If you crave sugar and sweets, it’s not that you’re broken, Dr. Ben says. You may have a flavor of COMT or MAO that influences neurotransmitter breakdown and metabolism.
I think this knowledge is super helpful when it comes to personalizing a diet and exercise program that will work for you in the long term.
Dr. Lynch and I also dive into the methylation cycle and how it is involved in the
synthesis of many key molecules needed to burn fat for fuel

He’s got a great new book out, called Dirty Genes-I posted a quick summary of that, here: highintensityhealth.com/2017
    Key Takeaways:
05:21 Methylation occurs in every cell all over the body. In the brain it makes neurotransmitters.
06:23 Carnitine is required during intermittent fasting, ketosis and general fat consumption.
07:39 One sign that you are not methylating well would be an active startle reflex.
09:24 Methylation’s primary job is to turn off genes. It does turn some on.
10:17 Most methyl groups are found in protein. The cobalamins produced by gut bacteria is used only by our gut bacteria.
    13:40 Stop taking folic acid.
21:24 Methylation plays a minor but significant role in detoxification.
23:49 Foods to support detoxification include cruciferous vegetables, eggs, and broccoli and radish sprouts eaten together.
27:05 If you are having high reactive nitrogen species or high reactive oxygen species, your attempts at keto will fail.
29:04 If NQO1 is not functioning well, CoQ10, vitamin C, glutathione and vitamin E supplements may do harm.
29:46 High dopamine quinone levels are found in those of us with dementia, neurological disorders, and Parkinson’s. The vitamin needed to run NQO1 is riboflavin.
32:00 Estrogen quinones lead to estrogen sensitive cancers.
32:26 Excessive levels of dopamine in your brain will lead to more norepinephrine and epinephrine.
40:30 If you have a faster COMT, eat more protein and perhaps supplement with more tyrosine.
42:00 Fast COMT/inattentive folks fidget and move to stimulate their brains to make dopamine.
43:37 Slower COMT is associated with PMS, estrogen based cancers, insomnia and higher blood pressures.
50:15 A fast MAOA depletes your serotonin levels and burns through your tryptophan.
56:34 You don’t have to be on a ketogenic diet to burn fat.
01:00:03 Excessive exercise and overtraining causes inflammation, which causes increased blood sugar, which kicks you out of ketosis.
01:03:40 The other Super Seven Genes
    01:05:28 Check your arsenic levels.
01:06:20 Stop thinking disease and focus on function.
01:09:35 Every action you take cleans your genes or dirties your genes.
01:10:45 Dr. Lynch’s morning routine is one of personal growth and deep work.
01:16:00 Dr. Lynch’s desert island nutrient is liposomal glutathione.
01:17:05 Dr. Lynch’s elevator pitch: The cure for all conditions is preventing it.

I just want to say THANK YOU, because I think I finally figure out why I was super tired and depressed, and why I couldn't tolerate keto or intermittent fasting for more than 2 days, even when I'm fat adapted, and why I was always anxious and having sleep problems. I was taking high doses of folic acid (naively thinking it was neuroprotective) and my symptoms just got worse. I cannot afford a gene test but this week I decided to through away the folic acid and just eat lots of greens (mainly spinach) and beef liver. I also took a prolonged cold exposure (which makes your body use norepinephrine, depleting dopamine I guess) and the next day boom, I felt like a phoenix reborn, just awesome, and happy and euphoric. I want to say thank you again because it was VERY difficult to solve this problem (like 10 years difficult to solve it), even with positive thinking, sun exposure, exercise, HFLC diet, time restricting feeding, and omega 3 supplementation. I just love you guys, I feel you may have just save me. Please keep this great work you are doing. Cheers!

INTERESTING how he stopped keto after only 6 days seems like he just hit a wall and gave up... i thought everyone was supposed hit the wall (keto flu) before they adapt...sometimes i think it takes longer for some people to adapt but sticking to it seems to give the body no choice but to adjust...i thought having carb cravings and low energy was all apart of the process until you adapt... 6 days seems like a very short period of time to make that adjustment it took me at least 2 full weeks before i reached adaptation....if he stuck with it for 2 months and still had carbs cravings and no energy then it would be a different story...but 6 days ??? thats not even a full week

Mike, Amazing as usual. All these Ben Lynch interviews are huge. One mystery I've encountered during keto is that for some reason, I've developed a high BP and palps when eating Avocados. Never had issues with them before, but I tried to get them in daily to get that key level of Potassium up. Avocados also happen to have a lot of Folate in them. I think 1 whole Avocado has something like 200mcg. So I remove them, the heart palps go away and I'm beautiful. Like Ben, I'm a COMT +/+ (slow). I'm also a CBS +/+ so Folate has always been wierd for me. I've had a lot of similar stress that Ben describes (e.g. Green Tea) when trying to take a folate supplement (not folic acid). Seam to be making great gains overall on keto although at night my BP will go up slightly and make it harder to fall asleep. I have to pretty much do an Epsom Salt bath every night before bed and take 5-HTP. Otherwise, once I"m asleep, it's better quality than I have ever experienced on previous lifestyle. Always tweaking and learning. Keep the tips coming!

