, I think it was a 64 , wasn't as good as a VW , in snow,, but was faster. I worked for a Yamaha dealer in it 71 and tested the rd's ,dt's etc. I also owned a YDS 3, and a JAWA ,CZ, and now I am buying a 53 Zundapp 250 , .I am 76 so this is probably my last bike.

Had a Suzuki GT750 triple back in the day. A touring bike. Engine was rebuilt with bridge-ported cutouts, triple expansion chambers, basically as close to full race engine as you could go. No power below 4000 rpm, but above that - with a pillion - it would run past the Z900s, Z1000s of the day, and then I’d grab 5th gear and disappear into the distance. I fitted a Dunstall full fairing, longer Koni shocks on the rear, and some suitably sized Trickit forks internals in the front, and also reversed the fork legs to put the calipers behind them.
Raising the rear cured the weave the stock bikes had over 180kmh.
Tried it on the drag strip once, but getting it off the line was a problem. Good speed at end of the quarter mile. Second pass I blew the clutch basket apart - and it cut a gouge into the inside of the clutch cover. Ouch. Running into the redline it would do a tad over 270kmh (calculated using revs x wheel rotation. Probably going faster, actually, allowing for growth of the type at high speed. This was all on comparatively skinny Dunlop K-81s, by the way. When I think back, I am lucky to still be here. In my 60s now, and all the people from my town used to tell my Dad I wouldn’t live to be 21. Well, I’m still here, and they’re all gone.........

Awesome vid dude, a couple here I didn't even know about. I started riding in the 80's, and working at a bike shop, I had to "sneak" ride a race prepped Yammie IT495 a couple of blocks downtown - try and "ease" into the powerband in traffic - what a hoot - point, warp, brake - point, warp, brake, all the while hanging over the front mudguard to keep the nose at least near the ground, lol. Good times.

When I was 14 or 15 years old, I started riding my father's street bike. Prior to that, most of my experience was with my early 70s Yamaha YZ80. Dad's bike was a 1973 Suzuki GT750, with a fairing and hard saddlebags. It was a large, heavy motorcycle. To this day, my father marvels that I learned how to ride a street bike on it. Fortunately, we lived out in rural eastern Oregon at the time, so there were long, open roads for me to ride on. It's the first vehicle I ever took over 100 miles per hour.
