Glenn was generally a character that was misused alot of them time. It feels like the writers didn't know how much the fans liked him, he definitely deserved more.
Nope. They knew exactly how much the fans liked him, wich is why they had Negan bash his skull in
@@RoyLevan That was actually because it happened in the comic, not because of popularity
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 and why do you think they did it in the comic?

I remember what a massive meme this episode became. After it aired, whenever an important character would die on The Walking Dead or even completely unrelated shows like Game of Thrones, there would be a barrage of "don't worry, they probably crawled under the dumpster" jokes. It really goes to show just how contrived and ridiculous it was to have Glenn survive that scenario.
I wish Robb Stark had crawled under the dumpster
@@adityanegi1604 I wish the whole show crawled under a dumpsted after S4 ended :(
I remember that time😂
Bruh I stopped watching became depressed came back just to realise I was watching walking dead.
in the show, after this point at least. if a characters death isn’t shown. they haven’t died. even if it’s implied that the character is dead. there’s glenn, rick, Beta (elevator shaft scene) and probably others but these three come to mind, it’s pretty cheap tbh..
Always hated that the fire escape was there. S1 Glenn knew well enough to use them to his advantage and I just hate seeing that one go unused.
real shit😭
I mean there was a pile of junk in the way and they were a bit panicked given the situation, and the herd was moving fast (honestly it moved TOO fast in this episode, suddenly a herd is around the corner and down the street halfway to them before they even move towards the alley, it’s like the herd is full sprinting when it’s doing a chill walk), but yeah
my exact thoughts i literally thought glenn would just jump over there because it was such a s1 glenn moment and he was just trapped on the damn trashcan… so dumb
I've watched this show through twice and both times I was yelling at the TV that he needed to have used the stairs.
@@casedistorted glenn literally faced this same situation in atlanta where there were more walkers, it seems more like the writers forgot how smart glenn really was
Dude rick running this entire episode was bad ass. Dude ran for MILES
Wait, Glenn already knew he was going to be a father in this episode. In fact, he knew it as early as 6x1. We know this because when Glenn and Maggie are discussing why she should stay back and Glenn is saying it's for the benefit of Deanna, Maggie says "that's not the only reason" and Glenn says "yeah, it's not." But we also know this because in 6x7 he tells Enid that Maggie is pregnant and he hasn't even returned at that point yet.
So yeah, he totally already knew.
yeah there’s no way she’d tell enid before glenn

@@Z0mb1eGD honestly, I can't tell if many or few main characters die, because that would ruin the immersion, but I definitely recommend you keep watching at the very least until season 9, because it's incredible.
According to the actor, Steven Yeun, he wanted his comic book death. He said this on Talking Dead, if memory serves correctly.
Don’t really blame him. It’s a good death and if he wanted to pursue other things then that’s fine. Doesn’t meant I wouldn’t have liked to see more Glenn 🥲
@@thethriftytypewriter What kills me is that the last real dialogue that Glenn had was addressed to Daryl. He said: "We gotta go back home. It's gonna go wrong out here." Haunting last words. He was right.
@@Und3rgroundMan never even thought about that. That’s pretty haunting tbh
@@thethriftytypewriter Another reason why Daryl felt so much guilt. Not just because he punched Negan, leading to Glenn's death. But also because Glenn was only out there and captured because he was looking for Daryl and trying to bring him home in the first place, like a true brother.
If you remember they also left his name off of the opening credits until the ep aired where he came out from under the dumpster. Honestly.. That whole dumpster scene was bad. Fans referred to it as jumping the shark moment.
I remember watching the interview with Steven Yeun after the ep aired where he crawled out from under the dumpster and he was sitting there with Scott Gimple talking about "Thank You" and how he had to hide out (in real life) so nothing was given away. They wanted the fans to think he was dead 🙄
He wasn't to happy with that ending dumpster scene and it was weird that Gimple was there sitting Next to him. It was through satellite and Steven honestly looked uncomfortable.
Rick shooting the Wolves through the RV's walls was both smart and epic.

I didn't realize they were Wolves until reading this!
No mention of how Glenn somehow magically flipped 180 degrees so that his head would be close to the dumpster.
