Japan is Rebuilding its Ancient Capital

  • For the majority of the 8th century, Nara was home to Japan’s first permanent capital. Known as Heijō-kyō it was a massive planned city with somewhere between 100,000-200,000 inhabitants. But it was suddenly abandoned when the court moved to what would become Kyoto. Buried under farmlands for over 1,000 years, many remains of this lost city have now been excavated, and some of its most important buildings are being reconstructed. This video showcases several of these projects.

While making this video I kept finding interesting things I wanted to include in the script, but in the end had to cut out a lot because it was getting way too long and because a lot of it wasn’t strictly necessary in order to talk about the reconstructions (which was the intended topic). So I thought I’d briefly mention some of the things I read here instead:
Heijō-kyō wasn’t the first Chinese-style capital built in Japan. That distinction goes to the city of Fujiwara-kyō, about 20 km to the south, at the other end of the Nara Basin. It is actually believed to have been larger than Heijō-kyō in terms of area, but only lasted for sixteen years, between 694 and 710. One of the main roads of this city extended in a straight line all the way to Nara. It had a total width of almost 35 m, and upon reaching the main gate it widened even further, transforming into Suzaku Avenue. As mentioned in the video, the gate was called the Rajō-mon. An equivalent of it also existed in Heian-kyō (Kyoto), which provided the setting and title for Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's short story "Rashōmon". In 1950 it was adapted into the classic film of the same name by Akira Kurosawa.
Before these cities were created, Japanese capitals had consisted of a series of ever-grander 'palace complexes', courts that moved with changes of reign. More than a dozen such transfers of the court have been identified for the period from 593 to 710. There were probably a number of practical reasons for this custom, but it has also been attributed to the Shinto belief that the death of a ruler caused his palace to become polluted. So, to avoid bad luck, it became necessary for his heir to transfer the court to a new, ritually pure location.
The fact that Nara had once been the capital of Japan was never forgotten, but the exact size, layout, and location of major buildings were unknown until the 1850s, when a scholar and government official called Kitaura Sadamasa began to survey the area. He discovered that parts of the grid still survived on the ridges of rice fields and on local roads, and managed to compile a map, estimating what Heijo-kyo had looked like. Sadamasa correctly guessed the location of the Imperial Palace, where Sekino Tadashi would later find the remains of the Second Daigoku-den.
Not long thereafter, in the early 1900s, a preservation movement began to take shape. One of its leaders was a gardener called Tanada Kajūro, who planted many of the old trees that can now be seen in Nara Park (famous for its free-roaming deer). He would dedicate his life to commemorating the Heijō Palace ruins, and at one point advocated the idea of rebuilding the palace as a Shinto shrine. This idea came from Heian Shrine, a copy of the ancient palace in Kyoto, that had been rebuilt in the 1890s as a shrine dedicated to the first and last Emperors that reigned from the city. This scheme never gathered enough support however, and while the preservation efforts were making steady progress in the 1920s, Tanada became embroiled in a controversy related to the project, and chose to commit seppuku to prove his innocence. A statue of him can now be found along the reconstructed Suzaku Avenue, near the entrance of the Palace Complex.
The true scale of the palace was only understood when ongoing excavations began in the 1950s. Before then, a railway line had unknowingly been built over the southern part of the ruins, which still remains today. There have recently been plans to relocate it, but they were put on hold last year by the new governor of Nara Prefecture, over doubts about the financial viability of the project.

Absolutely interesting, loved this video. Got a question, before the great Chinese styled palaces, these moving courts constructed temporary buildings? Are there remains of them? What was the architectural style before the Chinese influence? Many thanks!

@@GarfieldRex The buildings could be disassembled and rebuilt somewhere else with relative ease, which made moving a lot more practical. A number of these sites have been excavated, and while I'm not sure what the earliest ones looked like a lot of the later palaces were inspired by Chinese models. Daigoku-den halls can be found by around 600 A.D., but the palace buildings of Fujiwara-kyō were the first to use tiled roofs in the Chinese style. If you want a taste of Japanese architecture prior to Chinese influence then certain types of Shinto architecture, like Shinmei-zukuri, are believed to be very archaic, retaining the basic features of buildings from the Kofun period (250-538 C.E.) The most famous example of this style is Ise Shrine.

