Some games are sacred. They were either so well received or so revolutionary that any criticism towards the game is sacrilege. They’re the games that people claim haven’t aged, the games people say are still the best to this day. Sometimes when I play a game like that, I think “what the hell are they on about?”. I’ll likely find things to enjoy, but I’ll be sceptical that it’s the best. Spider-Man 2, is one of those sacred cows. People for years, up until the release of Insomniac's Spider-Man games, have claimed that Spider-Man 2 for the 6th generation of consoles is the best open world Spider-Man game to ever exist. And you know what? Yea, I get it. I played the game when I was a kid but it wasn’t until last year that I gave it a proper replay, and I was expecting to see a game that aged poorly, that played poorly, and I didn’t. Look; is this better than some of the latest Spider-Man games, not entirely. Is it my favourite Spider-Man game; Sorry, but no ones beating Ultimate. But if anyone were to tell me that this is the best Spider-Man game, I wouldn’t question them. After, brace yourselves, 20 years, looking at this game can teach us a lot of lessons. Outside of how revolutionary it was; the game still does some things better than even the latest Spider-Man games, and that alone warrants a deeper look at Spider-Man 2.
Now I need to make something clear; I'm a big Spider-Man guy, ok, and those biases are clear no matter where you look on the channel; but despite being the #1 Peter Parker Pickled Pepper Pecker glazer, I have no nostalgia for THIS game. I grew up playing a lot of these games, but this one never stuck as hard as Ultimate did. By the time I was old enough to really appreciate the game though; I didn’t have a console capable of playing it. Now, going back to it, I was expecting something a lot worse than what we have. I became sceptical when seeing that people were comparing Spider-Man 2018 to this game, but, and sorry to give it away so early, these people are right to do so. The swinging genuinely is really good, the combat is surprisingly deep, and the game itself is just plain fun. It’s not all perfect, but if the goal is to answer the question “is this game as good as they say” the answer is “yea, pretty much”.
Spider-Man 2 is a wildly successful movie, but Spider Man 2 specifically Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 or Spider-Man 2 for the Gamecube is a wildly successful game. The Spider-Man 2 game based off the Sam Raimi movie, not Insomniacs Spider-Man 2, is bassed off of the Sam Raimi movie. The Spider-Man 2 gameplay, story, and more will be covered in this Spider-Man 2 critique. This Spider-Man 2 review will be shorter, but this Spider-Man 2 analysis is comprehensive as far as my thoughts go. Spider-Man 2, 20 Years Later and yes, I mean the good one (just kidding), holds up extremely well. The old Spider-Man 2 isn't the most high tech game, and not the longest, evidenced by any Spider-Man 2 walkthrough, but it still contains mechanics that make it worth playing outside of Marvels Spider-Man 2. In regards to the ragdolls, there's a glitch where, if you activate a race challenge, turn on spider reflexes, and get hit by the train, you will soar across the entire map. It's one of the funniest glitches in video game history. Slyfincleton has a vide of it on his channel showing how to do it.
A similar glitch happened to me when I was fighting Rhino. Turn on spider reflexes dodge his attack while swinging and counter him while you dodge everything including Spider-Man goes slow motion and after you hit him you’ll go high in the sky. If you go high enough you’ll fail the mission. One of the best glitches I’ve seen.

OMG THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one that would get peeved when someone would say that Arkham Asylum to inspiration from this game for its combat system. They are completely different.
I played Death Stranding a couple of years ago for the first time, and whenever I get asked to deliver some pizza pies across a deserted landscape, I always play the pizza delivery music from this game. That's how iconic the Spider-Man 2 video game is to me.

I think for me Insomniac nailed the swinging when they added the swing assist feature. Putting that down to zero really gave the best of both the first game and the old Spider-Man 2. It feels realistic and challenging while also looking good. I went the whole game using it and I still make slight errors with it light getting too greedy and swinging too late and hitting the ground or I end up swinging into a building, slowing me down.

Ngl as fun as races can be I kinda just see them as mindless additional content for open world games and while I do think they give a good opportunity to really test the movement capabilities of characters and explore parts of the map I'd be lying if I said I missed them and want games to have more of them.
If they're just fully optional activities for people to do solely for fun and not completion then cool, but otherwise I feel the same rush can be gained from something like community made races following certain routes.

