Chris Stuckmann reviews Death on the Nile, starring Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, Letitia Wright. Directed by Kenneth Branagh. - Zábava
The original version of this movie, with Peter Ustinov, is one of my all-time favorites. This version is just "okay", but like you said, it's filmed so beautifully and is such a nice change of pace from the usual blockbuster movies, that it's nice to spend a relaxing evening at the theatre with this being shown.
What do you like more about the original edition?
@@megamikethemovieman The original gives the somewhat complicated story more room to breathe. We get much more time spent with Jackie (Mia Farrow) and understand the intense hatred she has for her former best friend. Linette is definitely someone who would rub a lot of people the wrong way; she's really rotten in the original! All the suspects have much more time to show their anger at her. Plus, the original has a beautiful score from the legendary Nino Roca!
@@megamikethemovieman The 1974 and 1978 versions of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.
The new ones are remakes.
As lavish and exuberant this version is, nothing can top Ustinov, Lansbury, Davis, Smith, Rotas music, Antony Powells costume design...u get the idea
@@paulmaloney9188 I will definitely have to check that one out. I enjoyed this new one for the most part, I had fun reviewing on my channel if you would like to check it out my friend.
I really liked the way they brought Bouc into this version of the story. Surprisingly one of the most impactful elements of the movie.
Emma Mackey stole the show. She is so good. I'm so happy for her as a fan of hers
She’s also incredible in Sex Education on Netflix
@@maingamer6846 this trash serie ?
Jens I 100% agree. Her performance as Jackie blew me away
She’s hot!
I lived across the road from her at Uni, we went on to live very different lives loool
Always have been a huge Agatha Christie fan.....can't have enough of her books being made into a movie!
Chris grew up with Death On The Nile
@@OGMillyMillz_ I understand...so many more great Agatha Christie stories though...
Highly recommend the TV adaptation of And Then There Were None from a couple of years ago, absolutely phenomenal
@@joyrowancasey788 That series was really good. Though I would love to see Branagh give that story a movie treatment as well.
Same here. Not only do I love Branaugh's Poirot adaptations but I also love the original film version of Murder on The Orient Express starring Albert Finney as Poirot as well as the 6 Poirot films starring Peter Ustinov and of course the legendary long-running tv series Agatha Christie's Poirot starring the definitive Hercule Poirot himself David Suchet.
I hope that Branaugh has more Poirot movies planned. I want to see him adapt next the likes of Five Little Pigs, Appointment with Death, Death in The Clouds, The Mysterious Affair at Styles and The ABC Murders.
Maybe Branaugh will also produce a series of Miss Marple films as well.
I actually quite enjoyed this one, even more so than Orient Express. I liked that we got to know Poirot's background a little more. He did a great job with acting and directing.
I thought the same thing. I really liked this one, too.
Really liked how they gave Poirits character more layered depth , backstory. The supporting cast of characters are very interesting, feel the story is interesting to keep me invested.
Same here.. I enjoyed this way more than Orient. The backstory was great and I liked seeing more or his past before he became this great detective
I agree.
Death on the Nile 2022 was really bad. The 1978 version was so much better and far more restrained.
The 2022 version was just one big bloat trash pile.
