  • Today I am turning a simple vase from Black Walnut. I got the stock for this piece from a friend; thanks for the opportunity to make this!

There's just something magical about spindle-turned vases.

    Something you could try.
I use a sanding belt, various grades, turned inside out.
I loop it over the workpiece, and can then pull it against it, and move it laterally.
This allows me to vary the force applied without my fingers getting onto the workpiece.
    It's safer, and more effective.
    😊

You do beautiful work! 🙌 Where can I get the longer tool rest? I have this lathe and the bar is too small. I’m totally new to wood turning.

      Hello!
I got my set of bar tool rests from Penn State industries, which is a good place to but a variety of budget tools. I hope this helps!

Thanks! Most of my turns end up on my Etsy shop, this one, in particular, has been sold.
      Cheers!

If one used a finer cut there is no need for.so much Sanding .It seems to me to much Cutting away ? Walnut is to difficult to Sorce ..omho.

Hey Donnacha! Under normal circumstances, that would be a better system for finishing. The wood I was using for this particular project was rather punky, so the grade of the cut would not have affected the result quite as much as normal. In addition, the sandpaper I was using was pretty dull, so it took a while to smooth what would be a very quick job with sharp paper.
      Thanks for your tip!