This game took over my life
When I played this as a kid I always ran in front of the train just for the ragdoll physics.
Plus I tried to perfectly land from the Empire State Building in a way that Peter fell with ragdoll physics.
Needed him to hit one ledge while not landing properly it was the best.

Regarding the Web-swinging of Insomniac's SM2, am I the only who thinks that sometimes the physics of the games just suddenly and randomly slows you down. An example is when youre using the wind tunnels. When your going at a crazy fast speed and enter the wind tunnels, you'll slow down or sometimes when you do point launches, you also suddenly lost momentum. I think that the game is also favors in giving you upward momentum compared to giving you forward momentum. Even when doing a dive bomb, the physics is more willing to give you more upward momentum compared to forward momentum

Game was my therapy after a long day of being bullied. Nothing was more satisfying than beating the crap out of thugs! I’ll always remember this game as a treasured possession that got me through the tough times!
Just like with Rainbow Six Siege this is a game I still constantly comeback to, one for nostalgia. And two because I still think the swinging is so much fun

This was my favorite game when I was a kid... now once i get to the final mission I just quit and call it because the difficulty of turning off that damn machine makes me want to punch the nearest person. I don't want games to be that difficult as an adult. I wanna relax after work not get an aneurysm from getting so pissed off at the difficulty of doing a task that for some reason I had no issue doing as a child.

Okay no joke I don’t know if this is CZcams’s compression on videos but whenever I see Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 gameplay I literally lose sight of where Spidey is when he’s swinging really fast. Idk if this is just me or CZcams or the actual game.
Have you tried the swinging with the swing assist options turned off. It’s a lot more fun if you liked the swinging of the 2004 game. Still not exactly the same since with the 2004 game you could sling shot your self and do other tricks because of how good the physics was.
Although the new game with swing assist set to 0 is not bad. At first I was smashing myself into the pavement because its harder to get off the ground.
It's not a matter of turning off swing assist. The swinging gets boring in SM2 2023. Especially since the swing button is the same button as running on a while. Doesn't take as much skill

The best Spider-Man game
Almost every Spider-Man game can be considered good except SM3, Edge of Time and TASM 1/2.
Neversoft PS1 Spider-Man games, SM1 Treyarch, SM2, Ultimate, Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, even TASM 1 was somewhat okay.

I liked all of them except Edge of Time lol. It felt too repetitive to me. Go from one room beat people up and go into another.
@@T2Focused I played it on the 3DS, it had a good story but it was 4 hours long, very repetitive and quite annoying by the end. It would’ve been better as a movie.

@@T2Focused I think that the game is a better experience watched online as a game movie with all cutscenes because the combat is a bit tedious. I actually quite liked The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the time, even though it was quite mediocre. It had fun swinging and combat, decent suits and decent stealth missions.

City I would agree since Spider-Man 2 was the first superhero game to nail an open world setting. There have been games that attempted open settings before like the Batman and Robin tie-in but it's so clearly ruined by the limitations of the PS1

I have to be honest, I prefer the combat and swinging of not only this game, but other Spider-Man titles over the Insomniac games. I just love the momentum and speed of web swinging and slamming thugs back-and-forth like a ragdoll, or jackhammer kicking them in the air.
Also, nice to see Ultimate Spider-Man getting some love!
P.S. I would love it if we saw a live-action Rhino that used this game's design as a basis.
Especially since the game let's you throw people off buildings without any webbing safety nets
I often find that you can get really close to the ground when you swing in Spider-Man 2. But in Insom’s Spider-Man 2, the amount of times I’ve swung in a similar arc only to have the animation force a character’s limb to hit a van or the road, is SO annoying. And it feels less like my error and more like I’m fighting with the game. Like the animation gives the character a different gravity that I couldn’t properly account for. Still fun but aggravating nonetheless.

I don't always agree with Aqua, but this is one of the times i disagree with him on a spiderman game. I personally always preferred USM and the first movie game to SM2, including the swinging, especially with USM. SM2 just doesn't feel as good as i feel like everyone says. Combat doesn't feel great, swinging is too loose, wall crawling is a nightmare, but it did change the way people saw and made Spider-Man games and i will always and forever be grateful for that

The game Is mid honestly,i understand i you like it but there are a Lot of things like plot holes or design choices that dont make any sense at all,and the combat just added More tools but not More problems to use againts those tools

@Itsme-wp8yc it's fair to say that you have no idea how Spider-Man stories are told, This is pretty common in people who simply watch "Spider-Man Video essays" who complain about Spider-Man stories and yet have no idea who the character really is.
Not liking the game for the lack of features and bugs is fine and acceptable but outright saying the story was bad is completely stupid.
Was it better then SM1? No.

