“We want a meeting with Vice President Harris so we can talk to her to get a commitment for an arms embargo and a ceasefire.” That’s the demand of “uncommitted” delegates to the upcoming Democratic National Convention, who have pledged to withhold support for the Democratic presidential nominee over the Biden administration’s backing of Israel’s ongoing attack on the Gaza Strip. We’re joined by Asma Mohammed, a DNC-bound uncommitted delegate with Uncommitted Minnesota. She shares how pro-Palestine activism has shaped the 2024 presidential race, including Kamala Harris’s decision to tap Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate over Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, who recently likened pro-Palestine protesters to the KKK. Walz has also been “pretty clear in his support for Israel” but, unlike Shapiro and other politicians, has additionally demonstrated a “willingness to learn and to move,” says Mohammed, a Minnesota resident. Overall, she says, the choice of Walz has renewed hope for many in the uncommitted movement as “a reminder that Kamala Harris is different” than President Biden and may be more receptive to restraining Israel if elected.

Kamala can’t openly commit to an arms embargo on Israel before an election. She’ll lose the election if she does that. Arabs are correct but they are being unreasonable to ask her to do that right now. Kamala is better for Palestinians than trump. Kamala has said that there needs to be an end to this war. Trump would let Israel kill everyone is Palestine. An Uncommitted vote is a vote for trump and he and Netanyahu will finish Palestine.

It makes no sense to me that Asma says "During the primaries 46 thousand Minnesotans voted, saying that they wanted the war in Gaza to stop, right. And we know those people may not even show up to the polls in November. They have no reason to show up if there's no ceasefire and no arms embargo by November." Now look, I'm still learning about all this but it seems quite clear that we here in the US are fractured af fighting back right-wing extremist psycopaths (along with numerous other places), and trying to prevent a gd civil war!
It is one million percent disgusting that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians and that the US has been supporting these monstrous, evil, and vile acts. I am 43 and registering to vote for the first time in my life because the stakes are so high - and this after still not fully recovered from a serious health and spirituality crisis in my life. The reason to vote - for Harris/Walz - is so that Donald Dictator Wannabe Trump and Project 2025 doesn't get a red carpet welcome to convert America into a war zone and then into some other twisted form of The Handmaid's Tale. We have to protect against that first, right???!!! Otherwise, what America, whose America will be here to do anything about any of these kinds of things???
I agree with her whole-heartedly that there must be a ceasefire and we must stop supplying arms to Israel. But not having that done by November (which let's be clear, I think it should be), does not mean those voters shouldn't vote in the election!! What sense does that make?!
I'm voting to give us more time to deal with the myriad of problems that plague not only the US, but humanity overall, in the form of our completely delusional ideas about how we should live on this planet (capitalism and all forms of fascism being top of the list). I do not support the concept of politics but it's the system I have to use right now, so I feel I must because I can hardly bear to know what's happening in Gaza, it's horrifying on the deepest level, and I don't want anything even resembling that level of destruction happening here in the US (or anywhere else ever!).
So tell me, what is her take on the scenario of them not voting and then Trump being re-elected (not saying their votes decide, but him winning because people won't vote due to what she's saying is the very possible hypothetical I'm arguing here)? Is the ceasefire more possible in that scenario? I just don't understand how not voting when you are a voter in this situation adds up to a better possibility of stopping the madness both there and here. But if someone thinks I'm missing something that would make it make sense, I'm open.

@@yishnir No, I'm not missing that part. In numerous other places I'm tracking all this I'm hearing that even the political commentators and lawyers acknowledge they don't know what all is going on behind the scenes since Biden is still the actual president, not Kamala. I'm really just hearing a back and forth speculation about what and why she may or may not be able to just "open her mouth" and say what we all want to hear. Obviously the forces of Israel doing all this are full on psycho so I don't assume this is a simple or easy thing to navigate if she isn't doing what seems so simple to us.
Is it more sensible to assume she, with her history of prosecution, actually wants us to keep funding this repulsive terrorist group?Or does it make more sense to assume that since she got selected as VP a mere month ago and had to get into gear real quick for all the campaigning and DNC next week, that her team is working on this issue, knows it's serious, and is strategizing around a very delicate situation so as to not inflame things further and put the US at risk of being on Israels target list???
On top of that, if the (non corporate sponsored) people that know the law, fact check, and report on all this for their job don't have a clear picture, then how can the rest of us? If you know of someone reputable that is laying all this out in a clear way and supporting what you said, then please do share as I'd genuinely like to hear for myself.

