Contrary to popular belief, Debby Boone was not the original singer of "You Light Up My Life," nor was the song ever meant to be about 'God.' It was in fact written exclusively for the 1977 movie of the same name. It was originally performed by vocalist Kvitka "Kasey" Cisyk, and lip-synched by actress Didi Conn who was the star of the film. Ironically, despite its comforting melody, the real life story of the man who wrote the music (songwriter Joseph Brooks) is very disturbing.

I remember as a kid watching the movie. Loved the song ever since. Though i was a kid in the 70s I remember good things about it
This is the best version by far of this song. Didi Conn did any amazing song.
Man, seeing all the little 70s things sure takes me back-vests and overalls, wide collars & flared pants, hats and tweed jackets, macrame plant hangers, soda from a tall bottle, wide flat cars (except for her old convertible of course), mop tops on the guys and bangs on the gals, thin eyebrows and blue eye shadow, tinted glasses and mustaches… Ah yes, now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get my fondue set washed and put away since we’re watching Eight is Enough, Charlie’s Angels, and Starsky & Hutch tonight!!
During the summers of 1985-87, I performed the song, a capella, during Talent Night at the German Summer School at Taos Ski Valley, NM. I serenaded a lady during the song and the entire audience of 150 sang along with me and enjoyed the show. You Light Up My Life has become my love anthem and I hope to serenade my future wife with that song. Brings me to tears whenever I hear the song.😢
This is more emotional, but, never soggy, yet warmer, stronger and more intimately appealing to my soul than any other “commercially successful” versions, though they all did what they could do best at the time.
To me, this is the true and only original. I’ve loved it since the first time I heard her voice in the movie. Thanks for lighting up my mind!

I've always heard it by Debby Boone, since one day in 1977. Never by her, as she was the one who originally recorded it. The interpretation that she does in this song leaves me speechless. I never thought I could see someone sing it better than Debby Boone. I don't want to take a single carat from Debby, but from now on (May 14, 2023) I will keep her in mind... to see in her the best way to give my soul and even my life.

This song is so pretty. It is a Torch Song. That same year of release, Candle On The Water, was nominated for Best Original Song. Lost to this well-deserved winner. But I really Really REALLY love COTW. I still get teary eyed listening to Helen Reddy sing her heart out to her Lost Love.
I was 9 years old when this movie came out and everyone knew that Debbie Boone was selected to record it for mainstream because of something with Kasey Cisyk wouldn't sign a recording contract (I may be wrong. But that's how I remember it) so they used her version and released it as a single 46 rpm and didn't give Kasey credit instead they put Original Cast on the single. We all know that Kasey's was the original recording and was used in the movie and its soundtrack. I remember they had a contest to find a new singer for the song and Debbie Boone won. It was released and spent 10 weeks at #1 and was played on the radio nation wide every hour every day for weeks. It began to drive people crazy because they constantly played it. Debbie's version was not released to be a gospel song it just became that way from Church goers. A song, any song can mean many things to many different people.

I was teenager that time. NoevI can sing this pretty song to my husband.
When I saw this movie at the cinema the only thing that jumped out was the main song by Cisyk. Later I heard it by Debbi Boone but for some reason I could hear the difference it never occurred two different singers were involved since the film didn't list Cisyk. Cisyk is by far the best version. Debbi Boone did not want to copy Cisky but she was under contract and they would stop her when she tried to sing it different. No one should blame her. Brooks was the real criminal in cheating Cisyk. He committed suicide after being charged with sexual crimes.

I watched the movie. It was too sad.
Nobody gives Kasey her due credit for her great vocals on this song, as well as the others in this movie. After all, it was her vocals - and Didi Conn's acting - that made people want to hear this song on the radio, not Debbie Boone. Kasey's version was a 1000 times better than Debbie's or anyone else's who tried to ride on Kasey's coattails.
