    In Singapore, Kevin had just finished doing a demonstration with Beyonce (his cello), so he needed to put her back in the case before going on with "Aha!" The choral part at the beginning is a time filler to let Kevin get back. At 12:13 Avi sees Kevin coming back, so he begins singing his part. At 12:23 he hits his first really low note, and the *first* speaker blows out. At 12:32 the camera pans back and you can see that Scott and Mitch have moved closer to each other and to Kirstin in order to make room for Kevin.
    This is a fan video; taken on a smartphone. The video shows only what the fan holding the phone thought was important, so it never actually shows us Kevin, but we can still *hear* him, so we know he's there.
    Also, note that the quality of the sound deteriorates as the video progresses. This was not caused by a problem with the phone; it was caused by Avi. Mitch was jetlagged, so he'd compensated by drinking two Red Bulls, which was arguably one Red Bull too many. So just about the time Mitch starts singing his "Aha!" solo the caffeine and sugar cut in and Mitch goes hyperactive in his upper register. Naturally, the camera is watching Mitch. Everyone is *listening* to Mitch. But if you try and ignore Mitch you'll hear Avi, still singing low notes into his microphone, and blowing out speaker after speaker in the process. By the end of "Aha!" Avi has systematically destroyed the Star Vista's sound system. It's my favorite part of this entire performance.

    You did this the right way. I always tell people they need to check out the official video first to get an idea of what the song is about...THEN watch the Singapore live version. A little behind the scenes story on the live version as I've heard it: The song previous to "Aha" was a cello solo by Kevin. During that solo, the rest of the group was backstage taking a break. Mitch was suffering from jet lag and downed two straight Red Bulls. Kevin finished his cello solo and went backstage to put the cello away as the rest of the group came back onstage to perform the gregorian opening, which explains why he isn't onstage. Kevin returns to the stage (not seen on camera) just as Avi hits that low note and does the first damage to the theater's sound system! Then Mitch's Red Bulls kick in and he proceeds to go completely insane while Avi continues to joyously shred the sound system in the background! And thus the live performance than most Pentaholics consider to be the group's all-time best...and it apparently was only captured on this fan video!

  • @lesaahrenstein6360
    @lesaahrenstein6360 Před 3 lety +12

    If you notice at the beginning there's a whole space between Kirstie and Mitch. The chorale part was written because Kevin was putting away his cello away. When the part gets to Avi you can see real quickly Mitch moving over and for the song The Space Between Mitch and Kristen is smaller. The camera just did not pick up Kevin who's next to Scott remember that this was filmed off of someone's phone and since it's Mitch singing the whole song that's where the camera stayed. Great reaction I love when people do the studio and then the live. Avi wrote this piece choral music because he is a classically trained singer in Opera. Fun fact: when Kevin join Pentatonix he did not know he could sing. Avi taught him how to sing.

    • @rlhcat7662
      @rlhcat7662 Před 2 lety +3

      FYI, Avi did not write this piece. It is a well known Latin piece for classical choral groups. He did bring it to the group, because his prior group had sung it, and they needed something to sing while Kevin was putting his cello away.

    You, sir, have an excellent ear. I don't think I've encountered another Reactor who really understood the insane musical intricacy of this arrangement: all the quick interlocking off-the-beat stuff. Good on you for pointing it out and demonstrating. It must be very hard to keep synchronized in performance, and all the more credit to PTX for (I'm told) almost always including it in their concerts over the years.
    Also an A+ to you for recognizing Avi's overtone singing (I think the term you were searching for was "overtone series"), which so many commentators (even the Sing-Off judges) seem to miss, partly because it seems so impossible that a bass in an a cappella band can do that. That's something Avi is able to do -- there are videos devoted to him demonstrating it for audiences if you're curious.

    Great reaction!! 😊 This is old school PTX.... I really enjoy this one! Avi's overtone singing is a great addition to the overall arrangement and feel of the song and Mitch is almost supernatural, especially for a guy! Amazing really! Though I almost feel physical pain for my own vocal chords whenever I hear people singing that high. I don't tend to enjoy those types of registers much for that reason. However, I feel that it goes well with the song in this case, even if the live version is almost too much for me. These guys are all very talented and really know how to use their talent well. Kevin was right there on stage for all of Aha! During the chorale piece (brought to them by Avi) there is a big space between Mitch & Kirstie, where Kevin sat playing cello for the prior song. During Avi's solo, Mitch moved to center stage, Scott followed and Kevin took Scott's place at far right. Unfortunately, the person taking this video never showed the whole stage again, but this performance would be so different without Kevin's crazy beats and rattles and whooshes.

    16:04 is actually Scott doing the high note. If you listen closely when Mitch does the count, the note is lingering in the background.

      QoFyReacts so you’re admitting it in private, so it DID happen! Gotcha! On another note, another recommendation, this time VoicePlay. There’s a very funny skit from their live shows czcams.com/video/jwgz9BQQtWI/video.html it’s the Chicken Song. The fifth member on stage in this is Tony, who J None replaced. You actually saw Tony in the mega collab Just Sing. Well here’s a video with him in it!

    This may sound weird, but I actually prefer the Singapore version. I think it's because only the music is the focus instead of the story plus they seem to be much more emotionally connected in the Singapore performance. I like this a lot, but the Singapore version absolutely blew me away.

      Also the entire video, I and I'm sure lots of others were talking to the screen saying, "Just wait" over and over again. I've heard that when Mitch goes down to the floor avi blows the speaker's out. I also sent you a question on DM.

Then, I really like Live in Singapore, because Mitch OWNS IT, you can tell he really is into this performance. And QoFy, i love watching yoru videos, because I LEARN more about this amazing group as you break it down. Thank you and look forward to many more PTX, Superfruit, Avi and Ko reactions.
