    For those fine seeds like lettuce, use a salt shaker. Make the holes larger so the seed will easily fall through, then just go down the row and shake your seed into the row. One of those shakers for Parmesan cheese would work as well. Just tape off half so it doesn't seed such a wide row.

    i agree with you on the difficult germination of carrots.
    i tried a new way this year with great results.
    i made the bed really fine and put the seeds direct on ( not in) the soil.
    then in cover the seeds with a thin layer of cocosoil and compact it really well.
    and water it well, in 5 days the first carrots apear..:D

    Looking good Erin! You'll catch up! Try those pelleted carrot and lettuce seeds from Johnny's. They have been a game changer for us as far as spacing and handling. I didn't thin my carrots or lettuce at all this year. Seem to take a bit longer to germinate but I really like them overall. They are starting to carry more and more pelleted seeds.I think I did see something you were doing that was pelleted in the video. Really enjoy your channel!

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  Před 6 lety

      My carrots are pelleted and I agree they take just a little longer but are definitely nice to work with. I love pelleted lettuce. All the head lettuce I start inside in plugs and if it's not pelleted it's so hard to work with. I wish all lettuce would be pelleted. Pelleted Salanova lettuce is one of the best lettuce varieties out there as far as I'm concerned! Thanks for watching! -Erin

    HHIPHIPWHORAY for the seader from EarthWay! I've been using one for 25+ years without any breakdowns. Only one time it failed to plant (this spring) when a spider made a web in the down shoot and plugged it from dropping seed, LOL. Luckily, I noticed it after two rows after Shelley, my wife, insisted I verify that there's seed on the ground or who knows how far I would've gone! 41 years of marriage = good listening skills.

    • @OurWyomingLife

    I have had an earthway seeder for years as well, but it is an overrated product. The concept is good, but the seed wastage rate is atrocious, especially with sweet corn. The design is older and other more precise seeders are now on the market for a lesser initial cost and savings in less seed waste.

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  Před 6 lety

      How does it waste seed? What brand of seeder do you prefer? Thanks for watching! -Erin

    • @AirplaneDoctor_
      @AirplaneDoctor_ Před 6 lety +1

      Our Wyoming Life The main wastage of seed I have found is corn. Rather than dropping single seeds at a basic uniform spacing, it tends to put out erratically with 2-3 seeds in one drop, then large space, then single, double etc. I have 4 different corn plates I have got from earthway, and they all are not so precise so to speak. Their engineering seems to be based on the perfect seed kernel which is unrealistic to anyone who has ever planted corn. To confirm my assumption, I carried out an experiment using feed corn I had harvested with full size kernels, it worked perfect, no doubles or skips. When RR sweet corn is $60 for 2500 seeds, erratic seeding costs money. I am not going to promote another seeder by name on your channel as it is poor form and disrespectful. Great video, always enjoy the informative views.
