For starting spark plugs in awkward spaces, I have a 6" piece of thick rubber tube which pushes over the ceramic, making it easy to run the plug in by hand, only needing the socket for final tightening.

I would at least do that cap and button Ray, if it has over 100k those contacts are going to be roasted, my 5.7 cap got a crack at about 120k and they also get moisture trapped in them. Those caps are very inefficient, when I changed the cap I also had to time it because it threw an engine light for base timing. Mine also had spider injection but it never caused an issue and I drove it till it had 250k on it and sold it, I figured it'd need a front main bearing or a transmission soon so I shipped it.

I knew those old plug gaps looked wide, but as it’s been over 30 years since I used thou to gap a plug, I wasn’t sure how wide. A quick on line calculator told me almost 2mm! That’s mad. Compressed mixture will have almost as much resistance as the HT lead insulation, at that gap. No wonder it’s misfiring. With coil on plug designs you can get away with wider gaps for a bigger spark, but with leads, the norm is about 1.1mm although this one comes up as 1.5mm. The crucial thing is for the spark to occur at the plug, not outside the combustion chamber, due to forcing its way through the leads insulation. It will always take the path of least resistance, so that needs to be the tip of the plug.

Next month I am going to change the plugs on my truck. Plus change the valve cover gasket. It is made annoying because I have to remove the intake to do it easily change the plugs, so I figured that I might as well fix the slow oil leakage. I am assuming it has original plugs as well. It's a '95.

2 of the best repairs I've found with the early vortec engines are also excellent upgrades.
1- Change over to the multi injection spider legs.
2- Change the plastic distributor for the aluminum model. In doing so, you can then upgrade to brass terminal cap and rotor without having to worry about severe terminal corrosion.
Here in Wisconsin with our temperature fluctuations the plastic distributor is an epic failure on GMs part. It can't dissipate the moisture like the aluminum one.

I agree with you, I did both to mine were worthwhile upgrades - I had the same broken wire on the ignition coil input, I found the breather tube compresses the wires and after time causes a break, I added an elbow and piece of hose to reroute the breather so it doesn’t interfere with the connection

You ain't wrong. Those injection spiders were money makers back n the day. Finally, someone designed some improved spiders, and things got better for the owners.

Little trick for those crab caps if you have issues with not starting during damp rainy weather drill 3 1/8 inch holes through the top of the cap make sure not to hit any of the traces this will allow the cap to breathe and let out moisture i used to have to replace the cap on my safari every 6 months even after replacing the distributor i drilled the 3 holes 2 years now no problems

The content on this channel is great. You can pickup great how to info as well as technique while being pleasantly entertained. That aside whats not on here is also great. The comment section also has great info. Whats absent is the mean spirited gotcha types waiting to make someone look stupid putting a lid on the exchange of ideas. Ray and those making comments make this channel awesome imo. Thanks

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that loves to mess with scammers. Normally before I say anything back to them I go BOOP just so they know how irritating the sound is before they come on the phone. After doing that to them they usually just hang up on me. Of course, for the ones that don't hang up I give them pur-t heck and that is normally the last time I hear from them. I seem to be on a lot of do not call list for some strange reason.

researching plugs for my former daily driver "when it ran or drove" copper core plugs have a 30k to 60k recommended replacement interval. but at 185k I'll use copper because platinum plugs would surely outlast the rest of it, yes I am in the 'salt belt' major frame parts seem to be ok atm.

No way I wouldn't have, the other issue with massive flooding like that is cylinder wash down. So much fuel will actually strip the oil from the cylinder walls and hurt the pistons.
