    You know what? Running a car engine without motor oil makes the engine louder, too. Question is for how long.

  • @nothotties
    @nothotties Před 7 lety +179

    I did this to my bike and when I started riding it exploded and now my city is missing like 5 blocks

  • @TheMd1975
    @TheMd1975 Před 7 lety +280

    Note, grease doesn't build up with time. The grease is what protects your bearings from wear. The removal of the grease will just make a hub a time bomb waiting for it to explode. Seeing that is an Odyssey rim and hub doing that is going to end up costing you some money. If it hasn't yet, it will.
    NEVER use WD-40 on a bike! It's a degreaser and not a lubricant. Use something like TriFlow or chain lube.
    Warning ⚠️ following the ideas in this video will definitely mess up your hub and can lead to injury. Think: 3' tall ledge or more and you drop off it after doing this. Most people don't have a clue without doing this if the internals are good let alone setting them up for a ton of wear fast. And your hub blows sending you flying. Broken teeth maybe or more. Just saying hopefully even 1 person reads this and won't do it

    • @luke9299
      @luke9299 Před 7 lety +9

      M Davis Wd-40 is not a degreaser lol

    • @TheMd1975
      @TheMd1975 Před 7 lety +13

      You may want to read the can and google what it is for. Ask your local bike shop. If you don't know that most of them have a running joke about WD40 and bikes. That's why they launched a full WD40 line for bikes.

    • @luke9299
      @luke9299 Před 7 lety

      M Davis google is not always right wd-40 is a lubricant. Oil is a thicker lubricant. Grease is one of the thickest lubricants.
      Degreaser removes oil and grease from a surface, if you use Wd-40 on a hinge it will lubricate it. If you use exports degreaser or any degreaser on a hinge it will start to rub and make sounds and eventually seize.

    • @TheMd1975
      @TheMd1975 Před 7 lety +3

      20,000 subs with 1 video challenge It's a solvent not a grease. Your talking about a door hinge. It coats it like oil, however it is not something you want to put on a bike. No google is not always right, but everyone seems to use it so I said to google it. I have been riding a long time and know if you put stuff like WD40, 3 in 1 oil, vasaline in a bike hub it breaks down. WD40 like oil won't mix with oil. And at temperatures that hubs internals can reach (depending on what and how you ride) it thins out. Grease gets thinner also but not to the degree of the 3 I mentioned. That's why WD40 launched a bike line. They knew people would use their products seeing they had been already. Yet bike shops wouldn't touch a bike with it. It isn't safe in original form for that application. Most good shops have don't have original WD40 in their shop. Of the 3 near me none have a single can, but all 3 have the new line for bikes.

    • @TheMd1975
      @TheMd1975 Před 7 lety +5

      20,000 subs with 1 video challenge Or read this:
      WD stands for "water displacing" and its main use is as a solvent or rust dissolver. The lubricant-like properties of WD-40 come not from the substance itself, but from dissolving components. And the effect doesn't last. WD-40 can be a good substance to start with - it can help clean up rust or other grime.
      Taken from the WD40 site/explication of how it works

    • @Fit.digital
      @Fit.digital Před 6 lety

      MJM Productions the reason they want quiet hubs isnt for the noise its because hubs with more engagement points are usually louder and cause more drag, and road bikers want the least drag possible, if you ever see a hub like a profile elite it doesnt spin for very long because it has a lot of drag. If the hubs that were loud had little drag im sure road bikers would choose them but they want all the speed they can get

    • @Fit.digital
      @Fit.digital Před 6 lety

      MJM Productions and some mtbers want quiet hubs some want loud hubs, shimano released a silent hubs recently that has decent engagement for a mtb hub and it seems to sell pretty well but so does the i9 hubs and other loud hubs, its really preference

    I have more grease in my sprocket than there is at a 'Grease the musical'. I like a quiet ticking but have an old Haro with the flip/flop wheel(which amazes a lot of people still) ,It has a nice loud sound. It's the sound of precision engineering and it is a satisfying sound to the ear. Precision engineering.

    Bro. Your channel is awesome. My hub locked up after 8 years. The bike shop told me it’s better to replace the whole wheel. I saw your other video where you said bike shops will say that so the customer will buy a new wheel. I went ahead and ordered a new wheel. My current wheel I will probably buy a KHE hub and have a bike shop swap them out. Thank you for your commentary.

    I'm a bike mechanic at a bike shop and cleaning out the grease in the hub isn't going to break it. some companies like Profile even recommend keeping your hub driver as dry and clean as possible. However in doing so it doesn't make your hub louder or any less quiet. Also do not recommend over tightening lock rings or cones (driver bolt) and it just puts more stress on the bearings. For sealed hubs the bearings themselves have grease in the seals and that's what will lubricate your hub the grease you see that builds up in your hub is excess and grime and dust that builds up in your hub after use.
