Nice
Tomcat pilot clearly was a very poor at dogfighting it. Clearly not fighting to Tomcat's strengths of rate fight and 2-circle (both in the vertical or on a horizontal plane). Getting into slow speed one-circle fights is an automatic win for the Hornet unless it is 'Okie' or 'Snort' who could make Tomcat do magic at slow speed, high alpha.
Sounds like a challenge better kick it a nickel em 😂
Agree. Raven thinking the Tomcat is actually a Flanker. And the turn reversal timing…… perfect setup for Longshot. You can’t give a pilot like LS open shots like that
Pretty much
@@SPFLDAngler What I stated, was the fact that comes straight from the pilots who flew F-14s and F-18s F-18 is a great one-circle and slow speed fighter at high alpha and that is what happened in this video, but. F-14 runs circles around the Hornet in a two-circle fight both in a vertical scissors and horizontally. That comes from the EM diagrams. Also, all of the videos on GrowlingSidewinder channel where he beats Hornets, are through out-rating it.
@@SPFLDAngler that was the reason why I was picking on them don't tell nobody LOL
That first round I think you shot every square inch of air around the Tomcat! LOL
The external shots made it easy to follow some of the more frenetic moments, like whenever Raven almost slammed his F-14 into your Hornet, i love those man!
A former Tomcat pilot told me when they flew against Hornets, if they were patient, the Hornet could never beat them. He said all they had to do was wait until it was out of energy and the fight was pretty much over because the Hornet could never recover that energy. It was apparently very easy to do flying the F-14D.
Agree, but maybe easier said than done?
It's like the F-4 vs MIGs-17 & -21, if the battle ends up being determined by the vertical component, the Phantom, with proper training is almost assured to prevail.
@@tracytrawick322 definitely easier said than done. All about being disciplined and not getting baited into a slow speed one circle fight. Snort Snodgrass actually has a great story about going up against a Hornet. Can find it on Ward Carroll’s channel.
In theory, you can move everything! It depends on the pilot as well but the ability of the aircraft also. F-14 is very powerful and for dogfight useful, but if you don't hear what the tomcat is trying to say to you i.e. you ignore the signals, you may just end in flat spin or simply turn and crash. The F-18 is more modernized, smaller and compared to the tomcat, slower but fast enough and how you can just put the hornet nose up with slow speed... Hornet is better, because you have to do all the job and set your systems as you need, its a deep learning machine. Tomcat is like an old car, you have your RIO and you say that you want to do, then you fly and always have to trim it. I love the big cat, but the hornet is in my opinion the best one in DCS. Just waiting for the new 3D Pilot model and carrier updates, huh man that will be good
Yeah the F14 went 2.34 mach versus Hornet 1.8
Thx for flying with a Swiss livery
Once a Hortnet gets you low and slow, you won't have anywhere to go.
You really put the sting on Raven today. Good job and great video.
In the 2nd round, the Tomcat diving down on the Hornet reminded my of a great white shark coming from below to breach on a seal.
Some spicy flying there!
Awesome video. Really shows a lot went into editing for best views.
Thank you so much buddy
One thing I notice is that with each video you do your PC performance is better and better. You seem more confident with each video. Nice work!
Great fights! Some people like baseball/basketball/football...I like a rate fight on the deck, or a ferocious one circle. Can't thank you all enough for puttin on the show. I've spent a lot of time enjoying you and Growling Sidewinder. Those were great guns! Way to stick with it. I don't have a sim pit setup yet, but that's my dream and one day I hope to play along. I LOVE a good dogfight, and that was outstanding...thanks.
RIO : How close are we going to be when we fire the gun? Aviator in the front : Yes.
Awesome video Mr. Longshot - I need to get back into the Hornet (been flying way too much F-16 as of late - the F-16 is my favourite airplane of all time...). Love to see how you handle the FA-18C in a dogfight! Looking forward to the next video! Stay safe Sir!
Thanks so much, hope I can put it out soon
If you look at the design of the F-14 and the F/A-18, and combine the two you would almost get a Su-27 variant. I would like to see a US fighter design with the same LEXs of the Super Hornet and the engine spacing of the F-14, maybe with a couple F135s for a powerplant.
Great video, Longshot!
Thank you
Longshot in su35 flanker vs f18 hornet, dogfight with missles, I always love to see you in flankers, its like art in motion, i would love to see this, best regards buddy!
Of course this is presuming that a Mach 2.34 Tomcat would even let a Mach 1.8 Hornet catch it.
Round 2 has to be one of the closest range gun kills I've seen.
Now that was a great vid, looks like the Tomcat driver needs to be working on his bird's strengths, he def looked good in the hassle he won. Btw, did you and GS graduate from the same aerial gunnery class? Asking for a friend.
Sheese. That first fight, no wait, that first pass was extremely close. Great scrap: bringing knives into a phone box.
Round 2's kill was epic, however.