Yes! I share so many of your feelings, especially just being able to get a big budget murder mystery. It inclined me to love the movie especially and I personally felt it was stronger than Murder on the Orient Express. We need more of these types of movies greenlit, and I hope Branagh tackles more Christie canon in this style (I'd love to see And Then There Were None from him, and The Mirror Crack'd; with the latter I do wonder if that property is why he's said he's moving into Marple next). I personally liked most of the changes made to the original novel--they strengthened the themes and made the investigation/red herrings stronger imo (though I know many Christie stans would disagree with me). I've seen some Gal Galdot hate but honestly she fit the Linnett of the book well, I thought. She has to play the razors edge of a beautiful, rich woman who is... thoughtlessly and carelessly callous at turns but is not an evil or "bad" person, and in fact has many positive traits. Nailed it, imo (whereas the ITV Poirot bungled that character I feel). And the many other super strong performances outweighed any potential weakness there... the weakest link, honestly, for me was the unfortunate casting of Armie Hammer. Even without the scandal, I thought he was a weak Simon Doyle, though it's also very clear they carefully edited out scenes with him in it; it's a more present and major character in the book.
Seriously??? Most people thought it was predictable. With Murder on the orient express I don't think most people didn't expect that ending. Also after a Knives Out getting an Oscar nomination and knives out 2 coming this year as well on Netflix...this movie just seemed a bjt disappointing
@@nikitamohanan2124 Oh, it's incredibly predictable. The book is, too--or was for me, possibly in part b/c I knew the movie's casting already. Casting 100% messed up and I suspect Chris's note about a shot that lingered is related to this as well. I'm fine that people were disappointed w/ this but I personally thought it handled the book well--and it's not my favorite Christie book at that. MotOE didn't come together for me as DotN did overall as a film--my big thing isn't "can I guess the ending" but "how do all the performances, tension, beats, themes and story come together as a whole." And I prefer this one, especially thematically. ITV's Poirot did a much better job at MotOE whereas Branagh bested that series w/ his DoTN, imo. YMMV.
There is a three episode series of «and then there were none» that I really enjoyed, but I would love to see it turned into a film with the same director!!!!
@@apollorabbbit That mini-series is good but they have amped up the guilt in it, for everybody. The whole idea in the book is the ambiguity.
You should watch the original, this version is crappy. I'm saying this as a millenial.
I think the inclusion of Bouc in this film, added a lot for me. That particular angle added a lot of emotion to the movie. Emma Mackey is a standout among the cast. I think this is a slightly better film than Murder on the Orient Express because I think it uses its cast a bit more effectively. Murder on the Orient Express has a star studded cast, but apart from Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, and Michelle Pfeiffer, none of the rest really stood out to me. Here, while Mackey is a standout, but Bening, Brand, Letitia, Bateman, Okonedo, Gadot etc.... all have scenes where they make a strong impression.
Same! I liked his character and it helped give Poirot deeper development since he’s used as a plot piece to develop his character. I liked him. I can’t think really of any characters I didn’t like because they all fulfilled their role pretty well. I think Louise was probably the weakest. And the doctor lady.
Bouc was a horribly simplistic character that was nothing more than a plot device to push along the story for the poor writing.
It is a demonstration of everything that is wrong with modern film writing.
@@bighands69 its interesting bc bouc is a mix between two characters from the tvshow, and he falls short from both
Jesus loves you so much he died for you please accept him before it's too late the rapture is soon, God bless you ❤ ,,, ,,,
I agree
I think Emma Mackey's performance in this film does not get enough credit!