All my sources are speculating about that since she's not the actual president and we're talking about navigating a very delicate situation where I can certainly imagine Israel setting it's sights of total terror and destruction upon the US if she just opens her mouth and says what we are desperately wanting to hear.

      3) She will normalize relations with Iran and Hamas and recognize Palestine
      4) She will threaten sanctions to force Israel to an immediate ceasefire and full prisoner swap.
      5) Threaten Sanctions and Military Invasion, to force Israel to dissolve its constitution and its apartheid, transforming the country (with UN supervision) into Palestine, a homeland for Jews, Muslims and Christians.
      6) Help rebuild the country and convince the new country to give full citizenship to all the Palestinians, and a right of return to all exiles and descendants (like Israel has for jews.)
      7) Make Israel pay reparations.
if she does this, she gets our vote. ... even just point 1 & 2 will work, she can use point 2 to force a ceasefire _(since Biden is obviously going to fail to fix that)_
if kamala is gonna keep the slaughter going, Trump will get our vote:
      1) Trump is surrounded by Antisemites, who also happen to have a similar outcome, despite their different starting points (like Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson) they are like the anti-Ukraine funding ppl, gonna limit spending on Israel.
      2) Trump is America First and is isolationist, he is also weak and will crumble US hegemony and international relations, making it harder for the US to cover and protect Israel by making the US weaker.
      3) Trump is easy to bribe, and there is a chance that the Saudis and Qatar could convince him to be more pro-Palestinian, he was pro-Palestinian in the start of his presidency and even met the PLO first.

      Yes. She can do more.
She can speak for herself, and she can tell Biden that he needs to ACKNOWLEDGE the State of Palestine as a full member state of the UN to help insure that she will win the vote in November.
If she can't clearly state her views on the State of Palestine before the election, she will be the one responsible for a possible loss to Trump and the end of American democracy. That will be on her and her racism and no one else.
She should know that there are enough of us to make a difference in the election on multiple levels and behave like a public servant and not like a dictator - even if a benevolent one.
She should listen to the people.
      War crimes are wrong.

      The untype g-word is wrong.
She should do the correct and moral thing to bring peace to the Middle East and stop this over 75 years of supporting racism and hate by the Zionists.
      And, yes, Biden is a self-proclaimed Zionist - a Jewish Supremacist - a racist!
It is also on him if his racism is more important than American democracy.

Catering to the "pro-palestine" crowd will only lose votes from the people who were actually going to vote in the first place. You can personally feel that Israel is wrong on so many levels, but if you are holding your breath for the day when politicians in this country are going to cater to the "pro Palestine" crowd over the "pro Israel" crowd, you'll be blue in the face. Also, I totally get people calling out the atrocities of the Israeli government, but I don't understand, at all, the seeming inability of anyone on the left to acknowledge, in 2024, that Palestinians are not the model example of a pluralistic, forward thinking society either. When did they become our role models? When did Islam get elevated on the left as some virtuous belief system? I thought it was the left's job to call out the insanity of religion in all of its forms. How are we at the point where we are applauding a country that still treats women like slaves, executes homosexuals, and doesn't allow for even basic freedom of expression. How has this society become the model society of what we aspire to be as humans? Does Palestine, generally speaking, really have values that in any way are compatible with liberal values? End rant

