  • My first Air New Zealand business class flight and the verdict was mixed. The crew and service were sensational, the entertainment system was really cool and the seats comfortable. But the cabin layout? No thanks.
    On this Air NZ business class flight review I cover every aspect of my flight from Auckland to Adelaide on the beautiful 787. This includes the premium checkin and business class lounge at Auckland Airport, the boarding, take off, cabin layout (why did they go with this??), the seat and the amazing Air New Zealand crew.
    For more flight reviews please check out my channel or the links at the bottom of this description.

    The product really isn't as bad as all the comments below are assuming. It was a licensed design from Virgin Atlantic - the same as their upper class. When it was released it was one of the few products that gave every business class passenger direct aisle access.
    It is now out of date in terms of being one of the last inward facing herringbone designs - but I'd argue the seat is as comfortable as any (you are even allowed take off in a reclined position with your feet up on the ottoman because of the design) and the foot area is no smaller than the narrow gaps on most of the new reverse herringbone, and twin/throne designs. It is also designed so couples can eat together - the table is wide and the footstool doubles as a seat (with seatbelt) for your travel companion to dine with you.
    Dennis' experience was on a short hall flight. I would argue the Air NZ J product comes into its own on the very long haul flights which mostly leave out of Auckland late at night.
    Business class Trans Pacific, Trans Atlantic (from LAX) and up to Asia are all provided with an additional mattress and two of the fullest pillows you will get on any airline. Furthermore, the food and beverage product steps up several notches also, and as Dennis says - an Amenity kit is provided. Wifi is being rolled out on those services, and the flight crews from Auckland-Los Angeles (NZ based) and London-Los Angeles (UK Based) are probably the friendliest and most professional you will find.
    I cant wait to see what they do next - Air NZ has never been scared to try different things - the premium economy space seat (now discontinued) was a favourite amongst many, and the sky-couch (now being rolled out on some other asian airlines) was designed by them. So I have no doubt their new J will be really really good. Incidentally - their premium economy service is probably the very best out there.
    So while Air NZ's business cabin is quirky - don't rule it out for long haul flights - this airline prides itself on making passengers comfortable. As for the comment expressing surprise about the company not being bankrupt - go look at their load factors, particularly to and from North America - you'll find the Americans and Brits love flying them (and the fares ain't cheap!!)

      Good well thought out reply to balance out some of the extreme comments here. Ive never had a problem looking out the window taking off /landing. I just hate looking at other peoples feet! The bed is VERY comfy as you say. Still it is gonna be replaced so the murmuring masses can just settle.

      We flew recently on Virgin from the UK to St Lucia. We looked at both Upper Class & Premium Economy, but didn't like the 'herring bone ' layout in Upper Class, as it seemed rather narrow. Premium Economy, on the other hand offered 38" legroom & 22" wide seats. No contest we thought. However, what's the point of wanting to look out the window on a long haul flight? There's simply nothing to see! Even on take - off & landing, there's not a lot to see, unless the weather is good & you're going somewhere interesting. I speak as a retired Airline Captain. Enjoy the comfort & service - the view is usually just the same- one airport looks like another!

      Why not, the cockpit of the Airbus 200 ( Bombardier CS ) was designed by two pilots. One from Boeing the other from Airbus. Similarly passenger feedback should be taken to design the seats. Lets see, Heavy cushioned seats, loads of electronics ( hidden ) lots of leg room, 1-2-1 seat config, privacy, HIgh end entertainment systems, the ability to plug and play your own devices, an oversized amenity kit. Food that can be pre-ordered from you favourite restaurant. I can go on and on but really seat comfort is the most important of them all.

Hopefully, Air New Zealand will fix this HUGE MISTAKE. 👍🏻👍🏻 to Air New Zealand for adding Chicago to their route map. Once the seat MISTAKE is fixed, I’ll book them for my trip to NZ.

      @RN-DNP Před 6 lety +12

      Rob Youngquist: the real reason behind choosing the herringbone seat design was for profit. Forward-facing seats take up too much cabin real estate. So it was ANZ's bottom line and greed that won the day. Hopefully, they'll be smarter with the new design this time around.

    Once again Dennis another informative video thank you. It just amazes me that Air New Zealand opted for this configuration for their 787 aircraft. Many years ago I flew from HKG to LHR with virgin in Upper Class on their A340 aircraft. the window was behind me and lying down everybody was facing the aisle which I thought was very strange. I even remember BA new Club World cabin which they still use which was incredible at the time sadly they have not moved on and its now the most dated cabin in the world.

Much better than just showing without discussing, and so much better than those who say everything is good no matter what. What’s up with that? Are they looking to get favors from airlines, and so don’t want to ever criticize an airline that might help them?

