- EURO 2004 - Greece win Euro 2004
efore UEFA EURO 2004 kicked off, the normal talk was of which superstar and their team would come out on top in the battle for the European title. In the end, a totally unsung group of players were to triumph in one of European football's greatest surprises.
Greece went into the competition as rank outsiders. However, few people had taken notice of their increasingly impressive qualifying campaign, in which they lost their first two matches, but won the next six, conceding no goals in that excellent run.
In what was a splendid month-long festival of football in the Portuguese sun, the Greeks, a solid, pragmatic side which played to their strengths, confounded one team after another, and fully deserved their title in the end. They were coached by Otto Rehhagel, a veteran German who had massive club experience, in particular with Werder Bremen and FC Bayern München in his native country.
The shrewd Rehhagel succeeded in knitting together his squad and coaxing them into an iron discipline that initially frustrated and eventually broke every opponent. In the opening match in Porto, they shocked the fervent home support by beating the Portuguese hosts 2-1.
In the quarter-finals, the holders France were unable to cope with Greece's determination and crashed to defeat. The semi-finals saw the Czech Republic, many people's competition favourites after some fine early displays, eliminated by an extra-time Greek silver goal, key man Pavel Nedvěd having departed injured in the first half.
The final itself in Lisbon was a tightly fought affair. Portugal, coached by Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, had battled back from that opening-day shock, and were desperate to give their fans a memorable climax. But the Greeks had other ideas.
As in previous matches, a no-nonsense defence marshalled by the tough central defender Traianos Dellas, a combative midfield led by eventual player of the tournament Theodoris Zagorakis, and an opportunist striker in the shape of Angelos Charisteas broke Portugal's hearts. A single Charisteas header from a corner near the hour-mark gave Greece a triumph that was beyond their wildest dreams.
For some of the continents biggest stars the tournament was clouded with disappointment. Zinédene Zidane and France, despite a dramatic group-match comeback to beat England, never regained past heights. England and David Beckham promised much, fired by brilliant teenage striker Wayne Rooney, but fell to Portugal in a dramatic quarter-final penalty shoot-out.
Spain failed to get out of second gear, and the much-fancied Dutch came unstuck against Portugal in the semi-final. Ultimately, it was a team without recognisable stars that conquered Europe. Greece's stunning success provided an example to the rest of the continent: with hard work, belief, the necessary good fortune, and unbending team spirit, anything is possible.

@@neuro.weaver dont get upset he just said something stupid. But you gotta admit Greece was the founder of nearly everything in the modern and ancient world. And the credit we get isn't enough. Europe treats us like their rubbish bin while we should all be equal

UNDERDOGS can be called all Hellenic History and Civilization!
Always less in number and power when fighting enemies like Persians, Turks or others and always able to achieve things!!
Congrats Hellenes!!! ;)
Thx bud. As a Greek I really appreciate that :) 🇬🇷
I remember watching this on holiday when I was only 9 years old. Even though I’m English I was cheering on Greece and was happy for them when they won!
I hope England win the UEFA Euro 2020. It's time for the 3 lions to be great again.
@@makisr31362021*
Thank You
@@makisr3136 Lol they are Trash right now
Yeah so? This actually proves how great their achievement of getting the trophy is!
After the final, it was the only time in my life that I went out in the streets and celebrated with EVERY other person!... We were huging, dancing and cheering with each other like we were family... What a day it was!...
ειμουν πιτσιρικας τοτε θυμαμε ειχαμε μαζευτει ολοι στο λευκο πυργο
I wish I could say the same for England I`m 50 now and still waiting for a final let alone a victory in one and I would have loved to have been over in Greece to savour it but I honestly never ever believed you would win it I would so have loved to soak up the atmosphere as was hoping this gets to you in good health
"the only thing you can do is show courage"
FWIW what he says is more accurately translated as "show insolence"
I remember when Greece won the Euro, thinking I'd die happy having experienced that in my lifetime.
@costa Thank God noone can take that beautiful day away from us.
Hoax lol
Sour grapes more like it.
@costa Sour grapes lol
Hellas Ole Ole
Quite possibly the greatest underdog story in football history... Aside from Leicester City in 2015/16 tho
The only greatest underdog story by far.
This was truly something amazing I'll never forget this
Denmark 1992
+ahmad albas Of course not.We even did manage to beat the hosts twice!
I was watching the last game that Leicester city won and when they won i remembered that we also had one of the best underdog stories of football ever.
This triumph will be proudly remembered in the years to come...
Celebrating that victory with friends and family and thousands of Greeks in the streets of central London still gives me goosebumps to this day... All the English (including the police lol) were cheering with us. Even the lorry and bus drivers were letting Greeks climb the roof to wave the flag. Thank you England for making that night extra special!
@costa You need to get laid...
Should have come North London to the home of the Greeks 😉
For some strange reason, which none of us knew, we were sure as Greeks that we would lift the cup before the tournament even started. We all sang together "lift the honored one(cup), I can't wait any longer" as if we had a history of success in the Euro Cup. What we experienced cannot be described in words, it was something beyond joy, it was the moment of Greece!
Truly amazing I remember watching this as a kid and being so proud of my Greeks.
I know me too I couldn't believe it
@costa Being euro champions you punk ass debbie downer I wasn't born in 1994 so what the fhuk does that have to do with the euro cup bum ass
@costa You must be a little Portugal fan still ass quenched you lost to a bunch of randos...embarrassing
i remember that everybody in germany said they just defended themselfes to the title but in then end people here were satisfied that at least one german won the title with Otto :)
Greece fought with what it had. Nobody (literally NOBODY) denies they were defensive, but likewise EVERYONE agrees Greece won fair and square.
This proves the most important concept that should inspire everyone who walks this world - ‘anything is possible!’
I was in sunny side high school 'summer school in fresno california im 30 yrs old now god good memories .
I love Greece
If you are not Greek you can’t imagine how much joy and happiness this trophy put on every Greek’s face.
@costa What’s the lie in this case?
@costa If your national team was the second worst in the tournament and you beat the hosts twice then you beat the defenders of the title and then you beat the favorites. You have to be doing something right defending or attacking. This is football wether you like it or not
Im greek and the 2004 euro made me so proud
Greek Gods. My beautiful country. Birthplace of western civilization
This is the best european championship for Greece
Everybody is Greek!
@costa Then you must be a Turkish or Albanian Gypsy.
@costa Wow what a comeback lmaoo typical from an 11 year old