Once again, Excellent.
Great vid
Round 3 was fantastic!
Raven sure makes that thing look like a sports car.
You and GS did not fight in a while, it would be interesting to see how you lads stack up now.
So, when does the annual worldwide video game competition start!??? Hey we really need this, unless people are worried about income because of losing a title or ranking this particular year haha
Well fought men !!!
The F18 can split for deferential throttle. Apparently you can't let it go below 50% on the reduced engine.
I thought you were going to run out of bullets in the first round!
Nice flying LS. Great video. see you on the next one.
Thank you so much my man!
You need to watch Reload and askeladd fly the tomcat in the slow fight.. these guys dogfight everyday..
*doesn't lead target*
O.O "what happened?"
For the F14 It's a challenge to aim for snapshots, Gf for both
The main reason the Hornet is flying and the Tomcat isn't is because some idiot thought it was a great idea to sell Tomcats to Iran. With modern avionics, and other updates the Tomcat would wipe the floor with any fourth gen fighter flying today.
The Hornet's flying because the Tomcat was expensive to maintain and operate and was fairly incapable of doing air to ground operations, hence why carriers fielded attacker aircraft. Retrofitting it would be more expensive than just buying Hornets in the long run, and with its radar cross section it'd be blown out of the sky somewhat easily from a distance, which is where all real world battles begin.
The Hornet provided a single, more advanced, and cheaper airframe that could do both AA and AG, basically eliminating the need for A6s and A7s while also allowing for a lot of fleet commonality in terms of training and maintenance. In a dogfight skill and luck to an extent matter much more than inherent airframe differences, and that's assuming either pilot would let it get that close, which they likely wouldn't as they'd be risking life and aircraft on a single engagement. A Tomcat _might_ be able to beat a Hornet up close depending on who's flying what, but it loses everywhere else that's important to it's existence, namely economics, capability, and logistics.
@@forzaelite1248 The next gem Tomcat could've been streamlined. The OG Hornet was expensive to maintain as well.
Heat is heat. Once you're locked it doesn't matter the size of the aircraft. Besides, you act like the Tomcat was a biplane.
As for air to ground. The Tomcat was more than capable. The main issue was the AIM-54 Phoenix which was a giant waste of money and space. If that space would've been used for more practical ordnance the Tomcat platform would've been a fighter/attack jet with bomber-esc capabilities. But some idiot decided it was smart to sell it to Iran.
Great video for showing how the Tomcat can give even a well flown Hornet a challenge. A number of times there where he was in front of you but was able to deny the shot by climbing over you. I myself made a habit out of learning to fly the Tomcat the way I fly the Hornet to great success.
Something I have wondered about for a while, does the game track cannon rounds shot? I understand that most Russian planes only have around a hundred plus rounds on board giving them only a couple of seconds or more of shots. The Vulcan has maybe 1000 rounds in the magazine but at 2000 rounds or so a second that goes quickly. Has anyone ever run out of cannon shots?
I played a Hornet flight sim back in the mid 90's. You have enough for several bursts. Looking online it seems like the ammo load is only 400 rounds. At 4,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute, you're burning at least 66 rounds for a 1 second trigger squeeze. So you have enough ammo for about six bursts. That seems about right. A one second burst is actually pretty long for air-to-air, if your bursts are a half second or less, you might be able to get up to 10 or more trigger squeezes.
tomcat has about 600rds you can blitz thru it real fast if blaze away
Yeah, you can see the ammo counter at the bottom of the HUD display. "GUN" with the round number right under it. Watch 3:03 when he squeezes off a shot, see the round count drop.
10:44 Round 4. the replay doesn’t show hits by tracers. Did LS get lucky? A gift by the sim?
How is he pulling that kind of AoA with the Tomcat??
When the Navy bought the F-14 as a interceptor I wonder if they had any idea what a awesome dog fighter it was, great fight LS.
Thank you
they bought it as a fighter capable of all the fighter roles, hence why it could maneuver, gun, bubble canopy, etc.
Round 1 missing by a long shot haha
Goose is NOT talking to him...
Round 1 - Not your best shooting there, Tex :)
Hornet my favorite ❤😂
So, if it wasn't a mid-air, what was it?
He shot from a really close range
When Goose said he shot from about 1.5 metres away, he didn't mean the photo, he meant this dogfight.
It was a midair collision… ravens bullets collided with the hornet midair 😂
Where you been?
Don't ask...
Fox 4 in Round 2 lol
My money is on the 14, I don't care for the 18 my self.
I'm more a kitty person and not a bug person.
I saw your Helmet que system help u a lot. Also you said he was great??? w0w I saw so meny mistakes...
A bit dissapointed, suisse F-18, not the FAF F/A-18 kick ass Hornet
Swiss guy here. We are a big plus even you are disapointed.
not first
dont know who the Tomcat pilot is but he neither knows the Tomcats strengths nor the Hornets weakness.