Hi Chris I strongly recommend British ITV's Poirot series, with the amazing David Suchet as Poirot. Each episode is basically a TV movie, very well produced and with some surprising actors in it - if you haven't, give it a try!
Yes! David Suchet is PERFECT as Poirot.
David Suchet is the best Poirot for me! Also the ending was brilliantly emotional for a TV movie
I don't know who wants to watch this woke garbage, when there is a version with Suchet and Emily Blunt.
@@zola1x1 "woke" my god wow how online do you have to be to think this was woke, if this one was woke the ITV drama was as well, heck Agatha Christie herself was legitimately "woke" for her day.
@@zola1x1 Geez man, can we just enjoy a good old fashioned murder mystery without even dragging "woke" bullshit or politics too it?
I was not that big a fan of Murder on the Orient Express, but I really liked this one! I think it had a better emotional through-line, and it was overall the more theatrical, heightened, melodramatic experience I wished the first one was.

To this day I feel the best thing Kenneth Branagh has given us is Emma Thompson's scene in Love Actually when she realised her husband (Alan Rickman) is cheating on her. She said that that was based off of real life, and who cheated her in real life (with Helena Bonham Carter)? Kenneth Branagh. Joking aside, he has made some amazing films, but, genuinely, that scene from Love Actually is imprinted in my brain forever.
Shoutout to Dawn French!
She is one of my favourite british actresses and its so good to see her in a big hollywood film (Especially being directed by Kenneth Branagh).
I haven't seen this film yet but she deserves to be appreciated for her work - She also plays the Fat Lady in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
I highly recommend Vicar of Dibley and French & Saunders for some great british comedies she's made.
Look considering theres Jennifer Sauders and Russell Brand, I say half the cast are average at best. Dawn turns in a dull performance well short of the Vickar of Dibley
I wasn’t familiar with The Orient Express, but was pleasantly surprised with this film’s comedic aspect, after the entirely self serious moustache origin story I thought the film would try too hard to be gritty. The film definitely pleased me, although a bit cliche, their are many twists but it takes A LONG time to get going, I was shocked to see it was only 2 hours when I googled the run time after viewing, but the actual death and the Nile crop up very late, but when the film gets going it is fun and quite fast, if only the whole film was like that. It definitely makes me want to go to the Nile, the (admittedly quite CGI-y] pyramids looked brilliant!
Get out of my brain hole, your thoughts are very similar to my review I did of the movie. We probably have similar tastes. Definitely check out my review if you would like my friend and let me know how I did with it?
The actual mystery-solving i think is done better here than in Orient Express. But the mystery takes an UNFORGIVABLE amount of time to actually commence in Nile. Ruins the pacing of the film completely. Orient never had a pacing issue, by comparison.
@@leonkuwata4510 I reviewed Death on the Nile as well on my channel if you would like to check that out my friend. You seem like a fan of the genre, so trust your thoughts on how you think I did with my review?
You realize the pyramids are in the middle of a huge modern city, right next door to a Pizza Hut sort of thing
Chris, been a fan for a while and just wanted to say that I'm so happy for you and all the progress you've made over the years. You're one of my favorite reviewers and I can't wait to see your review for The Batman!
I wish he engaged with his fans in the comments section. He never does. So sad he will never see your nice compliment or the nice, well thought out words of so many fans.
I have a fondness for Branagh that I genuinely cannot explain and watch all of his stuff, and I loved the Orient Express movie, so I'm definitely looking forward to this. I'm also a big fan of murder mysteries, and I don't remember who the killer is anyway, so this is gonna be great!
Artemis Fowl is still the worst movie he made but with Belfast and now Death On The Nile, it's clear that he's redeeming himself and I admire him for that. He has always been one of my favourite directors, if anyone can make a Shakespeare adaptation, it's definitely him
Branagh is a bit hit and miss for me.
His Shakespeare films are fantastic.
How did you like his Belfast movie?
My fondness for him was bourn from Gilderoy Lockhart. I also watched dead again at a young age and loved that
Dude, I've been meaning to say that for a while, you're awesome!!!
Your reviews are great, honest, and spot on!
Thanks, for real.

I hope they keep making these. I enjoyed both so far, and want more!
Now I'm curious what the "lingering" shot 🤔 was.
Having said that I found myself laughing when he interviews the lawyer and the camera is clearly following Poirot and Bouc in a circle and the lawyer actor is either slowly spinning to keep his face to the camera or some grip is slowly rotating him on a plate
Its what took me out of the movie completely. You'll notice it instantly, especially if you're now looking for it .
@@feck2594 just saw the movie today. I don’t know what “lingering shot” he’s referring to. I went into this movie completely blind, knew nothing about it, so if you told me which shot he’s referring to id probably remember but it didn’t stand out to me when I watched it