Acknowledge the State of Palestine as a full member state of the UN.
      -
"Security Council Fails to Recommend Full United Nations Membership for State of Palestine, Owing to Veto Cast by United States
The Security Council today blocked Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the United Nations due to a United States veto on a draft resolution that would have recommended the granting of such status.
The proposal, submitted by Algeria, received 12 votes in favour, with the United States casting a negative vote and Switzerland and the United Kingdom abstaining. A Council resolution requires at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes from its five permanent members - China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States - to pass. The Algerian draft failed, owing to a negative vote cast by a permanent member.
If adopted, the draft would have had the 15-member Council recommend to the 193-member General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be admitted to membership in the United Nations”.
In 2011, Palestine submitted an application to become a full UN Member State. Although that aspiration did not materialize, it obtained the status of a non-member observer State in November 2012 through an Assembly vote of 138 in favour to nine against (Canada, Czech Republic, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Panama, Palau, United States), with 41 abstentions.
An application for admission to UN membership must be approved by the Council before being forwarded to the Assembly, where the matter requires at least two-thirds support to pass..." - UN website 04/18/2024

The last thing the democratic party needs to do is listen to these people. The general public, left, right, or center, are not nearly as anti-Israel as people in their bubbles seem to think; poll after poll shows that even on college campuses, not nearly as many students are wrapped up in this melodrama as the news would have you believe. Trying to cater to the far left to gain one vote maybe will only lose a dozen more from reasonable people. Most of these people couldn't point to the middle east on a map two years ago but now act like being "pro Palestinian" is a literal part of their very identity. Final thought, if anyone in the US right now thinks that they have the luxury to throw their vote away on a protest candidate, or just not vote as some kind of self-righteous gesture needs to seriously ask themselves if Donald Trump will be a better "ally" to Palestinians than Harris, and is the Israel-Palestine conflict REALLY the thing that is going to impact their day to day lives so much that they would vote one way or the other based on how a candidate feels on this issue. I'm caring about who will uphold democracy here. I'm worried about who won't strip the rights from women away here. I'm worried about people trying to force the teaching of the bible in schools here. Yahya Sinwar is also responsible for torture of his own people, according to many sources. But Hamas just chose Yahya Sinwar as their top leader. How will a ceasefire last with Yahya Sinwar in this position? I am absolutely for a two-state solution and even for giving Palestinians a greater part of the land, but I no longer believe that this is an acceptable goal for the majority of Palestinians. -
"Security Council Fails to Recommend Full United Nations Membership for State of Palestine, Owing to Veto Cast by United States

"UN experts urge all States to recognise State of Palestine
GENEVA (3 June 2024) - All States must follow the example of 146 United Nations Member States and recognise the State of Palestine and use all political and diplomatic resources at their disposal to bring about an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, UN experts* said today.
“This recognition is an important acknowledgement of the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggles and suffering towards freedom and independence,” the experts said.
They insisted that Palestine must be able to enjoy full self-determination, including the ability to exist, determine their destiny and develop freely as a people with safety and security.
“This is a pre-condition for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East - beginning with the immediate declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza and no further military incursions into Rafah,” the experts said.
The State of Palestine, formally declared by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on 15 November 1988, claims sovereignty over the remaining parts of historic Palestine that Israel occupied in 1967: the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
As of 28 May 2024, the State of Palestine was recognised by the vast majority of Member States of the United Nations.
The experts welcomed the latest recognitions of the occupied Palestinian territory as a State by Norway, Ireland and Spain, which comes after the General Assembly overwhelmingly voted - with 143 votes in favour to nine votes against - to back Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the United Nations on 10 May 2024...."- ohchr (United Nations: Human Rights: Office of the High Commissioner) 06/03/2024

@@fintan9218 I guess you weren't around in the 60s.1) JFK was pulling out of Vietnam when he was killed 2) LBJ escalated the war 3) LBJ bowed out in '68 over the war protests 4) Bobby Kennedy, anti-war like his brother, was favored to win the nomination, but he too was killed 5) Peace candidate Eugene McCarthy got bumped by hard line Dem delegates at the infamous Chicago convention who picked Humphrey, another pro war guy, over McCarthy, the people's choice 6) Nixon, the law and order/pro war guy, who later sabotaged the Paris peace talks in order to prolong the war, became president. 7) Bottom line, it's the party bosses, not the people, who pick the president.

Acknowledge the State of Palestine as a full member state of the UN!
      -
      -
"Security Council Fails to Recommend Full United Nations Membership for State of Palestine, Owing to Veto Cast by United States