Guys,, a lot of theory here. My one suggestion is to remember your audience, and that to juggle all the inputs here and other shows would keep someone continually in their head about when and how to eat...
The comment about needing greens for enabling fats in Keto seems also a little theoretical. Try telling that to the many true meat and egg only carnivores who for years haven't even looked at anything green. I wonder if in Dr. Ben has ever experienced true keto adaption for any length of time to make such comments.
I will say he looks the picture of health and presents well with great listening skills and focus of delivery.

    • @DrBenLynch
      @DrBenLynch Před 6 lety +8

van phillips I have not experienced true keto no. Folate is needed for many processes in the body not just fuel metabolism. Blood cells, cell repair, DNA bases, neurotransmitters etc. Protein can provide sarcosine which feeds into the folate pathway. Issue is if folks have SNPs in these pathways, they can get into trouble. Some high protein folks can get away with very low folate from veggies but I doubt it’s very many. Must evaluate homocysteine MCH MCV and FIGLU.

I don't disagree with Dr. Ben. Additional to his advice though I would ask you to research the effect of morning sunlight on your ability to lose weight and be healthier on a fat-adapted diet. finally a smart doctor who wrote a smart book. Except for the dietary part of his book, which truthfully, many people who are led to buy his book have probably already changed their diet; which didn't work, so I found that part of the book to be redundant. However, I wish he would have went into more detail on how much of each supplement to take. A good interview, but would have been better if you broke it down into sections, as it is just too long.

Dr Ben Lynch Hi Doc, thanks for the question. The airflow with this product has been demonstrated to be superior to standard Carpet. I would use a Carpet and Rug Institute (seriously, there is such a thing) recommended vacuum with a HEPA filter. Other than that I would do a professional hot water extraction per the manufacture recommendations. I could make the argument that this might be a better option than a Hardsurface product. Thing about Hardsurface is they don’t trap anything, particles just circulate around the house until their captured by an air filter. This product would act as an air filter till you come along with your HEPA vac and extract them.

Do you know if the the liver adapts to how much it produces based on how much creatine you get in your diet? Are there studies on this that you know of? Thanks.

Listening to this video and I was wondering if either of you have ever linked COMT (low or high) with blood type. With my studies and experimenting with family and friend's generic testing, I noticed a direct correlation between COMT (low) as type A blood, and COMT (high) as type O. Type B can be either but leans more toward the low side. Curious if you know the science behind that and can maybe send me in the right direction to learn more.

I am so glad I found this video! My family and I are looking closely at our genetics and trying desperately to avoid Alzheimer's Disease that runs on my mother's side of the family. My mother is in the last stage - stage 7. After uploading all of our autosomal DNA to promethease.com and comparing it to our mother's and aunt's DNA, my brother feels pretty certain that methylation disruption is one of the contributing factors in what caused her (and our grandfather) to develop the disease (obviously there are more causes than just one). None of us have the ApoE4 alleles. We have devoured Dr. Dale Bredesen's book "The End of Alzheimer's" and now we have found you! I just purchased Dr. Lynch's book, and plan to upload my DNA to his website. We also suffer from hypothyroidism which I understand involves tyrosine, another piece of the methylation cycle. Any suggestions for more literature or sources are welcome! Thank you for this video, I am so grateful to have found it. I have a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry, so I have a basic understanding and this was easy for me to follow. Thanks again!!!

Thank you Mike, Dr. Lynch? Does dirty NOS3 occur in hypothyroid/hashi and raynauld's (phenomena, syndrome, disease), and also does NOS3 function decrease when when one is fasting (always hearing about how people's hands and feet and entire body for that matter, are so cold during a fast and can this have long term implications). Where would one start their personal investigation to restoring NOS3 function, preferably without going down the genetic testing road? It would be intriguing to see if other peripheral symptoms decrease with correcting NOS3. I do have a clean diet LCHF, IF, liver support etc and on and on. Is there one path that would make sense more than others, so as not to create more problems. Curious, how did you, Dr.Lynch un-dirty you NOS3, what was your path, even though this may not be someone else's ideal path it might provide some insight? Many thanks:)

This is one of my favorite podcasts on this channel (although Dr. Gomiak is still my all-time favorite) and I just finished pre-ordering his book from Audible. If I wanted to find my own practitioner it would be someone like Dr. Lynch as you know that he could work through the various nuances that would help increase the probability of an effective and healthful end result.
I had to laugh when he had an argument with himself concerning whether his wife is flighty or not in relation to the COMT discussion. Perhaps in the future he might think about using two better set of descriptors for high versus how COMT states other than "deep thinker" versus "social and flighty". At a minimum these considerations would be better phrased as being tendencies only, but perhaps referring to them as tendencies toward introversion or extroversion would be better received by more people while still containing the information that Dr. Lynch is ultimately trying to convey.
The only comment I have on the interview was that even a 2 or 3 hour video still wouldn't have been enough. I really hope that you'll have him back for a future discussion on some topic fairly soon. Congrats to you both....

Andy Spark the Dr doesn't necessarily advocate 1 diet in terms of macros. Instead he collates research to use food as medicine. In fact one of his research pieces was on keto and he found that a plant based keto was very healthy. Basically, if you look at the work and the results of millions of research studies, a whole food, plant based diet (rich in healthy fats), protein and leafy green veg and one that has no processed/refined foods is the best for optimal health. There are a lot of parallels between Dr Greger and this channel.