Chris I recommend you check out "And Then There Were None" from 2015. It's a 3-episode miniseries adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic and it's very well put together. If you haven't seen it, I think you would really enjoy it!
This is the best murder mystery in film, the aesthetic, performances, colour tone, music - literally everything made it super spooky dooks, it will always be my fav
IT’S SO GOOD
That one was fantastic. It had a more sharp interpretation of some characters, but that's fine. ATTWN was always sort of flexible between play and book, and I like that. I like never actually being sure whether X, Y, and Z are better or worse people depending on the adaptation.
That was a great miniseries & finally a truer adaptation of ATTWN especially at the conclusion with some liberties taken of course
Feels like on most of Chris's reviews now he's like "I wish we got more movies like this".
it's gorgeous! And can I just say, I was surprised at how well Russell Brand did. For once he wasn't just playing himself.
Awesome shout out in the beginning!! Thanks for acknowledging the Vang Brothers. Hmong directors are on the board!
I loved Death on the Nile! I had no idea what it would be about when I saw it and I’m pleasantly surprised that it was a murder mystery. I agree that their should be more movies of this genre because it’s so fun trying to decipher who the killer is as an audience member! Definitely going to check Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express now.
Without getting into spoilers, and even though I liked the movie, there's one thing that bothers me.
Poirot doesn't wear a mustache for any reason other than he just likes it.
Makes sense, given his obsession with symmetry and evenness, but I like to think Poirot's attention to detail and eccentricity don't need an origin story.
Without giving any spoilers there IS a definite reason why hes got this mustache and it's not what you say!
As someone who loved Murder on The Orient Express, I hope this is just as good/or even better.
It actually was disappointing IMO

Glad to see a review on this one! Just wish you would go back to grading movies.
My dad loved the PBS shows - Jeremy Brett was the perfect Holmes and is still that for me. David suchet was so amazing as Poirot
David Suchet absolutely EMBODIES Poirot! Some people just BECOME the character they play, and everyone who ever plays that role afterwards will be held up against their standard and David epitomizes that.

Based on your description of what you like in films... I’d say, Robert Altman Films (Gosford Park being my favorite... and The Player”.
Also, Baz Luhrman with The Great Gatsby, and Romeo & Juliet.
Lars Avon Trier... Passionate, dark and fascinating... but, filled with depth and studded with amazing performances. (Dogville, and Dancer in the Dark, even Melancholia are a few of my favorites of the “Dogma” crew.
Finally watched it for myself. Honestly I think I can watch Kenneth Branaugh adaptations of Agatha Christie novels forever. He casts so well and makes these modern movies feel of their time while uniquely changing here and there.
A month before This came out I stayed at a British themed inn, each room named after an English author and the suites after particular books. They mixed up our reservation and ended up in the Death on The Nile room as a happy accident. It was very Egyptian themed through English lens. The bathroom tile was chosen to emulate papyrus reeds, a "Vacation to Egypt this Winter" poster which was lifted right out of the book in which there were 2 copies in the room in 1 or the 2 decorative book stacks. The inn was next door to my favorite 1 screen art deco theater (they added a back lot so it's kind of a 2 screen theater) and I was disappointed that they didn't do some cross promotional thing possibly even with the other twee establishments in the area, and that that theater isn't even playing Death on the Nile. The multiplex down the road had it, but it's not the same.
I'm a huge fan of classic noir, Raymond Chandler's work and Philip Marlowe being a favorite of mine, and I would LOVE to see more 50's era flicks, like LA Confidential, which is spectacular.
Though I did not enjoy the ending of The Orient Express, I was very excited to hear this movie come out. I never looked at anything else besides the first trailer because knowing that its a mystery movie, I want to walk into it with no foresight. As we get introduced to the characters, the two that truly surprised me was Russel Brand as the Doctor, and Armie Hammer as the newly wed husband. I always saw Russel as a comedic actor, and you can never tell in this film.
Armie Hammer is an actor I have adored from Lone Ranger and Man from U.N.C.L.E., but with his recent "cannibal" scandal, my opinions on him changed a bit. Thus why I am so shocked t see him in a film so soon after the incident. I still enjoyed his performance as I always do, but I am not sure if I can look past the weird incident.
Outside world stuff aside, the movie really makes you think like a detective by seeing all the clues left through out the film. You feel like you are on the cruise with them, and I even felt Jacqueline's envy on a personal level.
Seeing Hammer's character switch to fast to Gadot within a few weeks was such a dick move, I was practically cheering her on to have her revenge (though the ending kinda ruined that). I don't know why people don't like the film. In my books the plot makes sense, the theme is very glamorous and scandalous, and I was glued from beginning to end.
One gripe I do have though is why doesn't Hercule laugh like he did back at the Express? Such a weird and quirky trope, its sad not to see it return in this film.
Anyway, all I have to say thus far. Thoughts anyone?
Edit: So I looked into it. As it turns out, Armie Hammer has been shown less and less through out the trailers after the first one. There was even a debate weather the movie should be released at all. They could have either edit him out or replace him with a different actor; but since Hammer plays one of the main characters with so much screen time and plot relevance, they have to keep him in and take his least important scenes out.
Hammer is a genuinely fine actor and it is a real shame the total shock he has brought on himself.
Hopefully whatever he decides to do in the near future is for the better not only for himself, but for the people he has affected so negatively on.
Just stumbled upon your channel. Great production! Really enjoyed it.
Also I love Agatha Christie and really enjoyed this video!
Funny enough I enjoyed this one much more that the Orient Express. I appreciated that he managed to create an atmosphere of grandeur and exoticness... I wish younger audiences would give it a shot...
How would you encourage younger audiences to see a movie like this?
@@megamikethemovieman me personally, I don't have a clue... maybe Hitchcock had the answer creating all the fake buzz around Psycho... something similar for social media. What do you think?

