    We just had our second blowout. The first was the original cheap China tire that comes with the trailer. It did several hundred dollars of damage to the rig. I realized that my tires were under inflated. I didn’t realize they needed as much air as they did, lesson learned. This second blowout tore off the side trim of the trailer. Since the first blowout I bought GoodYear thinking they were US made. I’ve been anal about making sure my tires are good and inflated properly. We had only traveled about 150 miles when it blew. So now I guess I’m buying a TPMS system. Thank You for the video and the info.

    @garyp9906 Před 2 lety +1

    Love your videos, guys! You rock. If I can say... I believe most blowouts on RV's happens because of two reasons. One, the tire is not inflated to the pressure recommended on the sidewall. I had a tire guy tell me one time that ST tires must be inflated to the pressure rated on the sidewall, or you will have a blowout. Second, driving over 65 mph. I never drive our RV over 60 mph, even on Interstates. If I'm on a county road or something, I'll pull over and let people pass if I'm not doing 65 mph or more. I drive with the China bombs that came with our RV and never had any problems traveling all over the U.S. Drive fast and not have the pressure up, I can almost guarantee you will get a blowout at some point. Keep the awesome videos coming!!!

    Tires heat up for a number of reasons besides the outside temperature and inflation pressure. Wheel alignment, loaded weight, driving style, (excessive braking, cornering too fast, as well as excessive speed) .......are all factors in tire temperature.
    We have the TST system and love it. One tip....use metal valve stems even with the lighter weight sensor caps (non flow through).......rubber valve stems will bend from centrifugal force at even moderate highway speeds. Our sensor caps were bending down far enough to touch the rims. Those rubber stems are not going to last very long.........

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety

      Yes, that's a great tip about the sensor caps. I know we have metal stems on the truck, will check the camper. Stay safe out there!

    Great video. One thing I have seen multiple times on trailers and RVs is the incorrect rating of tires on campers. Manufactures to save money or even dealers will put tires rated for the dry weight of the camper. When you add food, gear, propane and water that can add hundreds to thousands of pounds. Those tires may not be rated for the extra weight which in turn will cause heat build up and blow outs. I have walked through rv lots looked at tire load range then the GVWR of the trailer and the tires are rated for less then the total weight the trailer is capable of. When buying check the tires new or not better exceed GVWR of the camper/trailer. Stay safe.

We immediately switched them out for better tires, since we check the tires constantly, and seeing how bad the rips in the tire was. Your channel is great. I use Sailun load range G tires on my 10k pound toy hauler. I used them on my previous 5th wheel toy hauler as well after having multiple blowouts on the back right tire. Once I put the Sailun tires on i didn't have any problems. When I bought my new work and play I thought I'd run the China bombs that came with it. Wrong. 6 months later with maybe a thousand miles on them I had a blowout. Luckily it didn't do any damage. I put the Sailuns on and haven't had any issues since. I also run the tms system as well. They aren't guaranteed to prevent your rv from being destroyed because you can hit something. At least you know you have a flat. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people pulling an RV and had no idea they had a flat. It can be difficult to see the passenger side tires. Since buying my tpms I feel comfortable pulling at night again. For the longest time I wouldn't pull at night because I couldn't see the tires.

    We bought a used Solitude, and didn’t know the history of the tires. And they weren’t high speed rated. So I did my research, and ended up choosing Sailun S637 tires. I mail ordered them, and had them locally installed. The tire guys at the shop were in awe at how heavy duty these things are. Our first trip was almost 2000 miles from Wisconsin to southern Florida. Ran at highway speeds the entire way (70+) with complete confidence. The pressures were spot on the entire way. But your video has convinced me to get TPMS. Relatively cheap insurance, IMO. Thanks for all of your videos! Paul sure was a good addition to the team. ;-)

      Oh, and one other question comes to mind. Should one have the tires balanced WITH the TPMS sensors attached?

    • @LizAmazing

      Hi Douglas! It would be a good idea to get the tires balanced with the TPMS installed, but you probably wouldn't feel it on your trailer if you didn't. We got our tires balanced on the truck, but not the trailer when we added the system.
      So glad you are getting TPMS (remember to use discount code of LIZ15) as we believe everyone pulling a trailer should have one. I'd heard of Sailun, glad you are happy with them, good to know. Wow- 70+ miles per hour, you are definitely hauling!