In addition, when Glenn talks to Rick again he says dumbass again through the talkie-walkie. It would have been his firt and last words to Rick, wich I think would have been such a nice detail.

Next episode you should cover is “Them” from Season 5. Mainly because this episode will always stand out to me. I know the episode is not really eventful or have a lot of action, but it provides the embodiment of what a zombie apocalypse can do to someone. As we can see after having encounters with cannabis and crazy cops to losing Bob, Beth, and Tyrese, the group becomes very tired, distrustful, depressed, and paranoid. With them only looking after their flock.
"encounters with cannabis" lol Gareth and the boys just had some munchies
Best filler episode in the show. Our group was in a pure survival mode. Simply brilliant.
“We are the walking dead!” 🔥🔥
What stands out about that episode is the element of family, the group despite them going through so much like Aaron says I think they never turned on each other
underrated ep
is this your channel? or am i mistaken?
When you think about the characters with moral compasses in relation to Glenn, Glenn had very strong role models with Dale being the first to teach him, then coming Hershel, and after that he was left as the sole moral character in the group. He was made for his role and it was sad to see him break his character when he killed but not unsurprising when you reflect back in season 2 when he sided with the group on killing the prisoner.
He's a follower, him going against his morals is proof of that.

I think if he did die in this episode, they should have put the speech he gave to Enid about 'we carry on to honor those who can't' in an earlier episode, because that was the only thing I truly would have missed from his further arc. I do absolutely love the symbolism of him being underneath the dumpster and Enid finding him - Enid being severely mentally ill at the time and wondering 'what is the point anymore' and Glenn, someone who is the optimist and always sees the good in everything, surviving only because Walkers were busy consuming the body of someone else, hiding under a filthy, smelly dumpster, coming out covered in blood and probably smelling terrible, being at one of his lowest points - and he still comes out of that with enough mental optimism to give Enid a cheerful point of view about the situation at hand. I have always loved watching TWD to feel better when I am having bad mental health episodes, and watching Glenn come out of this is definitely a point that gives me hope
:)
Around 12:15 you state that glenn didn't know about Maggie's pregnancy before his fake death? He was fully aware of the baby then. He mentions it to Maggie in episode 6x1 during the meeting very subtly and also tells Enid about the baby when he finds her.
I would LOVE a “Four Walls and a Roof” video. It’s always been such a moment for me in the story and I feel like no one talks about it!
Absolutely BRILLIANT episode
Had a stressful week, then I saw you uploaded and it made my Friday!
Definitely wish Glenn stayed on the show more. Or at least appeared in a flashback or two. Heck, I would even settle for a spin off prequel on Glenn’s past as a pizza delivery guy! 😂

I didn’t I thought it was stupid how many fake outs in that season he had. The writers did him dirty too making him kill someone in their sleep just to foreshadow that dumb picture on the wall. Character assassination.

Great video! Just one more thing about Glen's character arc after this episode that you left out. He finds Enid and they journey back together. He helps her with the bleak attitude that she has. They enter the church and Glen give a fantastic speech to her about how people that die live on afterwards through the people that they have impacted. She asks him who are those people to you? He says his parents, Dale, Hershel, Tyreese. A really cool moment that gives Enid strength and hope and resonates even more after Glen dies. Glen becomes one of those that died but still influences and inspires Maggie, Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Enid, and others.
Well... not Enid... lol.
@@Sebastian-vc4xz Well it did impact Enid for the next 7 or 8 years after that. 1.5 years time skip between season 8-9 plus 6 year time skip after the bridge incident. But yeah, she eventually ran out of mileage. LOL!
@@ThePercussionRealm Ah yeah fair, I forget how much time they skipped.
Unpopular opinion or not, I can definitely see what you mean and agree to an extent. As much as I was happy to have Glenn back, I hated the fake out (especially given that I knew what was waiting for him).
That episode where they forced Glenn to kill the Saviours was honestly one of my most disliked episodes for the exact reasons you mentioned. Character deaths always feel the most impactful when it is because of their choices, good or bad. As such, Glenn dying due to his good nature and moral compass would be a fitting end that perfectly explains the darker path of the group afterwards. Thanks again for the video.