It's funny, I didn't even know this movie was being made. I'd expect the trailer of this movie to get recommended to me because I watched the reviews and trailers of Orient Express. Yet strangely enough I didn't know of the existence of this movie until I found it while randomly scrolling through Disney+.
The problem for me is that I saw two versions already, Ustinov's one and other whit David Suchet. So no surprise for the mystery part, and even if it looks gorgeous I'm not really down by it. Suchet for me is Poirot and his performance sets the bar really high. I'm waiting for "Belfast" though, that's the Branagh I want to see.
More me David Suchet is the best Poirot as well. He gets it spot on and I wish Agatha Christie could have seen it herself
Yep that's my problem with the new movies.. it's really hard to rewire my brain into accepting a Poirot that isn't David Suchet! He was perfect, even if the adaptation of the stories themselves weren't great sometimes - looking at you Roger Ackroyd episode!
Suchet is the best Poirot to be sure, but he had years and dozens of episodes to master the character. In the limited time we get, Branagh does a great job. I love the expansiveness and cinematic quality of his version. Some of the ITV Poirot episodes felt very enclosed and small-scale, which is fine, but certainly no match for seeing the same story realised for the big screen.
Branagh is An amazing Poirot. Pls when does Belfast come out
I love the classic Poirot stories. I have 'em in a collection on my bookshelf. I really liked Murder on the Orient Express and I can't wait to see this one.

This is what I thought- Wonderful. All the actors are brilliant to watch and the story goes along at a brilliant pace, even if it seems a bit slow in parts (I think it's the perfect pace tough, as it helps us to learn about the characters), Dawn French was massive fun, Emma Mackey and Kenneth Branagh blew me away with both their performances and Gal Gadot has the best line of the year so far: 'And enough champagne to fill the Nile!'. Great fun.