    Tires are SO important. I agree with you on your points about heat and underinflation. Driving too fast, which increases heat, is another important factor, as is overloading. I very strongly suggest you replace those relatively cheap Westlake tires with Goodyear Endurance. Lives may be at stake. You spent a lot of money on that big heavy trailer, so don't cheap out now. Not that you are :). Its just that you are moving a lot of weight down the road and that is all sitting on something that is not up to snuff. The manufacturer is going to use whatever benefits their bottom line the most, and you have already had quality control issues with that unit. Please consider my recommendation.

    New subscriber, so visiting some past videos. Coincidentally, just installed a (TST) TPMS system. Paul's 'correlation vs. causation' point is spot-on. Here are some additional reasons they could have mentioned for installing TPMS: USA infrastructure (and fuel tax that supports it) are decades out of date, consequently even interstates and certainly many highways are in very rough shape, increasing tire wear. As RV'ing has increased, many of us are pushed onto unimproved roadways (USFS, BLM roads, U.S. & Canadian logging roads) with increased tire wear. The post-Covid era will only accelerate this circumstance. (Paul, almost no one knows what a EF-18A is; good catch!)

    When I bought my fifth wheel the dealer put new tires on it for me that were weight rated just enough to carry the weight that was on the axles. ( load range E made in China) I immediately took those tires off and put heavier grade tires on it. ( load range G American) I also had them filled with nitrogen. That way no matter what the ambient air temperature or the temperature of the tires they will always have the same amount of pressure in them. Doesn’t matter if you’re in 20 degree weather or 120 degree weather the pressure will be the same.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety

      Yes, that's a great point about nitrogen. We have not had that experience though. Now on our second rig that came with nitrogen and we still lost pressure with the cooler temps. We do sincerely recommend a TPMS no matter what kind of tires you have. I can tell you the peace of mind is totally worth it. Who knew that blowouts are often predictable? Be safe out there.

    I had the same idea with my Westlakes. If i have a tpms, then I'll know before they blow out. With just over a year and less than 10,000 miles, i saw tread flying off my trailer while driving on the highway. The tpms was reading proper tire pressure and temperatures around 130 on all 4 tires so i thought the tpms malfunctioned. It didn't, all the tires were still inflated but the tread completely came off of one of them and did a lot of damage to the fender flare and j wrap. I now have Goodyear Endurance. Maybe a fluke thing but a tpms didn't save me from Westlakes.

    wow your lucky i have a cdl and tpms is a great system for monitoring your tires but if you have the wrong tires on the rv it could cause your tire to still blow
    you have too weigh your rv with everything in it water food bikes tools everything plus add you and your passengers for a total gvw then check if the tires are rated to handle it
    most rv drivers don't follow or don't know that they're overloaded
    like your truck you had to up grade your tires and suspension to tow your bigger 5th wheel

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety

      We sure did, we upgraded tires and suspension. Yes, you're absolutely right that you want to make sure you don't overload your tires. What we love about TPMS is that they can actually predict (and therefore prevent) a blowout. We didn't learn that until after our flat tire incident. We think all people towing a trailer should invest in a TPMS. Be safe out there!

    About the TST system, why did you chose the Cap sensors rather than the Flow through style?

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety +1

      The flow through valves are heavier and you need to change your valve stems and we didn't want to do that. In retrospect, Paul wishes we went with flow-thru for the ease of adding air. Congrats on your 310GK! Hope to camp next to you someday!

    Drove team with my late husband driving tractor and 53 ft trailer..If something happened it was usually when I drove..Having the correct tire load rate is important..We were having problems with steer tires not wearing properly..Found out from a different dealer then we usually bought our tires from that we needed a heavier steer tire..Also alignments are important..Even a new vehicle or trailer directly from factory needs alignment checked..The manufacture will tell you they are aligned at factory..But we had tires wear premature excessively. Tire manufactures will blame it on road hazard..I've had tires blow..Luckily no damage was caused..One time when LH was driving across I-90 east in Minnesota on a very cold night just before Rochester a tire sheared off..Luckily no traffic thank God..So no harm was done..The first cab over semi we had was a nightmare..Along with company trailers..When we got a new semi and our own trailer things went better..Because we did maintenance when needed. Every time we stopped we check our equipment over..If a small problem developed we got it fixed. I like Kelly tires..They are made in the U.S.A..I try to buy America..We need to take care of our own people and provide jobs..Thank you for the video..Have a blessed day..

