If you look carefully, no one had TV's or PS3's or microwaves or refrigerators that worked all day or most didn't even have electricity 24 hours a day, yet, in the majority of the pictures you could see the glee in all their faces that was real for just being photographed. As hard a life it was for most, they were happy being with friends and family. There was so much to learn from our ancestors.
Thanks for sharing! My Great Grandfather Joseph was from PICO (Ribeiras I think) He was born in 1837. He was a fisherman. He moved to Boston in the 1850’s and became a Whaler. My Great Grandmother was Antoinette Olivera My grandmother was Louisa Avila.
My Father was also a whale hunter (glad it's over) and I was born on Pico but left to Canada when I was two. I know Riberias very well, nice place and good People,,, Thanks for the comment...:)
Loved looking at the pictures of old Pico . My grandmother was born in Pico ( Avila.and Oilvera family of eight from Ribeiras I believe ) Some migrated to Canada , some to California and others to Massachusetts.. It is a beautiful way to honor our ancestors who were strong ,courageous, religious resourceful. We should never forget our beautiful heritage .
Thanks for the Video Tony. My gg grandfather was a sailor who jumped ship in SA Australia. He was born in 1836 Manuel Antonio who might be son of Joao Francisco Antonio whose father was a Goulart from Sao Mateus. All of us only knew he came from Portugal. So not really sure if he came from there but there is a Manuel Antonio that was born there with the same date. Don't know if it was him. Just have to use a bit of imagination i guess.
There are many Manuel Antonio's. He would have been my Great Great grandfather and I am over 60. The Manuel there had a brother called Joao. They have no records there at all for Manuel, for marriage, children or death notices in Sao Mateus. From all sources they said he had migrated out of the Azores. His sister would have been Maria Rosa born in 1839 and died in 1889. Could she have had a Manuel Antonio ? He also had a sister called Delfina, Rosa and Jeronima.
Yes I am, but first I will be getting Married this summer and then I will be coming to introduce my new Pride to my Famil in Pico...:) Thankyou for the comment...:)