I did enjoy the first one ALOT! This was was enjoyable as well but I was able to figure it out quicker than the first one.
I tell a lot of people about the first one and they always love it
I need more mysteries that maybe fit more with Clue than they would a gritty thriller (though those are great in their own right). I want a little more camp and theatrics in film again. Not in the mood and definitely not meta... just like to sometimes get over the top without surreal. I trust you a lot Chris, you even enjoy more obscure and odd and experimental stuff I adore. I'd love to hear you explore Gregg Araki filmography. He's the weirdest filmmaker that seems to work on some notable TV stuff and his own indie weirdness, but few seem to know him in the mainstream, and once you watch one of his original films you know why, but still question how with so much WTF factor.
Chris, would you consider starting to export and upload your videos in 1440p or 4K? CZcams allows a much higher bitrate for 1440p and up, and so the image is less compressed. I think everyone would enjoy a crisper look at your tattoos and media collection.

I just saw this and enjoyed it pretty much. Only thing is, I figured out who “did it” as soon as everything went down. I was hoping I was wrong and I was missing something, but I was right about everything. Still a fun movie
Agatha Christie is one of the most published authors of all time; this is one of her best known and often reproduced tales of all time. I don't this you go into this expecting surprises. It is for the style and flare of this type of cast and production design. It is beautiful to behold.
I have Death in the Nile in multiple formats older version (1978) with Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, and Angela Lansbury, the tv version (2004) with David Suchet and Emily Blunt, read the original, and listen to the audiobook and have thoroughly enjoyed all, and this is no exception.

I watched this movie in theater and I really damn enjoyed it. Not as much as Orient Express but still a great film. Really, I thought I had the plot figured out after a kinda obvious hint but at my surprise the plot did have some surprises that I really didn't expect. That was awesome! I loved that. I am SO DOWN for more Agatha Christie adapts... Saying from you that this is again on a moving vehicle... Is there a murder mystery on a plane? And an actual big ship? A bus? Oh my, I had never seen nor read any of Christine's work or prior adaptations. I've only seen the new Orient Express and this one. As one who loves films and the process of filmmaking and the art of that... Death on the Nile and its prequel are much needed movies. We need those.

I saw the 1978 version of this movie with Maggie Smith & Angela Lansbury in the cast. Felt like it was really well executed and the twists worked, everything clicked. I'm curious what are they going to do with this version.

I had not read or seen previous adaptations of the story but I didn’t expect the action to not pick up until the end of the film
Can’t wait to see this!
As a huge Agatha Christie fan and also an admirer of David Suchet's portrayal of Poirot, I hated Brannagh as Poirot, and considered Murder On the Orient Express very Americanised, but i absolutely loved it as this kind of a film you don't see much of anymore. It's not Poirot, but it's an interesting character, all the actors were excellent, and the film looked gorgeous (except for some OTT green screen shots maybe). As someone who also loves ancient Egypt and enjoys Egyptomania themes in her murder mysteries, I cannot WAIT for the Death On the Nile, even though I know now to expect the style-over-substance American treatment from it.
Thank you for bringing attention to this franchise! I feel like it doesn't get the attention it deserves!
There is a joy, seeing French and Saunders in a movie, that will always engage me in a movie.
"There are a few performances that are a bit over-the-top."
It's Agatha Christie. There's bound to be at least a good handful of over-the-top characters.
Gotta work on the certificate error on the Shelby Oaks website. It might get people blocked trying to get to the website.
Loved watching Case Closed as a kid
Planning on seeing this tomorrow. Never did see Murder on the Orient Excited though...
Just seen this today alongside Marry Me and Scream, really enjoyed this, loved the french accents. Makes me want to visit Egypt too 👌
I will welcome u
Chris Stuckmann should review Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula
Love murder mysteries. What other similar movies would you suggest? Ive seen Murder on the Orient Express and Knives Out. Keen to hear what others people recommend? TIA
The opening sequence of this movie is really good
Chris, have you heard of the movie "summit of the gods" ? It's a French animated movie based on a manga by Taniguchi, and it was my personal favourite film of 2022. There wasn't much advertising for it, but i think it could be right down your alley
Loved this film! I liked it a lot better than the first film.
No😂
Wow, we got a review within a review. Stuckmann-ception