It would’ve been interesting if Glenn had died in ‘Thank You’ but Nicholas would’ve survived and had done the same thing he did when Aiden died, blamed something instead of himself. It would’ve been cool to see Maggie resent Nicholas and then he would be a character taken out by Negan suffering the death Glenn had in the comics making it ironic. That way Abrahams death wouldn’t have been overshadowed and it would’ve opened up the universe to a time where Maggie and Negan would see eye to eye on something. Where oddly enough she didn’t resent but thanked Negan doing bad on another character who was so hated.
But Glenn’s fake death scene was caused by Nicholas shooting himself, knocking Glenn off the dumpster into the horde of zombies. So how would Nicholas have survived if Glenn died?
100% agree! My favorite point you made was that Glenn’s absence in the second half of the season would have made a lot of sense in the context of the survivors’ dark turn
Without Glenn in season 7 the path the group took in the first half of season 7 would not have seemed so dark. He was needed to remind viewers that members of the group had never killed people.
This was a really good episode it was so hectic and I did not know what to expect
I had this exact thought the other day. Nice vid!
Hard disagree. They never should've done the fake dumpster death in the first place but he simply had to meet his comic book fate.
Thank You is my favorite episode and I also really like the 1st half of season 6, Glenn was my favorite character and the character arc they gave him was really good, and I specially love the way you break down the episodes you cover. Great video Thrifty 👍🏻👍🏻.
To me, this was the point when TWD started to decline. Up to then, the show had always prioritized realism and storytelling regardless of what happened in the comic. But once Negan was on the horizon, the show reverted to tricks and cliches to try and manipulate the audience into thinking certain events would or wouldn’t happen. It never recovered and S7 and 8 only got worse.
Hey, Thrifty Typewriter! I have a suggestion for a potential future video. You may be interested in possibly creating a character analysis video about Abraham. I feel like most people just kinda write off Abraham as the simple tough badass character when, in fact, there seems to have been so much more interesting aspects about him. Like his grief with losing his previous family, his purpose for surviving being to save the world, his desire to have children with Sasha, etc..
Just an idea! Anyways I enjoyed this video as usual!
I rewatched season 1 recent and oh my word I didn’t realise the walkers could run & climb and use objects like rocks to break things. I just remember them being slow haha
Fresh walkers are much more dangerous
@@Gavalixyno actually it was due to different producers in s1
Honestly speaking of this episode and Glenn dying to the Walkers it would have been the biggest gut punch because of who it is. Not Glenn as a character per se, but the type of survivalist he is. He was quick, smart, thrifty, knew how to plan escapes no matter the situation with his history as a pizza delivery boy. However... What do you do when you have a freshly dead body on you that is clearly heavier than you? A situation that despite you being strong woulda been near impossible to get out of and don't? Imagine if he died here and a few episodes later we had a zombified Glenn that Daryl, Michonne, or Maggie would have to put down?
Great vid man keep up the great work
AMAZING video. You truly nailed it.
I agree, it would've been so interesting to explore people not knowing what happened to him and some people still having hope he'd come back.
Him coming back was a ridiculous choice.

Of course. Thank you for watching!
I concur with your points. Watching this made me sob for Glenn all over again.
I keep getting your old videos on my “just uploaded” notifications 😂
Loving these videos. Thank you. Also: I know they are old but I loved this show so much.
I do think there was a really wasted opportunity to see the impact of Glenn going against his morals and going down a darker path. Glenn was always the moral compass of the group, he saw the best in people and gave people who wronged him a second chance, and he never killed until he was forced into it, and it really shook him, but he didn't live long enough for it to really affect him. I think it actually would've been great if they killed Abraham and maybe Sasha too as she doesn't really do anything after this and is just annoying, we can still get the revenge storyline with Rosita, but have Maggie lose the baby and Glenn live. Some people say Maggie shouldve died, but I think she's too important in the story going forward and killing her would be too much, especially as she was the last character tying things to the Greene family. But if she had a miscarriage because of what was happening to her and the trauma of the line up, that would definitely push Glenn into becoming more immoral and unhinged and becoming a darker character. Seeing Glenn vs Negan I think would've been a lot cooling and more satisfying than vs Rick, and Glenn couldve died in season 8 instead of Carl, and because he was the moral compass, Rick wants to make peace with Negan to honour him, as he was his best friend. I've only just thought of this now, but it actually makes a lotta sense, and would've been so much better. Maybe it wouldve been too much for Maggie to lose her baby AND Glenn, she'd definitely never be able to have the same redemption and forgiveness arc with Negan, but maybe Glenn could get her pregnant again and she could still have her baby
Should let u write the show cuz this would have been fire 🔥
mans COOKED 🔥
The thing is, they kinda teased that for Glenn with the whole Nicholas situation but a lot of that was wrapped up rather quickly. Even with that being said, I think Steven yeun was more or less ok with being done with the walking dead. They didn’t really know what to do with that character and in hindsight, if he has stayed attacked, idk if we would have gotten the movies he’s put out.
