    SABATON HISTORY LINKS:
Despite restrictions that were put on the German navy after the Treaty of Versailles, the Kriegsmarine rebuilt in the 1930s with one goal: to be bigger and better than ever. Two powerful Bismarck-class battleships formed the pinnacle of the German naval warship production. When the British caught wind that the Bismarck was out in the open in May 1941, they in turn formulated a goal of their own: to take it down for once and for all. The Sabaton song 'Bismarck' sings about the chase, the battle in the Atlantic and consequent fate of the Bismarck.

So, a lot of physics condensed into a short explanation.
Ships float because they displace a greater mass of water than what they weigh. The heavier a ship, the larger it tends to be, as the overall density has to be low enough that it can still float. When a ship starts to flood, the weight increases, and the balance shifts until either the flooding stops and the water is pumped out, or it sinks. Thus, battleships tended to have heavy armored belts around their most vulnerable sections, designed to defeat enemy fire, as well as torpedo belts that allowed them to distribute the force of the blast across a wider area and reduce the chance of the explosion punching a hole in the side. They couldn't be strong everywhere, but they were strongest where it mattered the most.

That was a great reaction on many levels.
Respect that you took the time to do this. Not many have and you have suddenly earned many many plus points for recognising a gap in your knowledge and taking the time to fill that gap
It does make each of the Sabaton songs more powerful in their impact.
We got got see how great is the dedication of the band to their art
We got to see how valuable the programme is in regard to understanding the story behind the songs.
And it makes you think. The death toll on the two ships. Just like that.
And look at the multi-cultural fan base of this group. sixty years ago, we would have been trying to kill each other. When governments vie for power and wealth, who suffer?
If any band earns their rewards this one does.

Bismarck sank Hood in three minutes from a single barrage.
It took a fleet of ships shooting at the Bismarck for three hours to just disarm it.
The Royal Navy didn't even technically sink Bismarck, his crew triggered explosives and scuttled the ship to prevent him from being captured.
Also fun fact, one of the surviving crew members of the Bismarck was a cat named Sam.

"fun" fact: the heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen" that sailed alongside the Bismarck was captured by americans after WW2 and survived 2 nuclear bomb tests, the eugen was then tugged to shallower waters where it capsized about 6 months later and to this day still lies there
addtional fun fact: when the Bismarck sunk, its bow went under first according to historians so it didn't capsize on the surface, but after it took on more and more water the ship actually did somekind of underwater sideway U-turn, so it sank right-side up, once below the water it turned right-side down, then the main cannon turrets fell out of their sockets (cuz you don't need to hold something in place if its own weight can support itself) then the bismarck "landed" on the bottom of the ocean right-side up. (so kinda like whitebeard of One Piece when he was killed his body was still standing you know... sorry.. NERD!)

Ships float by Displacement. if it displaces more water than its weight, it will float. thats why heavy ships are also HUGE. their volume is their bouyancy. Bismarck and her sister ship, the Tirpitz had a displacement of around 41,000 tons each and over 50,000 tons at full combat load.. thats 50,000 4 door hatch back cars, which was the largest ship ever built at the time and it would remain so until the introduction of the Yamato class Battleships (65,000 tons normal/ 71,660 tons combat load) of the the Imperial Japanese Navy in the latter stages of ww2 during the pacific campaigns.

the bismarck was actually deliberately sunk by the orders of officers on board. the crew put dynamite on vital parts of the ship to sink it. so the ship wasn't "really sunk by the allies", though it would have sunk like a few hours later and even with taking more hits still float, if the germans didn't decide to damage it intentionally themselves

If you think Bismarck was tough, have a look at the history of the ship which set out with Bismarck - Prinz Eugen! In 1946, after months of neglect, the US tested two NUCLEAR BOMBS on a fleet of older ships including Prinz Eugen.... months more neglect, because of the radioactivity, FINALLY saw Prinz Eugen sink..... About Bismarck - the British 'planes nearly torpedoed one of their own ships. Luckily the fuses did not work and the ships and planes survived. When the 'planes set out again and did find Bismarck, they had been rearmed with torpedoes carrying fuses which did work.... HMS Dorsetshire would have picked up more survivors but was afraid of a U-boat in the area - which there was. U-74 picked up some survivors after the British left.