Unpopular opinion, but I still say Spider man 3 for next gen had the best web swinging. It had the perfect balance of being physics based requiring plenty of skill and cinematic enough to where you can enjoy it and flow beautifully with style through the city without inevitably slamming into a wall every few seconds. Plus I love the fluid animations and how acrobat tricks this time around can be used to manipulate how much momentum you have while web swinging, swinging off traffic lights, flying in the air or jumping off walls. Of course the tutorial in game doesn't tell you how to pull off these tricks and tips or how to use these things to your advantage. This stuff is all learned through hours of gameplay. Unfortunately Sm3's swinging goes easily overlooked since most people who play it, tend to just do whatever to beat the game and be done with it entirely.
You deserve a thumbs up for the Black Cat comments alone.

I prefer the swinging/traversal in this over the Marvel's Spider-Man games, because it's more challenging. The traversal in the newer games LOOKS cool, but it feels much more satisfying to pull stuff off in Spider-Man 2 The Movie Game.

not only does it look alot better. swinging is very challenging to make it look good and keep the flow going, where og sm2 is alot more "basic" and less feature rich

The skill ceiling for this game was higher as you really had to master web swinging.

I’m not sure why ppl would say it inspired Arkham , Ik spider-man 3 was originally more like Arkham but they lost the guy that was doing the combat system so it was scrapped.
Spider-Man 3 also literally has a mechanic that's a precursor to detective mode.
USM is what I'd call an Arkham precursor because moving your analog stick to an enemy during combat will have Spidey automatically zip to that enemy

The PSP one, I mean. It's basically 2's graphics and gameplay but with 3's story. 2 on PSP was unfortunately not as good because it lacks the big open world
Spider-Man 2 didn't have the open world because the PSP at the time was new so devs were figuring out how to work with the hardware(I think SM2 was even one of the launch titles)
It wasn't till late 2005 that we started seeing more ambitious titles on the console

I HATE this game philosophy of making gameplay looking good by assisting the player, making the gameplay feeling so unorganic, at this point it feels like swinging and fighting are reduced to prompts and all actions seem so scripted, it doesnt feel like a game at all, it feels like an interactive movie, why do games need to be so cinematographic??
Insomniac Spiderman 2 is also a good one now imho.

I cringed at the title.
The 0% Swing-Assist in Spider-Man 2 got very close to making insomniac's Web-Swinging system to be the greatest... but what still holds it back is when there's a system locked in within it that keeps telling the player to LET GO every single damn time.
They literally had to make a canned animation for a loop de loop that only goes one time... through a dive bomb.
They might've just done that on a dime because they barely had much time to incorporate a momentum base loop, but still... they better fix it in Spider-Man 3 becuase were THIS close to achieving peak perfection 🤏.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has everything a Spider-Man fan could ask for and improves from other Spider-Man games yet people will still call it mid 🤦🏾♂️

Ah so what I asked for is a stripped down Arkham combat, needing to adjust a slider to not be able to hold 1 button to swing, not even a red to symbiote switching mechanic like WoS, only 8 minutes of venom, 5 of which are only from gameplay (which Ultimate did better, sue me), mid ass story that is YET another Symbiote invasion, AND STILL NO VERTICAL WEB ZIP?? COME ON HOW HARD IS IT TO CODE 2 JUMPS BEING VERTICAL WEB ZIP, AND 2 JUMPS + DIRECTION FOR HORIZONTAL WEB ZIP

@@blametheghost that combat is FAR from stripped down (if anything og sm2 is the stripped down combat lol), even without the slider the swinging is plenty hard, just because you can hold the button and GET to the destination doesn't mean you really did it. you were pretty damn slow and didn't look cool. (also are you complaining about options, who tf complains about options???, do you have difficulty options too?) game did NOT need a switching mechanic. the low amount of venom def sucks, but i still liked what they did with the crunch they had. story is fine, 1's one def had a better one. why do you need a vertical web zip that bad lol, would be nice to have but it's not the end of the world, just run up a wall or get a swing going.
Either the title is in reference to the last spider-man game you were talking about (amazing Spider-man 2), or you think that this game is better than the insomniac version. (Which it's really not.)