I totally agree, man. I was so sure Glenn ws gone, and the way he survived was super cheesy and made no sense.
They could have done a tribute to Glenn with someone else dying like he does in the comics, set them up as a valuable character. It felt like such a waste of time to bring him back because we all knew Negan was coming, and we all knew what Negan does.
Even though I was sad when Glenn died to negan I think it was a great way to show that negan is not afraid to kill
Negan killing Glenn was also an effective catalyst for Maggie's resolve to defeat him. If I recall correctly, it is her that sets the preparations in motion to engage them in battle.

pretty amazing that Scott of all people is one of only 2 OG Alexandrians to make it to the series finale, especially considering he survived this episode despite a gunshot wound and the only other original Alexandrian, Aaron, is a straight up main character by the end. Scott was the most untouchable Red Shirt in TWD history. honorable mention to Diane.
The only thing people think of related to this episode is the Glen fake out death, which sucks in a way, since it was such a well done episode that was tense from start to finish. I remember being really shocked and saddened by his "death" as it happened, but it immediately hit me that it was, in fact, a fitting, ironic and damn near heartbreaking end for the character.... then Talking Dead came on, and like you, I knew he was alive.
why did they do this? IMO, they were testing the waters, seeing how people would react to Glen''s death. Would they lose a lot of viewers the very next week or would people accept losing a fan favorite.... We will obviously never know if Im right, but it does make some sense.
Thank you for reminding me of the awesome scene where Rick empties the ak through the side of the rv using those wolves as backstops
Nice exploration of the episode, I actually always saw Nicholas as useless but this actually made me look deeper. Nicholas was useless and selfish but then he grew thanks to Glenn, the problem was in this scenario he was seriously out of his depth. He kind of represents the Alexandrians, he was selfish and useless but he ultimately means well the trouble is with the darkness of the world edging closer to home they are totally out of their depth.
Great video. I agree on Glenn. I liked his character, and at the time he was even more popular than Rick or Daryl. But... season 2 had a story for Glenn, then season 3, 4, and then 5. Season 6.. he was legit just waiting around moping after this episode, waiting for the bat.
This was the beginning of the end for me. we all basically mourned losing Glenn after the episode was over, even with Talking Dead being “grief counseling”, then to just magically allow him to survive in the most unbelievable scenario made me realize the writers only are aiming for viewership, not a good story. The walkers had been so little of a threat to the main group up until this point, so to have one of the most beloved characters go out the way he was brought in would have been pretty poetic. Glenn’s real death was the nail in the coffin for me. The show had become just shock value and it was an exhausting and bleak experience even tuning in every week.
I think it's also really stuffed that he sees his own death looking at the battered gorey pictures when he first kills at the savior base. Chills down my spine rewatching that.
Currently re watching season 6 so this is perfect thanks
The dumpster scene was a dead give away that he lived cause a main characters death needs to be seen by other characters to verify he died. That case he was all alone and no one to say he died was obvious he’d come back. Then ultimately dies in front of anyone.
very well thought and organized well done
it wouldn’t have been what anybody would’ve wanted. especially glenn who everyone loved. but in light of the spare time he was given and the actions he had to take despite being morally against it, you make a great point. i’d feel bad for maggie not being there with him in the moment but it would’ve spared her from witnessing the tragedy that came to be
Glenn's death, could of caused Rick too become overprotective, which could of lead into confrontation issues with Negan.