Can't believe that Portugal (2016) pulled a Greece (2004) in France Euro 2016 lol
Must have been sweet for Ronaldo as the final defeat in 2004 really hurt him.
@Reality Analyst that's true no disrespect to Portugal I have nothing but respect for them but in 2004 the Greeks were Unstoppable man they were playing such a good strong Midfield and defense
+Reality Analyst So? What's your point?

Many Czech fans complaining and Swedes about Greece winning unfair. I remember Greece winning Euro 2004 but i can't remember seeing either Sweden or Czech Republic in the tournament.
As you see im not a football fan but i know for sure that Czech Republic suck in football and Sweden is like not that much better.
Czech Republic went all the way to the semi-final and beat teams like Holland and Germany that year. They were no easy team. They won all of their matches until they faced Greece
@costa Czech Republic suck in football. 😂 So are Greece now but still AT that time they won gold. Czech won nothing. 😂😂😂
@costa how was the referee "pro-Greek"?
@costa Yes.
@costa Nedved got injured. He went to kick the ball, but kicked the player instead and pulled his groin
It was all Greek to me. Lol
Sad they colapse
What he said!!
They failed to build with youth players that was their downfall if you saw their title defence it was poor old players😢
Fluke
Where? In snooker?
@@realityanalyst shit team that fluked a European championship boring team to watch
@@joninton6678
Said the shithead
FYI
It came home in 2004
Hate them or love them they won it with great attitude.
I remember that. Unfortunately. There is a popular saying: Euro 2004, that is when Greece won, football lost...
Football won 100%. The beauty of football is these surprises too you know. It is good for the sport to have these moments too, when small teams or countries achieve something so special. For this reason Euro 2004 will always be remembered.
@@Reddragon-hn6ot It is nice as a story or as a headliner but not so much for the sensation of watching and way of thinking about the sport... and generally for the sense of justice. It is not a good commercial for any sport to see that if you don't perform good, if you play in a not eye-pleasing way and bore viewers, you can still get away with it... You know what I mean? Which match will the people remember and speak about - Greece 1:0 victory (be it final or whatever) or a fabulous breath-taking game Czechia-Netherands 3:2? If you now ask football fans about Euro 2004, they will probably tell you they remember 2 things: Greece won, Czech republic - Netherlands was a spectacular match. This is what it should be about.
@@dejffjed
If you are a football fan, then you must know that this sport isn't justice. So that means that not only the best players in the world must lift the trophies. In the other hand, Greece beats the former Euro and world Cup winners-France- the Chechzs and two times the Portugal in their own home. If this is not justice, then what else?
@@ioannisbeizanis5379 Ugly football hard to watch that no one will remember. That's what it is.
@@dejffjed
Hellas won 0-1 at Spain in the qualifying round and finished 1st in the group. Spain went in Euro 2004 from the playoffs.
Then Hellas won 2 times the host team Portugal, sent home Spain for the second time, won EASILY the best team in the world France, won the best team of the tournament so far Czech Rep. None of the above was on the penalties shootout!!!!
If that's ugly football, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