    I was driving my mom’s class B motorhome on the highway and we had a blowout. Even though it was a virtually new rig that’s when we found out that somebody had switched the tires when she had in for service and put on retreads.
    So part of the tire was caught up in the rig. The tow truck driver tried and tried and could not get it out so eventually his friend came along with a Mustang. He parked the Mustang on the part of the retread that was laying on the ground and we drove the RV forward to get it unattached. 😱

    Once on the highway, a tractor-trailer had a blowout right next to me, as I started to pass. The noise of the explosion was huge. I floored it and got out of there fast before the tire started to shred, which it started to do right after I got past it. Whew! Fortunately, I was not pulling a trailer. I was however driving a Saturn, which was acceleration-challenged, hehe. Thanks very much for posting that tire monitoring info

    So what about tire/wheel balancing? Also can these sensors be used with the rubber construction or should metal tire valves be used? I have a Class B motorhome with dually wheels with Borg valve extensions? The longer extension on the inside tire has a rubber support as the extension passes thru the outer wheel. Is this enough to keep the added weight of the TPMS sensor from vibrating? Nothing was mentioned about this.

      When I had my camper van, I replaced my valve extensions and valve stems with steel ones. And yes you should have them balanced. In our case, we have not balanced the trailer tires but we did balance the truck tires. There does not seem to be any issues with wear on the trailer tires. But in your case you will feel it so you should get them balanced. We do recommend TPMS for everyone and remember to get 15% off using LIZ15. Go here: tinyurl.com/TPMSsaves

    Oh, goody! A pop quiz before the video. Isn’t a Schrader valve the standard tire valve? And then there was another one that I was going to ask Paul about because I’ve forgotten what it was called. For high end bike tires like sew-ups. Wait! Presta! Been trying to think of that name for weeks and you just jogged my memory! Thanks. Just one of those bits of info that have been floating through my head recently. Ok on to the video. (And as I watch it, I see that you just answered my question! Well, never mind then. But yup, we old cyclists know our bike valves. :)
    But, yes, with our first pop-up trailer we had a very very very low tire at Great Basin NP. And there was no air anywhere to be had in the little town of Baker. An unstaffed gas station. Gas, no air, no water. Instead of heading south, we limped back to Ely. They had real services like a tire shop. We had a nail in our tire and they swapped it out for us. But I found out that our AAA didn’t work for the trailer, and Good Sam wasn’t very helpful either. And as soon as we got home, I bought a little AC/DC tire compressor! And before we go out, I check the pressures on all the tires and top everything off with that. And we have a repair kit. Jerry thinks I’m a bit compulsive, I think he’s a little too relaxed. You live, you learn. (And apropos of this blog, I am investigating tire pressure monitoring systems. So thanks for the recommendation. It’s been confusing.)

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Trish! Glad you know your valves!! Several people have mentioned AAA didn't cover their trailer. Paul has their Premier service does cover our fifth wheel, and they came out after we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge with our flat tire.
      I think having a tire repair kit is a VERY good idea! We know people that can plug a tire on the road, if need be. I think that would be handy for remote areas, traveling to Alaska, that sort of thing.
      TST Truck TPMS is second to none. We checked all the systems out and nothing can match it. We sincerely believe anyone towing a camper or trailer should have a TPMS system. AND it would be helpful on your Class B itself because you get an alarm as soon as air starts leaking out.
      Well thanks for your comment and hope you are keeping cool in California.

Instead they will ship parts to us directly and reimburse a mobile tech to fix right away.

    The other big cause of heat is overloaded tires. You must look at load rating of the tires. Most trailers and 5th wheels come with it’s tires rated for the empty weight of the unit, once you put 1000# of stuff in your rig your overweight. You may need to go to a heavier load rates tire. Look at you CCC and make sure you don’t overload your unit.

    Sorry, I have to share my china bomb story.
    While on vacation with our 5th wheel, we developed a squeak noise, noticable at slow speed. We could not pin down where it was coming from. We thought it could be our tow vehicle.
    On our way home, while going over a bumpy portion of the freeway, we had a tire on the trailer blowout. There is no indication of sidewall wear such a underinflated condition. This is a cord failure.
    Wish I could share the photos.

