Whoever designed this level is Satan himself
Isaac Jenkins 🤣🤣🤣
Burnt_R1ce Lol it takes a while to figure it out.
Devil’s advocate, gives you a shit ton of coins
i agree!
Well in this level, you got 2 choices,1 getting impressed and keep grabbing the money or 2 don’t getting impressed and escape yourself from it by finding the secret door to eventually reach the exit,, that’s like real life,,you got 2 main choices,1 or you get impressed by money in wich this world is all about,, or 2 you escape from it by symbolically finding the door to heaven
I feel like such an idiot. When I pressed the P switch I never realized a door appeared in front of me. I guess I was distracted by all of those beautiful coins.
Same
Wooooowww lmao that makes two of us
YOU TRYIN TO KILL US u
Shiny yet deadly coins

Thank you. With no enemies and no way into that pipe I thought my game was broken.

I was 5 years old in 1990 and I got frustrated at this level and I never finished it after playing the NES for 5 hours, I finally finished it in February 2022.
I'm here feb 2023. Our work is almost complete
Hey fella, in 1990 I was 5 me too... Time flies relentlessly. I don't know how much time I've spent on playing SM3 Worlds/Levels. Golden nostalgia 😉
Nintendo
Trolling their fans since 1990
1988
The U.S. version was released in 1990.
even before that, in the original SMB you had World 7 Level 4
How did people manage to do this before the internet??
Kristian Bullard
Word of mouth.. like most things.
Process of Elimination. There's not that many things you can do in the level.
Yes, but there are many, many bricks that you can punch or flick with your tail, trying to figure out if there is something hidden in just one of them somewhere.
It's easy to say that it's easy in hindsight.
Gotta sell those Nintendo powers you know what I mean
"Game Guides" were a thing. A book with instructions and picture guides.
a.k.a the level where you can boost your score and have 99 lives
or..."The Fortress of Greed"!
And get Free Tanooki Suits.
@vidaa82 I called it "the infinite fotress". I dreaded it a lot, i always used a cloud to skip it cause i knew no way out. It was a trap for me.
Exactly
Haha or that one level with the flying guy and the shell. Give it a few minutes and you’ll get 99 lives just dont get hit
I was legit stuck here for 2 hours until I gave up and looked up a guide. This feels like a level a kid with no knowledge of game design would make in mario maker
It gives you as many lives as you want
@@matheus5230 Not when you have no idea there’s a switch hidden in a random block. Then it’s just an empty, seemingly broken level with virtually no indication of what to do
@@chansigma834 I guess the developers just didn't want to hand out 99 lives on a plate. Maybe that’s why the level is so cryptic.
@@matheus5230yeah except the progression is tied to finding that stupid block
This level makes hot garbage Mario Maker levels look good.
Mhm
Come on, this level is amazing to farm as many lives as you want
@@matheus5230 correct but it can also farm your lives (get you a game over) cause of how hard it is
@@quazoinkarooeg Not if you know what you are doing. There are no enemies here
@@matheus5230 theres lava
Nintendo using Dev exits before SMM made it popular
If this was a level created in Mario Maker the level creator would be bombarded with "boo"s. Holy shit
Now I’m going to make it
Players who wanna to remake SMB3 in SMM:
im gonna call complete bullshit on the level design of this level. At least should have taken away the timer
That's the thing. This is what made the "Fortress of Greed" so memorable. It gave you the false hope that the stage is easy, just filled with coins to gorge on with many lives to have...but no way out, unless you figure it out.
It took my brother and I *DAYS* to figure out that you had to fly your way out, and that the coins were just to entice you to stay and waste out time (leading to a death). It was literally one of the first puzzle stages that the Super Mario Bros Series had (after the infamous 8-4 Bowser Main Castle in Super Mario Bros 1.)
But you can get as many lives as you want, so timer is not really a problem here
I remembered actually figuring this out as a kid, but now 20+ years later I forgot about the pipe at the top, good thing there's CZcams now a days!
AKA J
Exactly why I'm here too.
Knew it all perfectly back in my teen years.
But NOW, after so many years absent from the game, I've totally forgotten many of the little tips and tricks.
So yeah, thank goodness for the internet hehe
I always found this fortress in particular to be rather ominous and spooky because of the lack of enemies inside(except the boss of course). But I suppose Nintendo wanted to go for a more lonely/haunted setting with this fortress specifically.
*course* ,not coarse. 😂🤣
@@jayskicksnfits9372 Shut up, my man make one mistake
@@zxzeshnik4701 Why don't make me shut up with your 8 subscribers on your dead channel, you f'n clown. Get yourself some content. Until then, you have no room talk. So have several seats! 😒
I always got the same vibes from it too, it's eerie how none of the things that would normally be active where there. No enemies, no candles, no ghosts popping out of those white bars, etc. Almost a video game equivalent of a liminal space.
