How to Change a Flat on an Electric Bike with a Hub Motor

  • 1. Make sure the system is turned off, consider removing the battery pack
    2. Consider putting the bike in a stand or flip it upside down (onto the seat and bars)
    3. Use scissors or other cutting tool to snip any zip ties, disconnect the motor cable
    4. Shift down to the lowest gear (this makes removing the wheel easier)
    5. Use a wrench (15 mm in this video) to loosen the bolts on the rear wheel, this bicycle had a 40 Nm torque rating 9~30 Torque Pounds) and torque wrenches might be useful for this
    6. Once the bolts are loosened you can pull the derailleur down and out of the way
    7. If the tire isn’t flat, you may need to take out excess air (this would be the case if you’re swapping tires), also take out a retaining nut if your stem is threaded like in the video
    8. Massage the tire and prepare to remove it using tire levers, plastic levers won’t damage the tube, tire or rims as easily as metal tools might. Slide the lever all the way around to get one side of the tire completely free, you often do not need to remove the tire if you’re just patching a tube or replacing it. Most tires are rated 2,000 miles (3,000 kilometers) before needing replacement.
    9. When reinstalling the wheel, if your bike has a hub motor be sure to index the dropout with the motor cable and alignment nut so that the motor will spin the same direction and no cables will be twisted or sheered. Sometimes the metal bump that lines up with the dropout acts as a small torque arm to provide something for the motor to push against.
    10. Make sure the brakes are aligned and that the axle is completely seated before tightening things down.
    11. To avoid flats you can get Kevlar lined tires and thicker tubes, there are also liners and sealent that can be added to some wheel setups to increase durability. Sometimes there may be something embedded in the tire itself that punctured the tube, therefore it is a good idea to mark were the valve is aligned with the tire incase you need to fully remove the tire from the wheel, that way once you find the hole in the tube, you can lay the tube on the tire lining up the valve and tire mark and find where the problem in the tire which will be in the same location as the tube patch. If you do not do this and there is something in the tire itself like a nail, a piece of broken glass, or a rock, it may damaged your new tube or repair. Careful about running your hand on the inside of the tire as you may cut your finger if there is a sharp object in it.

    He never finished the job. By the time he would have re-plugged the battery cables after carefully lining them up so as to not get them misaligned and then replaced several zip ties, trimmed them and replaced the battery and then pumped the tire back up to correct pressure... phew, you've just doubled the time this demo took. Btw, out on the trail I always find I' never remember to bring my bike stand so much easier and quicker to leave the wheel in place and just remove a section of tire rim near the puncture, pull out a piece of tube, patch it, stick it back in, reinsert the tire rim, pump up and go.

    You don’t need to completely remove the wheel to replace the tube. It just needs to be lifted enough to get the tube out and replaced. That way the cables can be left in place, although the cable ties may need to be cut and replaced.

  • @ephtea614
    @ephtea614 Před 9 lety +12

    On my stromer, if I don't have to actually change the tube, I've patched a tube without pulling the wheel off. The tire is a lot easier to get off of the rim than my wire-beaded road bike tire. If it's just a simple puncture then I just pop the bead out on one side, pull out source of the puncture, pull out the section of tube I need to repair and pop it back together when the repair is done. I hate unbolting and cutting zip ties. Not only that but the potential to lose the small spacers on the hub shaft is eliminated this way. Only problem is bike wants to fall over even with the kickstand down with this method. I have to lean it against a wall or tree or something.

    Can’t this be done without actually removing a tire rim, if you can identify where the leak is coming from you don’t have to remove the rim from the frame, especially if you’re on a bike path somewhere you don’t have access to a bike stand . Can’t you just take out the tube where the leak is and put a patch on. That’s what I used to do that when I was much younger person on a regular bike. Does the same thing apply on the electric bike style rims?

  • @Dragnmastralex
    @Dragnmastralex Před 4 lety +1

    I wish my electric bike was this easy to remove that damn back tire. for me I have to almost completely dissassemble the entire rear of the bike. all 22 nuts and bolts and they are on the inside of the frame that I can't remove so I have to squeeze my hand down into the bike and barely hold the bolt while I kill my back hunched over it trying to turn a screw 100 times. removing the kickstand, fender, butt plate, disc brake, chain, 6 axle bolts, wired secure plate, and THEN the frame bolts. Now I can slide my tire back far enough to unhook the motor wire and slide the chain off the axle to release the tire. by myself I have to take breaks or I'd die... whole process takes about 6 hours to change a flat.

  • @deimosphob
    @deimosphob Před 5 lety

    Just use your hands to take the tire off, it's not that hard. Tire levers of any variety can damage your tire. Also, keep the tube as a spare and go tubeless, its so much better, you don't get pinch flats so you can run lower tire pressure and get more power to the ground/go offroading.

    This is to change a tube....you do not have to take of wheel to fix a flat by patching the tube....i was fixing my own flats when i was 9 or 10 years old....turn the bike upside down...first find your problem... nail or glass or thorn....mark the rim at that spot....release the tire all the way round....pull out around eight to ten inches of tube...find you puncture on the tube....patch it....put everything back....including air ....and bingo...only need to remove wheel on replacement of tire....because you can actually replace tube without totally removing wheel. Most of the vids on this subject are total overkill !!!

      I don’t have a car and the nearest bike shop isn’t really within walking distance and it’s somewhat hazardous traveling on foot without any vehicle as there isn’t always sidewalks for pedestrians.
      So when the bike breaks down, it does put me in a compromising position. Maybe e-bikes aren’t reliable substitutes for commuter vehicles… 😄 I can’t say I am technically confident to deconstruct all the stuff on the rear wheel to separate it from the bike