🥀THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the Salvation of the last day that Christ brought the second and last incarnation of His new and holy name"
(People only experience in the last days the reappearance of the Redeemer in the flesh, and they receive the personal work and words of God. This is because the last days are the conclusion of the whole age. These the sum and end of God's six-thousand-year rule plan, and these are the end of mankind's suffering life journey. My work will only last six thousand years, and I will I whose contempt for all mankind will not last more than six thousand years. I will not continue or delay any more: In the last days I will conquer Satan, I will take back all My glory, and I will take back the all the souls on earth that belong to Me so that these sorrowing souls can escape from the sea of suffering, and thus My whole work on earth will be finished. I will only do one thing on earth: I will change mankind, the humanity that is holy, and My faithful city on earth. This humanity will remain with Me forever, but it is not the vile filthy humanity of today, but the humanity accumulated from My earnings. The spoils of war I have rescued from Satan's domain, and are the only consummation and fruition of My six-thousand-year rule plan. They come from every nation and denomination, and every place and town, throughout the universe. I will destroy this ancient, and utterly defilement of mankind, as I destroyed the firstborn sons and cattle in Egypt, leaving only the Israelites, who ate lamb's flesh, drank lamb's blood, and sealed blood of sheep's on the beams of their houses)
      Almighty God said
PEOPLE only in the LAST DAYS experience the RE-APPEARANCE of the REDEEMER in the FLESH, and they ACCEPT GOD'S PERSONAL WORKS and WORDS. It will not be two thousand years before the LAST DAYS of the END COME; they are SHORT, as JESUS DID the WORKS during the AGE of GRACE in JUDEA. This is because the LAST DAYS are the CONCLUSION of ALL TIME. These are the FULFILLMENT and the END of the SIX--THOUSAND--YEAR PLAN of GOD'S RULE, and they are the END of HUMANITY'S LIFE JOURNEY of SUFFERING. 🙏
My WORK WILL ONLY LAST SIX THOUSAND YEARS, and I PROMISE THAT EVIL'S HOLD OF ALL HUMANITY WILL NOT LAST MORE THAN SIX THOUSAND YEARS either. ☀️
And so timely. I will not continue or delay any longer: In the LAST DAYS I WILL CONQUER SATAN, I WILL RECOVER ALL MY GLORY, and I WILL RECOVER all the SOULS on EARTH that belong to Me so that these suffering SOULS can LOSE in the SEA of SUFFERING, and thus My ENTIRE WORK on EARTH will be FINISHED. From this day forward, I will never again incarnate on earth, and My domineering Spirit will never again work on earth. 🙏
I will only DO one THING on EARTH: I will CHANGE HUMANITY, humanity that is DIVINE, and My FAITHFUL CITY on EARTH. 🌺
But you must know that I will not destroy the whole world, nor will I destroy the whole humanity. I will KEEP the REMAINING PART THREE---the third part that LOVES Me and COMPLETELY SUBMITS to Me, and I will MAKE them fruitful and MULTIPLY in the EARTH as the ISRAELITES DID UNDER the LAW, FEEDING them with Abundant SHEEP and CATTLE and ALL the ABUNDANCES OF THE EARTH. 🌺
