I can imagine a lot of players' hearts sank when they saw Arantxa in their draw. She was beatable, but it'd take an absolutely monumental effort, especially on clay. Steffi said it was "like trying to take down a bull". So sad to see what happened in Arantxa's life after tennis. Like so many players of that era, there's been a lof of heartache.
Great match. This and the Montreal final showcased Arantxa’s fighting spirit. Then she defeated Steffi again in 3 sets to win the US Open. 94 was ASV’s best year.
Arantxa hanging tough with Steffi and getting the win . There were very few capable of lasting a 3 hour match with Grafs power and superb athleticism . Most players packing their bags after an hour and heading for the locker room. Haha
Arantxa would have rather died than give up on a match, a set, a game or even a point! I don't know of anyone since who has had as much of a fighting spirit as her.
Only Sabatini (11) and Navratilova (9) were able to beat Steffi more often than Sanchez (8). It has to be noted, though, that Navratilova beat Steffi 5 times in 1985/86, which is before Steffi had made even her first slam final. Sanchez beat Steffi in 4 slam matches. Only Navratilova managed more with 5 slam match wins (although 2 of them were in 1985/86). Sanchez is the only player to beat Steffi on a slow AND on a fast slam surface. And that both even twice (FO 89 & 91; USO 92 & 94)!

Steffi was good athlet but not a great player, in absent of Monica and dearth of good players, she win lots of grand slams.
Ummmm yeah ok. 🙄. You don’t accomplish what she did by only being a good athlete.