    CHINA BOMBS !!! I will put in my two cents. Tire load rating is when the tires are new and in perfect condition. Most RVs come with tires that will be loaded to maximum or over maximum load capacity. When the tires are going down the road they get a lot of abuse and the load rating will be less with the damage the tires will have from all the potholes and then you get a blowout. With Liz Amazing tires they are at great risk of having a blowout. Liz Amazing chose to repair their flat instead of replace the tire. Running a flat tire will cause side wall damage and reduce the load captivity. Liz Amazing other tire on the same side as the flat was overload by double the load capacity because it was taking the weight of the flat tire witch will damage the good tire. So Liz Amazing has two tires of a greater risk of blowing. As a rule of thumb both tires should be replaced to reduce the chance of a blow out. Everybody needs a TPMS on their rig and the TPMS system in the video is one of the best ones I have seen. My experience with CHINA BOMBS is to replace them before they are 3 years old anything older then 3 years, you are at a higher risk of a blow out. Great video as always.

      I learned a lot from our flat tire, number one is that most blowouts are not random. They can be predicted and prevented. We love our TPMS! Paul and I are talking about that right now and will monitor them closely. Thanks again!

    Does it make a difference having the color or grayscale screen?

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes. I do believe the color monitor is worth it IF you feel you will want to see it at a glance. It looks like it might take a little more effort to see the grayscale one. On the other hand, since it has alarms you really don't need to watch it. If you always have a co-pilot then they could pick up and read the grayscale one and have the time to safely scrutinize it. If you are solo and want to be able to see it at a glance, then get the color one. And remember to save 15% with LIZ15. Let us know how you like it!

    You need name brand tires designed for trailer wear.
    Most blowouts accure because a tire get low. Sidewalls flex building heat then blows out. Tears out everything and realy hurts.
    Keep those tire psi checked

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes! So true. We learned a lot from our flat tire and low inflation (which you can't tell by looking) is the number one cause of blowouts. With a TPMS you can just see at a glance if your tires are low. And that's a good reminder that people need trailer tires rated for their trailer weight. Also a TPMS can predict a blowout and allow you to remedy the situation BEFORE the tire blows. Be safe out there.

  • @stellaredruby2003
    @stellaredruby2003 Před 3 lety

    Read the NHTSA tire report 95 pages, I'll save you the trouble,very boring. The number one reason for blow outs is low tire pressure. The low tire pressure causes the tire to have more rolling resistance friction which in turn causes the tire to heat up. When rubber gets hot it will fly apart as it spins. Check your spare tire pressure before you leave. I bought a new Forest River with west lake crappy bias ply tires, I didn't even realize until the tires side wall started completely cracking not even a year old what a joke, I called Forest River & my dealer & raised nine kinds of Hell. I couldn't believe they were putting my life at stake along with everybody elses for their cost of a radial ($35.00) unbelievable. My new 37 ft. toy hauler has radials & a spare like yours does. My camper tires sit on treated lumber on gravel with tire covers, no issues. Hi Liz & Paul, water heater, never did hear anything about the nomad internet, you said you'd let me know or at least check it out. I looked into it, to expensive for me, looks like a good tpms system. Did you know that when you pull hazardous materials you're supposed to pull over & check your tires in two hours or 100 miles whichever occurs first? Yes I do know what a schrader valve is. You could learn a lot from a dumb trucker like me, have a good one, Adam.😁😎🤔

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Adam, thanks for your comment. And thanks for backing us up about the #1 cause of blowouts. Who knew that with a TPMS you can PREVENT a blowout? I now firmly believe everyone pulling a camper needs to consider a TPMS.
      As far as Nomad, I've been on host chat with them. Very misleading in that they say they have all four major cell phone carriers BUT (when you do a little digging) you must pick one. You can't rotate between them depending on where you are in the country. Seems pointless to me but does seem more targeted to people living in rural areas. They should change their name.
      Thanks again and keep on truckin!

    The MYTH of ”China Bombs” persists. There is ONE company that makes tires in the USA. Cooper tires. The rest are made elsewhere. Mostly in China. Tires have to meet federal specifications.
    The ”bomb” is the driver. Tires have many ratings. The one least talked about is the SPEED RATING. Trailer tires are rates for 65 mph MAX. All of us have been passed by an RV doing over 80. When you insist on pressing the pedal to the metal you are lighting the fuse on the ” China Bomb”.
    Walmart only SELLS trailer tires. They do not repair them. Loves only works on STEEL rimmed tires not the aluminum/magnesium rims. How do I know all this? My final walk-around before leaving Seguin, Texas revealed a flattening tire on the 5th wheel. It was a slow leak so I aired up. Loves was a mile away. The Walmart was next.