This humanity will remain with Me forever, but it is not the vile filthy humanity of today, but the humanity accumulated from My earnings. 🙏 That mankind will not be harmed, disturbed, or besieged by Satan, and they will be the ONLY mankind that WILL REMAIN ON EARTH AFTER I AM VICTORIOUS AGAINST SATAN. This is humanity that I have NOW CONQUERED and GOT MY PROMISE. And so, the humanity conquered in the LAST DAYS is the same humanity that WILL BE SAVED and ACHIEVE My ETERNAL BLESSINGS. 🌺
This will be the only proof of My victory over Satan, and the only spoils of My battle with Satan. The SPOILERS of WAR I HAVE SAVED from SATAN'S ATTITUDE, and the ONLY COMPLETION and FRUIT of My SIX-THOUSAND-YEAR REIGN PLAN. They come from every nation and denomination, and every place and town, throughout the UNIVERSE. They come from different races, different languages, customs and skin colors, and they are scattered in all countries and denominations around the world, and even in every corner of the WORLD. 🏵️ SOON, they will COME TOGETHER to BUILD THE PERFECT HUMANITY, the meeting of humanity that SATAN'S FORCES CANNOT REACH. 🙏 Those of HUMANITY that I have NOT SAVED and CONQUERED and will SINK SILENTLY in the DEPTH OF THE SEA, and MY BURNING FIRE WILL BURN ETERNALLY. 😪
I will wipe out this old, and utter abomination of mankind, just as I DESTROYED the FIRST-BORN BOYS and cattle in EGYPT, leaving only the ISRAELITES, who EAT lamb's flesh, DRINK sheep BLOOD, and STAMP the BLOOD of the asSHEEP on the beams of their DOORS. 🙏🌷🙏
AREN'T the PEOPLE I CONQUERED and became FAMILY the same PEOPLE who ATE My FLESH as LAMB and I REDEEMED and WORSHIP Me? Aren't they the TYPES of PEOPLE who are always ACCOMPANIED with My GLORY? Are they not without My body, the Lamb, and have quietly sunk into the depths of the sea? Now they oppose Me, and now My words and just like those that Jehovah said to the male children and male grandsons of Israel. BUT HARDNESS IN THE DEPTH of your HEARTS STORES MY WRATH, CAUSES MORE JUDGMENT on your SINS, and more WRATH on your unrighteousness. Who will be saved in My day of wrath, if this is how you treat Me now? ☀️
Whose UNJUSTICE can ESCAPE My EYES of PUNISHMENT? Whose sins can escape the hands of Me, the ALMIGHTY? Whose resistance will escape My judgment, the ALMIGHTY? I, JEHOVAH, am SPEAKING to you, TRIBES of GENTILE FAMILIES, and the WORDS I AM SPEAKING to you are MORE than ALL that was SPOKE in the AGE of LAW and in the AGE of GRACE, but you are more stubborn than all people in Egypt. Are you not storing up My wrath while I PREPARE My REST? How can you get away with nothing?g damage from My Sun, the ALMIGHTY? 🌻
From "The Word Appears in the Flesh"
The kingdom that Christ brought down and built from heaven engraved with His Holy name "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD" 💐 fulfillment of (Matthew 16:18) The Lord Jesus said "And I say to you, you are Peter, in upon this rock I will build my Church, that the power of death shall not prevail over her."
💌 So everyone is led here! because this is the last day which means the last age and the last salvation the last stage is the AGE OF THE KINGDOM or the age of the word, in His lowered Kingdom "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD" 💐because the purification of God has come to the individual of the spirit of man ("The Parable of the Washing of the Feet" John 13:5-9)... . EVERYONE WHO HAS AN EAR LISTEN TO WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS TO THE CHURCHES!" (Rev. 2:7,11,17,29 and 3:6,13,22) 🌺