Just an idea, but love your videos man!
i agree its not even the fakeout death that bothers me really (ive gotten over it over time) but whats irritating is the fact that he doesnt serve any more real purpose to the story afterwards like you said. in fact, his remaining time alive did nothing but make his death more tragic by having him break his moral code and kill somebody before getting done in himself. however i thought he was already aware that he was going to be a dad? i could be wrong but didnt he know since that one flashback when he alludes to Maggie being pregnant?
Yea he did know, when they’re otw to hilltop, they talk about it extensively in the rv, and Abraham’s little innuendo about pouring the bisquick
Even before that moment.
In the first episode of this season when they are showing a flashback and it’s in black and white, the group is deciding who will participate in the plan. Glenn and Maggie have some dialogue about her staying behind for more than just being support for Deana. Implying that it’s something more now. It’s cute
@@brooklynbutter5357 yeah thats the moment i was thinking about! and @Nathan that moment was at the end of season 6 so it was definitely after this episode but i appreciate the help :)
Dude I have been saying this for years! The fake out with this totally took the impact of negan killing him out for me and I just didn't care. Effectively I was ready for him to be gone after the bait and switch stuff they pulled
Bro, if you’re doing the episodes all for s6 then I assume you’d do ‘Here’s Not Here’ next. Can’t wait!
One of my favorite moments is when rick is trying to start the RV and it doesn't start and he just hss this wide eyed defeated look on his face. One of the only rimes he looks truly lost
They should have given Glenn a storyline with Morgan. He really did seem to fit the “All life is precious” mentality and his death would’ve been properly set up
Carter could have died against the cause but died for it Nicolas too. I love this standalone scenes of characters like Carter, Nicolas and Jesse (being against Rick's help personally in Jesse case) being against Rick and the group but learned their lesson in their own way - just great writing, they nailed different characters cases instead of Alexandria people being a sheep horde doing every command
I hope you do an analysis on the episode “Still” in season 4. I don’t think you have done it yet, but it’s my favorite episode.
it was like a testing the waters and getting people ready for his death later
I have yet to watch season 11 and rewatch the show but seasons 3, 5, 6, and 9 are probably my favorite seasons of the show.
I would really like for you to do "clear" from season 3, one of my favourite episodes of the show.
I hope there’s a point where you discuss “The Grove”. Obviously the meme is the part everyone remembers, but to me, it’s my favorite episode, despite basically being a spin off of sorts.
It manages to be so disturbing, so intense, despite the fact that there’s barely any gore, and almost the entire main cast isn’t there. The moral arguments, the realisation that Carol and Tyreese might only have that one option, all before the execution was so gripping, and so heart wrenching.
It hit me harder than any other episode, even with how much I liked characters like Glenn or Herschel.
And I think it almost being a one off ironically helped make it better, since you genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen, and you could honestly show it to someone who’s never seen the series, while still having the same impact. It was just, *so* ridiculously good in my opinion.
you should make a playlist or something if the songs you use from the show in your videos cuz i can’t find the name of them anywhere 😭

Glenn wanted his comic death. The show runners were probably trying to see how the fans would react if we thought glenn was dead
This episode nearly made me quit. Then the cliffhanger positively sent me. I was officially done and haven't watched an episode since.
Even though the show has ended I absolutely love these recaps! Especially since I’m currently watching reruns. I’ll never get tired of TWD discussions 👏🏽
I regonized that intro, was the Dead of the night zombies round transition
I’m not mad that Gleen died to Negan.
I’m mad that they pulling the “subverting expectation” move by killing Abraham first and THEN killing Gleen.
Kinda F***ed up that they put the human life, and not even that but the life of a beloved secondary character. On a scale of who’s death mattered more.
Negan only killed Gleen in the comics and left everyone devastated.
If Show Negan only killed Abraham and the rest of the group moved on with their day it would paint Rick’s group as a bunch of monsters!
This episode brings me back to 8th grade. Seeing that episode and thinking my favourite character was dead. I was devastated. But a few days later I saw some behind the scenes pictures and I saw Glenn with Jesus (who hadn’t been introduced yet) and it gave me so much hope. Only for the next episode to be about Morgan and goat cheese man 😭. Then finally they reveal he’s alive. I’m over the moon! Until he actually dies..