@@redsquirrelftw A liminal space before liminal space. Now THAT is a good analogy right there!
I did that coin stuff like 100 times as a child.
+Richard Knights I did it like 100 times now.. as an adult..
Yep. You were caught in the "Fortress of Greed".
@@Einar979 Lol
after all this is a great source for infinite 1-ups, it's just not so clearly to see it at first
Now I know why so many levels in Super Mario Maker are hard.
Oh man.
I *did* find the pipe at the top, but thought that this was just an exit. So I spent the rest of my time trying to find a solution to the "puzzle", even looking for some patterns in the platforms down below and looking for hidden blocks, thinking that I'm missing something.
This video *really* is a godsend, thank you!
1:50 for the part that matters.
Really confusing level, but atleast there's a reward room with Tanooki Suit
Where
Rinne
You obviously didn't watch the video
Ultra Aryan 10 Yeah if you don't know where you're going it's really confusing.
I had to give up a hammer bros suit to beat this stupid level. Reward my azz.
I never used any guides nor videos before this, this level was literally a puzzle with so little time.
Smb3 has truly memorable levels...
Welcome to the Fortress of Greed.
This level was nasty back then until we understood. Trial and error and it took days to figure out. We tried many blocks to find a switch. We all thought that door next to the switch was a secret until it lead to almost the same place. We flew around and you can't imagine how satisfying when we found and entered the pipe in the ceiling.
One of the most evil levels in videogame history. SMB3 is the best in the series because of child abuse like this level.
The first time I got stuck in this level, I always used the Cloud item to skip it, since I thought it could not be beaten. Bloody frustrating!
Wait, THE CLOUD ALLOWS YOU TO SKIP LEVELS??
@@trambus1144 i was today years old when i found about this 😂😤
Nintendo: Treat the player fairly, No one likes a troll!
Nintendo in the 80s and 90s:
The thing that pisses me off the most about this level, is that if you don't find your way at the speed of light you're dead. Not even knowing the solution you can manage easily!
Gonna be completely honest: if this single level didn’t exist then this game would probably be one of my favorite Mario games, this singular level drags it down so much.
I always had a feeling this level was unfinished, In the room at 0:06, it looks like Stretches, Hot Feet and Roto-discs were meant to appear as there are 2 Stretch blocks but oddly no Boos pop up from them and also there are hot feet candle bases but no hot feet, Also, those balls that the Roto-discs spin around but no Roto-discs, that’s why I think this level is possibly unfinished, that same room also makes me nervous as I had a feeling a Boo was gonna pop up from one of the Stretch blocks
True. But maybe they only want you to think that.
Yeah they want you to think something is off, so you need to find something weird as well.
I think that's a gag on the designers' part...you wanna see a level that they REALLY barely finished, check out the worthless Donut Secret 2 in Super Mario World.
@@wrs6565 I just saw a video of it and I don't understand what you mean.
@@OneWeirdDudeDonut Secret 2 has barely anything of interest in it
It's so creepy how lonely this castle feels. Kind of like SM64
This feels like a precursor to the Ghost Houses.
this is actually the creepiest csstle level on smb 3 tho
it has no one else there
Exactly. The total absence of life forms always creeped me out.
And the fortress in level 5, the one which had the passage for the sky. that too was scary for me.
I found the switch, farmed lives, but still had no idea what do do. Thank you, this video is awesome
I legit just used a p-wing, I don’t know how they hell you’d figure that out without a guide.
By trying things out lol
Back in the day, we just had friends or family who would help us out.
Or as said above.. just kept trying (in major frustration) until you figured it out.
@@ozlass7778There aren't that many choices in terms of what you can do, so should be easy to figure out eventually.
ultragamer659
Well, it's not exactly that simple.
Especially when there are so many bricks that you can punch.
You could run out time over and over punching bricks until you get lucky and eventually strike the correct brick. And in the meantime, run out of lives doing it.
@@ospreytalon8318 If you think figuring things out is so simple, try beating God of War without any walkthroughs.
Loved this level. Played it over and over for a shitload of lives
So mad at Nintendo for doing us this way
World 7 is the world that just trolls you
Super Mario advance 4 editorializes this level a bit. Gives an extra tile more next to the door in the power-up room with the un-enterable pipe.
This helped me so much thank you!
PATCHY HAS NEVER SEEN SUCH NAUTICAL NONSENSE
It wasn't the door that was my problem it was the fact that i couldn't find the tunnel when flying up there and now i feel stupid
10,000 Subscriber's with no Video's :P literally me right now
You shouldn’t feel stupid; this level is terribly designed.
@@ars7374 This level gives you chance for infinite lives
I love this level. It’s how I get 99 lives before level 8
Playing with my parents rn and needed help with this level thanks!