I went to Heijyo-kyo this May with my father (we're both Japanese, but he was visiting a short time from the US), and when I brought him there, he felt a sense of pride and teared up seeing Suzakumon. Being there in person, it's just so astonishing to see how massive it is, the front courtyard stretched far and there's even small Imperial mound graves nearby as well. On the particular day we went, they had a festival where Empress Koken "returned" to the capital and it was a sight to behold. The vibrant colors harken back to it's Chinese influence, and it just felt so special.

Archaeologists say Nara may have been modelled on Chang'an Urban Planning. Chinese netizens apparently failed to get the meaning of the sentence, this speculation is concerned about Urban Planning only and Not really Architecture Style, for instance Spanish cities in the new world followed the Suit of Roman Decumanus and Cardo Maximus, that doesn't unthinkingly translates into ancient Roman Architecture... The only remaining Tang Structures in Chang'an are Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, which ones bear 0 resemblance to anything
Japanese and this is some emprical evidence unlike a thousand claims by CCP Chinazis trying to push their Chinese Supremacy Agenda so bad. While Nara culture was influenced by China like any other period of Japanese History since the 6th century, Both were ultimately 2 different things, it isn't by Claiming French Renaissance was influenced by Italian Florentine Architecture that it was automatically the Spitting Image of Château de Chenonceau, Palace of Fontainebleau, Château of Blois etc.... imagining rebuilding Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio or Palazzo Medici-Riccardi 100% modelled on Château d'Azay-le-Rideau. It's the best way to preserve and showcase history, not only for us but for future generations as well. I hope similar initiatives will also take place in Europe and America.

This is incredible, absolutely breathtaking. As a Dane, I often feel so ashamed that we here in Denmark are so lacking in terms of historical monuments, reconstructions and just in general cultural sights that aren't concentrated in Copenhagen. I recently went on a Denmark round trip for my eighteenth birthday. One of the first stops on my journey was Jelling, I was really excited because I had heard all the hype and history, Jelling being essentially the ancient birthplace of Denmark, with several important "Monuments"
But when I arrived in Jelling, I was beyond dissapointed, almost depressed. There was barely anything of note, and even the ancient runestones and mounds that serve as the ancient burial places of the first proper kings of Denmark, are barely noticeable and all around lackluster. Packed with tourists, there was a shitty little "Museum" and café, which served the most dogwater ass food there is, and although hard to describe, it felt very plastic and fake, with attractions such as the comical "Berserker Box" and a "Monument" representing the ancient palisade walls of Jelling, looking like goofy toothpicks out of a comedy show. All around a bad experience, that made me really sad for my country, as not even our country's birthplace had anything of true note.
Seeing Nara being rebuilt and expanded so faithfully and beautifully makes my heart flutter, it is amazing to see! Maybe one day Jelling will be as significant as Nara, worthy of the title "Historic Danish Capital"... Thanks for reading my rant.

I completely understand complaining about the commercialization of the site. That's a national disgrace, rightfully seen as an insult to your history and your people. Such things should always be handled with respect. However, I do have to quibble a bit with the other criticism. The origins of many European nations, particularly the northern European ones, is Germanic tribes. They weren't great city builders. They were tribal people who lived in fairly humble villages. Even after interactions or conquest by the Romans, great city builders themselves, much of northern Europe's Germanic peoples lives remained simple, tribal, and humble. Dark Age Europe certainly tells that tale for centuries following the fall of Rome, and it wasn't really til the medieval period when we start seeing cities we'd formally recognize as a "city" compared to a (smaller) town or (even smaller) village. Nothing wrong with that. It's our roots (I'm part Dutch, English, Danish, andd French by ancestry). Restoring our past is going to look very different from Japan's or China's efforts during this period because their history is very different. We should not feel ashamed of that, nor of our beginnings any more than we would ask a Native American or Australian aboriginal to feel ashamed of their own humble lifestyle historically.

The paradigm in Europe is completely different .Reconstructions are almost taboo and even if done properly with traditional methods, they are snubbed as modern "Disneyland" by historians and archeologists because they would rather show remaining 2% of the original then to restore it no matter how culturally significant was the building (notable exception Notre-Dame)

It's interesting that people don't realize that the more Ancient Japanese building that were very much copied or inspired from Tang China always had red color, this is a quirk in Chinese architecture that they loved red color! the beam even in Forbidden City today still colored red, while the more Japanese building like Japanese castle stray away from these red colored beam and detailing.
Fun Fact: i've read somewhere that in Ancient China, deep red pigment was super expensive and only used in painting, hence why the building was colored with the available cheap "red" pigment that can only produced orange or bright red color, so it's fascinating that even the color had history.
In Tang capital, the fashionable pagoda was still four sided, pretty much extinct in China at this point, replaced by a more complex six sided pagoda

