The Tree of Life | Moral Of The Story (Film Analysis)

  • Ever since its debut, The Tree of Life has been the subject of intense debate. Is it theologically profound or a pretentious mess? Whatever your opinion, it's bound to be strong. I believe The Tree of Life is remarkably profound and, perhaps, the most ambitious film ever made. In this analysis, I breakdown the message I took away from Terrence Malick's magnum opus.
    Questions to Consider:
Is there value to life if there is no creator?
If there is a God, who is he to us?
How do the family drama and universe sequence connect?
Does the material world offer spiritual satisfaction?
    Songs:
Song 1 - Calme by Ever So Blue
Song 2 - Circadian by Alan Ellis

Malick's brother was indeed a guitarist who took his own life around the age of 20. It's so autobiographical... and universal.

I remember watching the Thin Red Line when I was 18, I did not get it, I thought it was a slow boring version of Saving Private Ryan. 10 years later I rewatched it and I was left in awe of the struggle within us between light and dark. When I went to see the Tree of Life, after the movie had ended, no one left their seats for about 5 minutes. Incredible movie.

I find this movie to be the absolute best work ever, despite the fact that I have watched it hundreds of times, I cannot find the plot course. Strange as that may seem, but I continue to watch it. I was born in 1960, and this is by far the perfect period correct masterpiece. Calm and serene narration seems to force each individual to connect with the plot intimately and personally. I felt the Spirituality from the very beginning. I will continue to re watch it even though I find it ambiguous. I have FAITH in GOD that I shall see the light

This is the most brilliant film I have ever seen. Thee very definition of film. Communicating with images and dialog is ornamental. Every frame, visually, communicates the significant insignicance of each individual in the grand scheme of creation. Yet, offering the ultimate message; that the sum of all individuals contributes heavily to the beauty of life itsekf. Breathtaking.

Attachment trauma. Mother is anxiously attached, Father is a dismissive avoidant - Father had a very traumatizing effect in all children. Babies and small children do not see themselves as seperate from their parents and think when dad or mom is upset its my fault (i need to behave to make them feel relaxed so that they protect me and feed me, or I need to not show emotions, because emotions would get me in trouble). Babies literally think their parents are God. This whole movie is so focused on "God why" "I blame God in the sky" but it really should be "My father was abusive and emotionally unavailable, he has his own issues and I need to heal my trauma (self care, self forgiveness, emotional release, self love, therapy...)." Trying to find all answers in a book (Bible) will only give you partial answers.

I disagree on the final point that no other film has ever "transcended the material world", the films of Tarkovsky, Bergman, Bresson, or, for a more recent example, Apichatpong Weerasethakul come to mind.

If it was so easy to make a profound and transcendent film which wins the Palm d'or in Cannes, anyone could do it. If you want characters, watch TV; If you want story, watch popcorn movies; if you want dialogues, go to theater; if you want visual poetry and real cinema, watch Malick's films. The only controversy should be why the french have to teach americans to appreciate their own artists. Malick's work is art, not an entertainment product, take it or leave it, his films are a meditative experience and I love to inhabit them. Great video!! Thanx!!!

I am not a particularly religious person, but I completely agree with this analysis of the film: I interpreted it to emphasize that, despite the relatively petty grievances and quaint triumphs and failures that dominate our brief individual existence, each of us is part of an unfathomably grand, eternal, harmonic whole that is suffused with majesty, beauty and, above all, grace. Pain, terror, loss, injustice - all the searingly difficult aspects of the human experience - must ultimately be understood as integral and inextricable parts of this same, ultimately beneficent, cosmos. The changes in scale and the meditative pace of the film are incredibly effective at conveying this idea. The fact that Malick is able to evoke this concept without resorting to schmaltzy religious imagery or overt sermonizing is testament to his talent as a filmmaker and storyteller.
As with other Malick films, there are also many moments that deliberately draw attention to the phenomenological beauty and bittersweet wonder of the fleeting, quotidian moments that collectively make up the fabric of our existence. Malick seems to suggest that afternoon sunlight dappling through the trees onto a suburban lawn contains just as much beauty and importance as the birth of a nebula of incomprehensible size. It's a wonderful way of understanding the world and our place in it.
I saw "The Tree of Life" during its theatrical release. I was moved to tears by the ending, experiencing a potent admixture of sadness and deep catharsis. So affecting was the experience of viewing the film that I have never been able to successfully revisit it in full without being overcome with emotion.
"The Tree of Life" is not a perfect film. But its unparalleled ambition is undeniable, and Malick manages to mostly pull it off, effectively conveying ideas that are at once extremely subtle and deeply profound, even transformative. And while I would argue that many films have successfully transcended treatment of "the material world" and successfully dealt with matters of faith and the spirit, there are very few films that are able to actually catalyze a spiritual experience in the viewer. This is one of them.

This film is indeed glorious. You however are overthinking the main theme which is the way of Grace or Nature and which one should prevail. He also gives us an answer in the love everyone feels for R. L. the artistic son who dies. When the mother asks God "Where were you" during her grief, that triggers the creation sequence which in my mind is God saying I was creating all this.............. which lead to you. Absolutely love Malik, his message is so subtle and yet so strong.

Interesting. My interpretation is wildly different than yours. I think contrasting the bits and pieces of this family’s life against the history of Earth shows how humanity is such a tiny fraction against its billions year history. Yet, as humans, we love as big as the cosmos and believe as far as the furthest star. I think showing the grief and the faintly through their time on Earth illustrates that the universe and God is everything to them. But they aren’t everything to the universe. Eventually the earth will die in a couple billion years when the sun will engulf our planet. We only really have a few moments here to make any impact. I think this film brings that out very beautifully. I also think that as an atheist, this movie had great impact on me. I think that’s beautiful as much as I think it’s beautiful the film had an impact on you. Both analysis are valid in their ways even if different.