Ships float based on the principle of "displacement" - the idea is that a ship "displaces" enough water so that it's effective density decreases to something less than or equal to water (physics wise, it will be equal to).
You may see this as FORCE(buoyancy) = FORCE(fluid)
"Archimedes' Principle" is the basis for this, if you feel like going down the fluid mechanics rabbit hole.

There's a theory with how the ship slipped beneath the waves that he was scuttled by the crew, since the British fleet struggled to sink him with their guns and torpedoes. They originally wanted to use the USS New Jersey as a stand in for the Bismarck, but it was cheaper and less red tape to just have Wargaming recreate it digitally.

"- was the largest battleship ever built -" - at that moment. Larger followed soon. The Iowa class and the Yamato class, the latter being the heaviest battleship - 72 thousand tons - with the most powerful guns - 18.1" - ever mounted afloat.
"The Hood had more guns than the Bismarck" - nope, both had 4x2 15" as main battery, and Bismarck had a heavier secondary battery. Plus, Bismarck's 15" guns had better ammunition than Hood.
"Who's taking pictures?" - Kriegsberichter, war time correspondents onboard the ships, taking pictures for propaganda reasons.
"That's kinda weird, aren't most ships referred to as females?" - Yes, but German naming convention was different. Bismarck was named after a historical man. Plus, I think it was Captain Lindemann who said that 'a ship this powerful can only be a 'he'. Toxic masculinity, in my Nazi warmachine?
Finally, the British didn't sink Bismarck. Crippled him, disabled him, mission-killed him ... But actually sink, no. He was scuttled by his own crew as they abandoned ship.

@@gertlowenhamn9746 hahahaha I love that analagy. You're kind of right, but not al of that was the captains fault.
Engineers warned about the rudder and no engineer would think it's a good idea to comission commision anything without fully testing it. And that would have revieled the radar problem possably in time for it to get fixed sufficiently. So if it wasn't rushed from higher up, the boiler wouldn't likely have been a fatal flaw, and it might not have been arrogance but instead a statement in breaking with neval tradition.
Achilles Peleus son also had his fatal flaw, but it didn't make him less badass.
But when one of my female friends does something absolutely brutal I won't start calling her 'he', I like my boiler. XD

The Bismarck was not even close to being the "biggest battleship ever built". The American Iowa class(4 ships) had more and bigger guns, was almost 100 feet longer and weight almost 10,000 tons more.
And of course the Yamato class(2 ships) of the Japanese navy had the biggest guns of any battleship and weighed the most by far of any battleship, which is the figure generally used to claim the title of the biggest ship. When the Bismarck was commissioned it was the biggest battleship, but only held that title for about a year and a half.

Too many mistakes already. Bismarck was the biggest Battleship ever built by Germany but she was not the biggest ever built. The American Iowa Class BB's were bigger as was The Japanese Yamato and Musashi. Italy's Vittorio Veneto Class was the same size. HMS Hood Which was a Battle Cruiser was longer than Bismarck, Displaced the same weight and had the same size caliber guns. Hood was Old when she engaged Bismarck and her Armor was not up to par. The Main Ship responsible for most of the Damage done to Bismarck in the Final Battle was HMS Rodney. An Older Battleship which had bigger guns than Bismarck at 16 inch.

In fairness the Yamato and Iowa-classes were built *after* the Bismarck was. They were bigger, yes, but at the time of construction, Bismarck held that title.

Sorry but I can't give the video a thumbs up. From my point of view, the woman is disrespectful towards history. +/- 4000 sailors died on the Hood and on the Bismark. She should show some respect to these dead.
Not everything should be made with silly jokes for entertainment reasons.