Whilst I am sure that there is information to be found and some publicity made, the Japanese media and press are not paying much attention. Preferring to focus on new office buildings, malls and especially their restaurants. If they aren't doing that, then they produce variety shows that have become repetitive and more often than not, not particularly funny or interesting. This is a shame as this kind of topic would be of interest to a wide audience and I'm sure that this isn't the only such project that is ongoing in Japan. Well done for putting this together and giving Nara the publicity it deserves.

Because of the turmoil in China in the last 150 years in China a lot of the Tang buildings in the once splendid ancient capital of Chang An were destroyed as well of the ancient imperial palace complexes during the Tang. A lot of the building style of ancient Tang can be still be admired at in Japan, where alot of the building style of the Tang has been preserved. There are still mural paintings in Tang tombs that depict exactly the same style of building that still can be admired in present Japan, like in Kyoto.

You should check out the Yamanobe-no-michi. It's an ancient road that cuts through Nara Prefecture. I was in a hiking group when I lived in Saidai-ji that walked ancient roads and that one, while hard to follow at times, was definitely the best. We came across a few kofun near Miwa that were smaller and left off most lists. You could even see a lot of the stonework on some of them. It can be frustrating though. Came across one that the IJA had bulldozed a path through for moving anti-aircraft during WWII. Still historical, but a lot of damage to an ancient monument.

Just a speculation by Archaeologists that Nara may have been modelled on Chang'an Urban Planning. By the way this speculation is concerned about Urban Planning only and Not really Architecture Style, for instance Spanish cities in the new world followed the Suit of Roman Decumanus and Cardo Maximus, that doesn't unthinkingly translates into ancient Roman Architecture... The only remaining Tang Structures in Chang'an are Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, which ones bear 0 resemblance to anything
Japanese and this is some emprical evidence unlike a thousand claims by CCP Chinazis. That's the bizarre way Tang Revival Architecture operates in China and it looks quite off and distasteful

Fantastic presentation and topic ! It made me think about heritage and historical sites. There are international charters (e.g. Venice charter) setting principles for conservation and restoration : any change must be documented, reversible and visible.
I work as a tour guide lecturer in historical sites in Rouen, Normandy, and in most of them various states of the site exist in the same space. Even later 19th century restorations are kept and conserved.
The difference is in the historical ruptures. Most of heritage sites in Europe can't be restored as they first were because their purpose, aesthetics, economy aren't relevant anymore, whereas these temples complexe remained in use, keeping the memory and the spirit of the place. As tradition endured the same building techniques are still alive and put to use. In Asia there's no problem rebuilding the same temple through time.
The garden complex is the most astonishing to me. Besides its intrinsic beauty I'm really impressed by the quality of the archaeological works and how they served to recreate the garden so faithfully it is as it never disapeared.

The Horyuji Temple is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world and is significant for coinciding with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan.
Umayado no Ohji who organized to built this temple. He was a crown prince and his name means he was born in horse stable and born on 7 February 574 AD,

He was the prince regent of Japan, the honorary leader who ruled in the place of the emperor.
He wrote a famous letter to Chinese Emperor,

This is a fundamental difference between western and eastern restoration projects. In the West, the test of time is also factored in, that’s why you’d never see the Colosseum with its outer wall completely repaired, or the Parthenon brought back to its original state. In the East, they’d go as far as rebuilding structures that are long gone, so that the visitor can “feel” what it must’ve been like centuries back. China has a similar approach too - ancient sights, relatively new buildings.

