Should You Add A Deer Waterhole Where You Hunt?

  • Adding water for deer can be as simple as buying a 100 gallon water tank from the local TSC and grabbing a shovel. However, should you even add a waterhole to your deer hunting parcel? Even if you already have water on your land, adding water can be an outstanding option! This video discusses if you should add water on your land, what kind of water deer prefer and why you can make your waterhole a sure fire hotspot for thirsty whitetails this hunting season. It may be time to add water for the local deer herd, right now!

    Great videos and superb knowledge, not a lot of love though for us below the Mason Dixon line. I’ve tried multiple times to reach out to Dylan and Jeff to no avail. I know… I’m busy and have multiple clients.. I offered to pay rates and then some. Still no contact. I’ll keep watching and make my own approach to apply their knowledge down south but sad they only respond to.. well I don’t know who they respond to. But they must be doing well not to need average Joe that loves white tail hunting and to show common courtesy. Keep up the good videos guys. Thanks for that I guess

      We appreciate it JB! Unless on a comment, neither of us can respond to contacts unless through existing clients, friends, etc. Both of us only work by the day...same with Wes, Joe and Kevin. All contacts go thru Jessi, thru our website at info@whitetailhabitatsilutions.com.
      I hope that helps...we get dozens of requests per week at times, to help folks out, so we respond with as much free content as possible. But outside of that we have to follow a very strict protocol to maintain the business and schedule clients efficiently.

    More good content Jeff, as a first time waterhole user last fall it works!! Actually got to watch two does try to keep a red fox away from my water tank on one hunt last fall, that was fun to watch. another factor of a running creek is the noise. So we had several bucks on a public tract here in smoking hot Texas coming to a small tank on camera. They were semi-regular up until about sept 25, just days before opening day of archery. Why do they change their habits in that last week of September so often? It’s too hot for guys to be out pre scouting especially in this spot. Any theories on why they are changing habits in that window every year?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety +2

      Awesome observation! I started writing about the annual whitetail shift about 12 years ago...one of my original concepts. This is most typically true of bucks, as the habitat they require during the Summer is not the habitat that they require during the Fall. Here is one of my articles but if you Google or CZcams search, "annual whitetail shift", my content will come up at the top. Bucks shift on average about a mile to 1.5 miles. Often hunters think they go nocturnal when really they just move. Hope this helps!

      That's what we first did years ago...bad idea, deer avoid them that way except for in the lower hunting pressure states. Check out my waterhole playlist library...I talk about that a lot. Most states a bad idea not to bury it most of the way...

    My WHS plan was to put two 150 gallon stock tanks in but am having second thoughts due to several cases of CWD in my county of Wyoming. I'm just wondering now if I would be setting up a situation where the disease would spread.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety

      I don't see how it could? There is an extreme over reaction to CWD in general. If that's the case would have to get rid of all natural scrapes, rubs, food plot entryways, soft mast, natural waterholes, acorns, etc. I have many, many clients in the "CWD Zone" here in WI that have used waterholes for 20 years...CWD has been here since 2002. They even had a scientific study in MO that showed baiting was very low risk on the priority scale.
      Hope that helps ☺️

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety +2

      Morning Mark! Close enough to represent more of a funnel of afternoon food source movement but far enough away from the food source that you can get in and out of an adjacent stand without spooking any deer on the food source. Typically within 100 yards...50-75 yards is about right, depending on stand location and access.

  • @thomasb3101
    @thomasb3101 Před 4 lety +1

    Jeff, what are your thoughts about water holes potentially aiding the transmission of CWD? I have used water holes effectively for 7 years. I'm in SW WI as well, in an area with CWD present. I want to do all I can to minimize CWD transmission. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety

      First off the CWD sky has been falling here in SW since 2002...please don't believe the over-hype. But I do not believe there is a concern in any way. No more than natural scrapes, rubs, acorns, browsable shrubs, natural water sources, stump sprouted, at fields, food plots, roadside ditch planting, cedar trees in deer yards, etc. ☺️ Also tanks are much less likely to spread EHD than natural waterholes...as they do not create the drying and cracked mud around the water.
      Again tho...CWD is highly, over-rated and iver-hyped. Likely why some states do not even test for it...

    • @gavinsmitty23
      @gavinsmitty23 Před 4 lety

      I read that CWD also spreads from sperm. I wouldn’t worry about it, most cases are from deer farm anyways, atleast it is here in Michigan.