You can book long haul flights in business from $2000 one way. Compare that to Qantas, Etihad, Emirates, Virgin etc. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

    I've flown Air NZ business a few times in the 777. The seat configuration looks strange but once you get up in the air and settle in doing work or relaxing you really don't notice anyone else and it's just blue sky or darkness outside. The seat/bed is comfortable, the food is good and the crew fantastic. It would be nice to look out the window landing or taking off but for a 12 hour flight that's only about 5% of the time. 50%+ is sleeping so that's more important I think.
    Having said that it's my bet that the new business product being developed in a 'secret' hangar will be a more conventional setup. Wifi is also being gradually introduced across the fleet.

  • @zoltan902
    @zoltan902 Před 6 lety +1

    Dennis, this has the be one of the absolute best flight reviews you've ever posted, because (similar to your BA review) you manage to articulate an honest, negative opinion, yet, you have the knowledge and credibility to support that opinion. Dan Goz (Nonstop Dan) did a review of an identically configured business-class (Virgin, I think) product some time back, and he reported having no problems with the cabin's horrible design. I agree with everything you said about this. It's absurd that such a seating configuration would be commercially let alone physically desirable.
    The catering looks fantastic though, especially the chocolate covered profiterole.
    I also think the butterfly diagram in the bathroom is a stupid (if not horribly ugly) feature, as it either repulses people using the toilet, or it compels them to stay in there to study the damned thing when there's a queue outside waiting to use the facilities.
    Thank you as always - most flight 'reviewers' on CZcams just treat their videos as self-glorification, and are usually compelled to give positive vibes because they're enjoying themselves to much to bother to be informative. You on the other hand, are never distracted, and you have the utmost respect for your viewers expectations to be informed. You are one of my absolute favourite CZcams channels, and I constantly look forward to your next upload. Keep it up!!!

    Great video, very interesting. I flew the Air New Zealand 777 with the same basic seat from Buenos Aires to Brisbane and was actually a fan of the seat. I couldn’t sleep on my side with the IFE extended, and facing into the aisle meant my feet occasionally got bumped by people walking up and down, but apart from that I feel very private and relaxed (much moreso than Lufthansa for instance). I also found it super easy to film in, by suction cupping the GoPro to the IFE screen. Interesting to see other people’s perspectives. Cheers 😊

    Sky Couch also needs some rethinking. It's a good idea on paper, but idk how to improve it in reality. When the row in front leans back you lose a lot of room, they don't show that part on their ads. Saw people just squirming around trying to find a comfortable position.
    Friends flew back on skycouch and said they would save their money in the future or go for premium economy.
    Premium economy looks to have the best bang for buck of you want to be comfortable.
    Their crew is great however! All our flights they were so nice. All smiles, no attitude, clearly enjoy their jobs and take interest in having a conversation when they aren't busy.
    The 787 was so smooth, the wings are beautiful, flew at 40,000ft at 695 mph ground speed. Made it from Auckland to Chicago in 12 hours!
    Also New Zealand is beautiful!

    You forgot to mention, how Air New Zealand has a amazing food ordering system, you can order food/drinks, duty free, other gifts through the entertainment system, also leave message the crew as well. So you don't have to call a flight attendant, or disturb other paxs etc.

      danyal gurmani .Indeed! Along with the skycouch, the space seat in PE and the other innovations such as RFID bracelets for unaccompanied minors that allow a parent to track their child's whereabouts at all times; its a wonder that air nz did not innovate J class when they go their new 789s. Still they are in the pricsss now so lets wait and see. Afterall a new product typically has a 10-15 year life.

    I have just done the Air NZ business class San Fransisco to Brisbane via Auckland, and I agree about the seating arrangement it made for a very uncomfortable sleeping experience [ it was a 13 hour flight ] due to the small foot area and every time someone walked up the isle my feet were knocked. The toilets I thought were also very small and lacked any of the nice amenities other airlines provide. Staff were fantastic but this did not make up for the uncomfortable seating. I will stay with the other airlines next time.

    Flew ANZ business class from Auckland to Houston recently
    I have to say the configuration and screen setup is really dated. But we enjoyed the food and due to have seats right near the galley, neither us nor our kids had to stare at people's heads the whole trip
    The one really good thing about the trip was the Auckland lounge. Their business class lounge is AWESOME. It's really big, plenty of space with comfortable chairs everywhere. Also the lounge has a great buffet with snacks and fresh fruit. But the best part is the coffee bar. You walk up, type exactly what you want on the tablet, and then it's in your hand from the barista in like 2 minutes
    Overall, the flight was fine. It was still immensely more comfortable than economy for the 13 hour trip

    Cathay Pacific once used a similar business class layout, but decided to opt-out soon after they were released due to the poor feedback. The current reverse herringbone is a much better product. If other airlines have studied this case, they might have avoided this layout (eg. NZ and VS). Anyways nice review as you pointed out the problems of this layout!

