Trying out My New Tripod - Benro Mach 3

  • I'm trying out and sharing my first thoughts on my new Benro Mach 3 Tripod with the B3 ball head. This is not a conclusive review but a presentation of the tripod and its features. This is the second time I use it and so far I am happy about it. There might however be one regret about the number of sections the tripod has. I test it out in the iconic Danish forest named Rold Skov.

    I have the same tripod but with the 2 twist locks on each legs, its a superb tripod. F-stoppers did a review of tripods and this came out top, beating Gitzo and others at 3 times the price (£350 versus £1000). I carry it for mountain photography and the flexibility and stability are superb.

    I recently did the unthinkable and left my Manfrotto on the beach! I bought the Benro Travel Angel to go to the Japan Rugby World Cup back in October and it's a brilliant piece of kit but wanted something heavier for those more challenging weather conditions. Weighed up Benro against Gitzo but simply can't justify the huge difference in price for similar specifications. Took delivery of the same model featured here 3 weeks ago and I'm so pleased with it. The quality really is extremely good!

    Looks a beast of tripod Mads. Been considering switching from my Manfrotto and been toying between Benro and 3 Legged Thing. Leaning towards the Benro as it offers the option of going for a geared head instead of a ballhead. Great images at the beginning too, sunlight looked beautiful coming through the trees

    It's a bubble level here in the US, not sure what Thom and Nigel would call it :) I actually bought the Benro TMA47AXL Extra Long Series 4 Mach3 Aluminum Tripod last month as a back-up to my Robus RC-5570 Vantage Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod, both are outstanding. For the Benro, I took Hudson Henry's recommendation of wrapping the proximal segment with bike handle wrap, so that I don't have to touch the cold aluminum during the cooler seasons, amazing how cold those puppies get, even in modest temperatures. Hope to see you next year for the 2021 Dolomites workshop with Samuel Scicluna (hint hint)

    Thankfully no trolls in the forest today. Nice pics considering your lack of time. At about 6 inches difference in height between the 3 and 4 sections tripods, the one you have may perform better in uneven ground areas where the longer legs may just be a benefit.

    How do people get low angle shots with that center column in the way?

  • @thesharpercoder
    @thesharpercoder Před 4 lety

    I am an old school DSLR shooter. Most of carbon fiber tripods are simply not robust enough. It is easy for the rig to become top heavy with a 70-200mm lens. There is no raising of the center column, because that only raises the level of instability.
    I shoot with older Benro Alloy tripods, Combination Series 3, which is similar to today’s Mach 3 Series. I love them. Oops, did I forget say I have two of them? The heavier alloy legs are very good on windy, gusty days.
    The tripods are like tree trunks. I notice he has a carbon fiber model. They are lighter, but they are not quite as robust for a DSLR. They may be perfect for the weight of a mirrorless body and its’ lenses. I expect him to reach that conclusion in a full review video.

    It's called a bubble level in English Mads. I almost bought a Mach 3 but I don't like centre columns and also like to do panos (Benro could only offer option of a Levelling base) so I got a Rollei Rock Solid Alpha (came with spikes) plus a bowl adapter and for lighter travel I've also got an ifootage TC7 fastbowl (has spikes built in!) courtesey of seeing Thomas hHaton use one for his panos. I went for 3 sections not 4 for both tripods for the reasons you mentioned. Time will tell how the Rollei stands up to use but can't fault Benro's reputation. Enjoy your Mach 3 :-)

    If you decide to use spikes (they are good when you’re on frozen ground), then make sure to use some grease so that they don’t get stuck (should also do that with the rubber feet) - especially when you shoot in or near salt water.
    If you would ignore the price, then you should look at the Gitzo GT3543XLS which is at the max 207cm, then you only need to extend 2 sections to reach 150cm .. weight is the same as a the Benro, but cost around 850€. I’m using it with the Benro B3 ball head.

    I have a Manfrotto tripod. It has 4 sections, which I like as it’s a little more compact for when traveling. However I am looking to get a new tripod as I’m not a fan of the central column. Although I’m more looking at getting a 2nd tripod for b-roll, so something smaller and lighter. I do love how this one has the ability to switch out the central column, as sometimes that extra height is needed.

    I've been using Benro Mach 3 tripods for almost two years and I love them. They are sturdy as hell and easy to set up with the twist leg locks.

    I have the same tripod, the TMA38CL Mach 3, that I use with a BH40 ballhead for travel. And it's no where near the quality of my Gitzo carbon fiber tripods which are about twenty years old and work perfectly. In fact I sent the first one I ordered back to B&H because the leg locks and legs were so sticky and gritty. The second one was better, but had the same issues. The first trip stuff started falling off of the tripod. So, I'm not a big fan of this tripod. But, you get what you pay for and it was much less than Gitzo or RRS tripods and it fits in my checked luggage. So, I'll continue to use it.