In both situations, I’m devastated. But I think having that extra 3/4 of a season with him is well worth it. But I can’t help but think of the fake death scene being his last. The theories would be insane. About how Nicholas fell on top of Glenn and how Glenn could still be alive. On some Rick S9 shit where we don’t know if he’ll be back. But we all keep watching in case he does come back. and that would’ve been so cool to experience.
I liked that you brought up Talking Dead not having Steven appear because that was literally the #1 reason for every WD list that said reasons Glenn isn’t dead. Another thing from what I remember there were also photo leaks showing him filming the back half a S6 which also spoiled that Jesus was gonna be introduced which had people theorizing that Jesus rescues Glenn. Definitely one of my favorite episodes but the takeout does hurt it because it felt insulting that the producers thought the fanbase would fall for it. One of the things people know with TWD is that when someone dies another person has to see it otherwise it would cause a loose end that they wouldn’t be able to resolve in a believable way
next video you should analyze the group against terminus
maybe if nicholas ddnt knock glenn down and just died to save glenn instead, and the rest of the story still plays out as normal, that coulda been ok maybe, basically just remove the fakeout idk
Glenn’s my favorite character, s1, 2, and 3 being my favorite versions of o him. Bringing him back after this just felt, unusual, but I would’ve loved to see glenn live to the end tho
love the videos thrifty keep it up mate
hey, what song did you use in the "Glenn's death" part of the video?
11:25 this kills me even more, never really thought of it that way.
Would be crazy if Rick's injury foreshadows his immune.
To me this is where the show started to come undone. Where it became about gimmicks and not story.
It was already hanging on by a thread before that.
I remember watching this episode live and knowing as soon as talking dead came on that he was alive. Glenn was easily my first favorite character in the series especially from seasons 1-4. I knew he was alive, but I wanted so badly for him to be dead given the current circumstances. Cause the idea of my favorite series pulling this contrived fake out death gimmick was not a reality I wanted to face. In my head I feel like as the Lucille death is so sudden and there’s no proper goodbye for the character who gets the bat, this was really a way to give us a proper sendoff and closure for glenn while also giving us the sudden shock to the system that’s delivered later on. Still think the reasons behind it are cheap and to the shows detriment but there’s still some things peppered throughout I really appreciate here.
Can we please take a moment to appreciate the performance of the actor who played Nicholas
I always thought him killing during the satellite raid WAS a sign that the group’s moral compass had fallen. And it was a perfect parallel to Carol’s whole arc starting out too.
Basically signifying why the group falls apart like they do in the finale, because they even corrupted their own moral compass. Still, it’s a nice video and I’m not entirely opposed to your opinion! Well put and sorry your OG vid got age restricted.
Honestly I hated the whole “I guess that ricks group is bad too” plot, like yeah they’re murdering dozens of people but most of them deserve it, the guy Glenn killed had an array of pictures of dead people on his wall for crying out loud.
this week has been so exhausting. i think we can all agree some thrifty and glenn rhee content can ease our minds.
Yes, I completely agree the fake out death was so unnecessary. It took away from when he actually died. I felt this episode continuing the previous episode wasn’t done well. They could’ve just shown how the Alexandrians weren’t really prepared for the outside world. And show the Ricks group come back with just Heath and Scott. They would tell the Alexandrians what happened. This would show them that they need to learn from Rick and his group.
On top of that what if Maggie went through trauma and nightmares of the lineup just because it happens, and Glenn survives, so she either has more reason to hate Negan or Glenn hates Negan and begins conspiring to lead hilltop and rebel first
Instead of the episode ending with looking like Glenn was being eaten, they should have just shown the Walkers eating Nicholas and Glenn being trapped under the dumpster with it looking like Glenn had no way of getting out.
You have to cover “knots untie” I feel it is a action, comedy and character developing episode and also “ guts” is great too.
I think a trip to the Tractor Supply store could really minimize some smaller hoards.
I totally agree, Glenn is one of my favorite characters, and I didn't want him to die, but I really liked the Nicholas arc and it felt like it really exemplified how Glenn is just too trusting. I believe Glenn would have survived on his own, but he chose to put his trust in Nicholas knowing the area which ends up being his fatal (or not) mistake. It was pretty cringey and immersion breaking for him to survive under the dumpster only to die after not really furthering his character in a satisfying way.
I remember rage quitting from watching this show after that death.
*Thank You.*