I want a Mario maker remake of this level with enemies. Have some dry bones in the blocks room.
Thank u, Idk Who Made this level but it was hell literally
Omg I was stuck for about 20 minutes on this level lol thanks for the video
Thanks i hate running into secret puzzles like this, stalls the game
How the hell did I miss that pipe?! 😂😂
Before I was 10 years old, I was stuck on this level.
I think I might have actually cried in frustration at 1 point.
I forgot how it happened, but I eventually learned how to get through this level.
Now I can breeze through this level fast & could since maybe age 11 (there were gaps in between times when I played this game).
I WAS STUCK ON THIS FOR A YEAR OMG
I would have never passed this shit. Damn you. Whoever made this game was way before their time 👏🏾
Oh man, thank you so much!
I always liked this silent fortress. It was the only one without enemies except for Boom Boom. You could get 100 lives in this.
I will always defend Mario 3 to the death. But I will make an exception for this level. There are so many bricks surrounding the first room, that you can waste so much time breaking the ones on the roof, or tail whipping the ones on the left and right area. They should have made the top, left, and right area grey blocks. That way you can figure out where the P Switch is without wasting too much time. Also, that room over the lava pit should have had the pipe on the right higher up out of view. That way the player wouldn't jump up towards it, and think their game is bugged because they can't go through it. I appreciate that this level wanted to do new things, but the exactution could have been done a lot better.
I didn’t think I’d have to look anything up for this game and then BAM! This fucking level
miyamoto an opp for making this level
HOW THE HELL DID PEOPLE FIGURE THIS OUT IN 1990?!
Thank you i was playing it one night then i got to that level and dang i was stumped then i saw you play and noticed the door that appeared thank you very much!
Holy moly tysm I barely past unfair Mario (7-4 or 5) but this I couldn’t beat
thanks bro, that really help me a lot
By far my least favorite mario level of all time, I already don’t like Mario 3 that much and with a level like this it just made me so mad
This level is hot garbage
7-7 and 6-5 are also garbage
@@spongey01234 No. Those levels are great, specially 7-7
Mario 3 is the best 2D Mario, so many amazing levels and diverse design
As bad as this level is, I would still rather play it than the hot garbage that is called Tubular in Mario World.
I'm having some kind of emotional response to the music to this thirty years after the fact.
nice level design you got there nintendo
the only level I had to lookup a guide on💀
Its one those levels that any troll from Mario Maker would make
This was very useful as the gba version is the exact same level
All the other videos didn’t work but this one did
That P Switch took some time to find, but it gives plenty of coins.
Thanks this really helped
Whoever designed this level deserves a death penalty I swear
i was stuck in this level for 3 freaking days didn't knowing what the hell do thanks you
Thank you 😀
The first time I came across this fortress I found it oddly quiet. No enemies at all except for Boom Boom.
i can not express my gratitude
Thanks for you help !
This level design though... WHY?!
The first time i have played this game i got stuck'd on this level for years before i discovered the exit
"Hello guys where are you?" Level
I am sitting in front of my NES wondering who and why someone decided to waste the precious life making this piece of crap, I sat there for two hours wondering what I have to do. Thank you this video was a lifesaver, I now feel bad for me and my younger friends raging 😂😂😂
World 7-Fortressが高くて難しいよ!!!
Yo quede atrapada en este nivel jaja me aburri pero vine a buscar a youtube gracias por eso te ganaste mi like👍
Yes I needed to beat this now there is a tutorial right here
I love this game so much but I hate this level, I'm replaying the game now and I needed to watch a tutorial to remember how I did this the first time
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
The flying part is ridiculous hard
This was the hardest level out of any game... 🤦🏽♂️
The level is not hard, it's just unfair.
@Lark T you think this level try figuring out the Fortress in world 8 without cheating now that stage is a literal maze.
Thank You so much!!!!!
😂😂 you look just as confused as I was when I was looking at a walkthrough for this level.
Thanks bro
Tres bonne video :)
Motendo67 tes vidéos sont bien, je m'abonne !
I just glitched through wall in the first room then just spamed jumped up and started the fighting boom boom lol
gracias bro me quede atrapado en este nivel y no tenia ni idea de como pasarmelo

Holy shit thank you. Shit was mad confusing and thought something was wrong with my Switch
Me ayudó mucho! Gracias, no sabía que hacer en ese nivel.
Я не знаю испанский, но уверен, что там много оскорблений.
This is where I found out that getting over 99 lives resets you to zero.
Muchas gracias crack
bro ive been stuck for 2 days
I weirdly figured this out as a kid. And by figured out I mean I used a P wing and just flew to the pipe on the roof.
i played smb3 and some levels i am questioning how my dad got past them when he was a kid
dude I played this on the Gameboy and I couldn't find out where to go. Then I realized you had to go up...it looked so obvious lmao
Thx fam