    Yip the seats go the wrong way. It must have seemed a good idea 10 years ago when Air NZ introduced them, and is better than a straight foward configuration for longhaul. Now as we know it is a little strange. But my guess they will turn them around on the new ones to face out to the Windows. But in my experience the Air NZ crew are awesome and have more than made up for any issues

    Air NZ Business Premier product is dubbed 'coffin class' by regular premium passengers and I agree with you, it is now outdated. To me, Business Premier is Premium Economy with a lay flat bed. When Air NZ introduced the product in 2004 when the airline took delivery of the B772's is was a cool product. The reason it has lasted this long, is something to do with Air NZ licensing agreement from Virgin Atlantic to use the design. By the way, 'coffin class' will used on the Auckland t Chicago route, as the new Business Premier seat design will not be ready by the time service will start.

    A great review. The Auckland lounge is ALWAYS crowded in the morning. The seating arrangement is definitely sub-par. On the B777 at least if you’re lying fully flat then there’s no suitably positioned reading light, about as annoying as having your feet constantly knocked by people moving down the aisle. Doubtless though they’ll come up with a good new cabin arrangement.

    I only fly air new Zealand business both short and long haul, the cabin crew are amazing, the food is incredible, I usually get the 737-800 which is wider and has more room, and has a different configuration. I find there’s heaps of room and can’t fault them on anything. All their lounges are great and when using partner loungers they treat you very well. Side note I don’t fly qantas after the last debacle that wasn’t my fault, there was a no fault debacle on Air New Zealand and they just sorted everything all to my convince. They can never do enough to help out.

  • @Wazzap54
    @Wazzap54 Před 6 lety +1

    I have a loyalty to Air NZ - however their Business Class is lacking in a few areas. You need to have a crew member to assist to unfold your mattress to make up your bed - lots of plastic packaging. If you need to sit up again after a few hours, you really need the crew again to dismantle the bed. Other airlines (Eg Singapore/ Swiss) you can lie flat at the push of a button without disturbing the crew. Air NZ also has a person who morphs from Cabin Crew to Chef by putting on a black chefs top. A little over the top when your choice is eggs - poached or scrambled. Air NZs biggest asset is its staff. Have to say that value for money - their Premium Economy is better value.

    Dennis - we just flew this configuration. For passengers who have flown their 777 seats, these are NOT the same - they are smaller and narrower and thus, less comfy. One larger customer had to downgrade to Premium Economy because of this. He was fine in the 777 last year (we saw him then as well). Can't wait for the new seats.

  • @arnijames1
    @arnijames1 Před 5 lety

    I've travelled Brisbane to Auckland and LA to Auckland a couple of years back on a 777-300 where the seats in Premium (a 2x3x2 config from memory) were angled toward the window as were the seats in the middle. Those were a bit odd as well and terrible for sleeping. No footrests, instead a bean bag (seriously?!) and no recline. Instead the seat insert slid downward (but not to form a full bed or anything), and not very easily either, the cabin crew fella had to use a bit of force. I even tried sleeping on the floor (for the LA flight) as there was no one next to me but decided against it after a few minutes. I don't know if they still have these, and they probably shouldn't (I recollect reviews saying they were terrible), but otherwise Air NZ service as always impeccable.

    I kinda always wondered what you did for a living. TBH I thought maybe you were involved in the mining industry in Aus' which would've accounted for WW travel and in BC or F a lot of the time. After seeing a little item in this video I went off and found your families travel company.
    Looks an amazing organisation and makes me wanna be an Aussie. I LOVE the whole ethos behind it and it's a lesson many a tour operator could take note of. I then went off and watched a Q&A video of yours which spread more light. It's always nice to know a bit about the person behind the content creators you love.
    For this video I have to agree that the cabin does not look nice. The hard product itself looks pretty good but it's configuration is bloody horrible ( and Im a BA regular so I know about crappy & outdated BC seats!). Overall I'd have to agree that it's a case of 'thank god for a great cabin crew' because along with the 'one foot well' the product seems to be lacking quite a bit. GREAT CONTENT as ever.
    RE: Historical Talks. The BBC undertook a massive programme of gathering stories from 'the dying generation' of WWII people from all around the world but it wasn't just service men and women it was also about the wives, kids etc and im pretty sure it's available in at least podcast version via the world service. They did a ton which had personnel and families from ( old world / non pc term) the old colonies as well as Brits so you may even find that some relation of yours took part without you even knowing. They are truly fascinating to watch/ listen to and understand how people from around the world in different classes of life viewed world events back then.