I actually LOVE that Japan is rebuilding all these lost ancient buildings. Personally, i wish that MORE countries would do the same. I mean so long as they are built using the same type of materials and in the same manner as they would have originally been built, does it REALLY MATTER that they are modern versions? I mean what happens with a building over time anyways? Bit by bit parts wear out and pieces need to be replaced, and over time the building that is standing is NOT the same one that was originally built as EVERY SINGLE last board and nail is replaced with a new one over and over again. So really, what's the difference between doing it all at once or little over time. I mean just imagine if Rome was to rebuild the amphitheater back to it's original glory? What if we rebuilt all the amazing lost wonders of the world like the Temple of Artemis, the lighthouse of Alexandria, the famous Temple of Zeus, the Parthenon or the colossus of Rhodes? Imagine these things still standing to this day, having been rebuild using the same techniques as back then to honor them. People would get to ACTUALLY SEE what these places were like rather than just IMAGINE them or look at drawings of what they MIGHT have looked like. I think these places SHOULD be rebuilt and preserved PHYSICALLY rather than JUST in books and paintings. I also think that when it SPECIFICALLY comes to rebuilding a city, castle or even just a large building, that it should BE USED and NOT JUST built as some museum or something. That if you rebuild a city, then people SHOULD LIVE IN IT and the areas used as a market back then, should YET AGAIN be used as a market. And if you rebuild a castle or large building, then it should be USED as a government building or something. Don't let these places go to waste and end up being abandoned YET AGAIN when a museum or such is no longer able to bring in enough money to keep the doors open.

I like that they are using as much of the original material as possible, but there are no plans to go beyond such; finishing the reconstruction of the complex as faithfully as possible would amazing. Ig the issue is that UNESCO and other archeological organizations get their panties in a twist if you try to do anything with a protected monument, which is fair to an extent, we’ve seen what reckless enthusiasm led to at the site of Troy, but the Acropolis of Athens is so well researched that I don’t think a reconstruction would really sacrifice any ancient knowledge whatsoever.

I am taken by the Japanese aesthetic that looks at its history and, for the most part,
says, damn the cost and the time it will take. those things aren't important.
the same aesthetic currently seems to be able to choose
the most emblematic and best of its past to celebrate and recreate.
(there are parts of its past, both recent and not, that require atonement. it's not all cherry blossoms)
I do worry about the farmland that is being taken out of production though.
Japan is not able to feed itself now. that loss will be felt.
I also worry about the money that could perhaps be used to address
not necessarily better, but more pressing immediate problems.
still, being struck by beauty can sometimes feed us in ways that food can't.
but I am not in the position of need that I know some in Japan are.

I was genuinely impressed with each aspect of what was presented here. I know quite a bit about Heijo-kyo, but there were a few parts I didn't know well. I also enjoyed the visuals. They were very helpful!
I hope more people explore Nara. Everyone knows about the deer and Todaiji, but there is much more to see. Today, it's so much easier to explore beyond the old tourist guides thanks to modern navigation and translation on our phones. If this video tickled your interest a little, please consider taking a bus to the old palace area, the archeological sites and museums, then south to the ancient temples. The usual places are overcrowded and you've seen them a lot in photos. See more!

Fascinating piece, thank you for doing this. I've always found it amazing how structures, town and even cities can vanish over time, ever since I was a child (I grew up in a small town that sat on the Antonine Wall, the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire, and excavations were common, giving glimpses of a place that was both another world and yet our world).

Rebuilding using the ancient plans and methods is so cool, since modern big city Japan is so different. So much can be (re)learned. I like the garden best.

The fascination and vibrancy that Japan exerts on so many people especially in the Western world stems from an aspect of culture that we have lost and they retained, the connection to their own millenia-long history. They live in a continuum, while we live on an island in time, only remembering the bad deeds of our ancestors and wanting them to drown and never be seen again in the depths of history, declaring through our narcissism that we are better than them, extrapolating technological progress to be equal to ethical progress, which is delusional.

Beautifully produced video. This is a very interesting history to learn about. The narration was excellent with good pacing, good content editing, and minimal repetition. No stupid sponsors, "like meh" distractions, begging me to subscribe or give money to their off-platform money collection service, or other garbage, just high quality, extremely professional work.
