Great minds must think alike. đ€Łđ€Ș. Kudoâs to the fabulous photographer and the incredible Osprey and especially to the fish for being such a good sport about it.
1:24 Osprey are one of the few raptors with opposable talons, which allow them to turn the fish into the direction of flight, making the "cargo" aerodynamic. You can see him do this here. He also takes the time to shake off water weight, thereby sacrificing altitude, then turns on the "afterburners" to avoid going back into the "drink". I always love that move!
Exactly. Like a person surfing on a surf board, one leg at the front, one leg at the back. I used to respect the prowess of the fish eagle, that was before I saw the dive of the kingfisher. Then while I revered the kingfisher, so did I learn the Osprey. Since then, I hold it as number one fishing bird. Though the garnet can dive and swim, it doesn't carry the fish out of the water, except the ones in its stomach.
Incredible! Kudos to the photographer for capturing this natural sequence. Unlike most other " set up" wildlife videos that flood the internet...Thank you.
The sheer power to come up out of the water holding a fish, and take off with wet wings against the wind force being pushed by the falling water from the dam. I thought he was going to lose the fish at one point, but he grabbed the fish and then shook himself off in mid-flight like, yeah, I do this every day!
@@stephenandloriyoung5716 Yes, the bird did align the fish. I noticed that too, where the right leg went behind the left to have the fish aligned with the flight path.
I love how the Osprey shakes his head and neck feathers, and then his wing feathers, while in mid air flight. It enables him to be able to fly better...more aerodynamic if feathers can move in their proper and respective places. What a marvelous airborne/water predator. Amazing and magnificent bird...master of two worlds.

Our creature world demands such respect and admiration ... just calculating all the aspects and ability to pull this off speaks so clearly of an awe inspiring intelligence !!
Also the awe inspiring ability to calculate the bend that water causes. Nothing underwater is exactly where it appears and the osprey has to adjust for that. Really amazing!
Magnificent! That fish weighs as much or more than that bird. I cannot even get back into a kayak if I am in the sea. To think I have to lift my own body weight, with wet feathers, out of water, with my prey struggling to get free, and then take off in flight is mind boggling. Even Olympic athletes could not do that. Nature is so strong. We are so weak. The photography was stunning! That shake in mid flight, just wow!!!! Notice how close to the wall the osprey was. His wings were brushing against the wall. Why? Because he had to come in at an angle where his shadow did not fall on the water and warn the fish of his approach. He calculated his shadow would land on the wall at that angle distance but he would still clear it. As he got to the water, he came off the wall and you can see the shadow land on the water. Too late. His wings also bent backwards and talons first to grab the fish and slice the water cleanly. This bird had to calculate his trajectory before hunting. I'll never call anyone a bird brain again! Smart bird.
I agree with everything you've said, except that an osprey cannot lift a fish that weighs as much or more than it does. They're incredible, but not Superman.
Yes. It's a wonderful video of an exquisite creature doing what it does best. But the fish cannot possibly "weigh as much or more" than the bird. Can't happen.
The average adult Osprey weighs 3 pounds and they eat fish which are generally 4-12 inches in length. It looks like about a 12" fish and the average weight of a fish that size is just under a pound. Therefore, I doubt it's carrying more than its body weight.

Then it dropped 20 ft. straight into and under water and came out with a trout. Funny thing was a crow was watching the whole thing too and chased him around, presumably trying to get him to drop it on land. After a minute or so the crow gave up and the osprey flew off with dinner:) Immediately started searching birds of prey and found out that ospreys are the only non-sea birds of prey that will dive completely under water. Also learned they have a different talon than others that acts more like a thumb, allowing them to hold on to large fish and fly for long distances, holding the fish forward for aerodynamics. Truly remarkable creatures!
Awesome! Excellent Osprey hunting footage! Didn't exactly freefall, by the way - that's more what Peregrines do - yet it was a very fast, controlled dive - the wings of the great bird brushing the sides of the dam wall. What is most amazing is how the bird rose up out of the water, then adjusted the profile of the fish to make it more stream-lined in the air, then shook off the remaining water in it's neck. Awesome footage. Thank you!
It is a must see, but not because of the bird's "free fall", which was a beautifully controlled dive. Because we got to see it reemege and take off, control the fish, shake off the water in flight... and she probably does it day in and day out.

This is the best diving kill video I have seen of any bird of prey. The bird jumps completely into the water as if it was a waterfowl and then flies back up carrying a fish. It would take immense strength to fly off when the feathers are soaked wet. The bird controls its descent by scraping its wings to the wall which is extremely unique. It appears that the 2 dives are different attempts as in the first dive the bird does not scrape its wings to the wall but it does so in the 2nd attempt. It is surprising how the videographer was prepared with high quality equipments on some random water reservoir just for this moment! I would have preferred the natural sound of water rather than the music as it would give a better feel of the situation -
I think the wall scraping was due to shadow of bird. Shadows on water alert the fish of danger. So bird kept his shadow off the water. It was not to control the descent. It was to control his shadow.

Excellent! Back in the '70s' I saw an Osprey flying up of a creek with a fish in its talons. It was a misty morning, and we were driving across a bridge. The sun was just breaking through the mist, and caught the water streaming of the fish. Oh for a camera at that moment!

I saw the real life version of this on a lake once. Osprey was sitting in a dead tree that stuck out of the water about 12 ft. What is amazing is how they get out of the water. get the water off their wings and dry off to get some altitude. Even the way they carry the fish is aerodynamic.

@@sick_shotz_photography7908 you notice how his wings are scraping against the dam wall as he dives? I thought that was interesting, as if he was controlling his descent.
Look up the meaning of "free fall." The last second or so before it hit the water was exactly what "free fall" describes. By that point, the bird had pinpointed the spot he/she would enter the water.

Here in Baja where I live its common to see 2 or 3 hunting at the same time. They are the only Raptor that catch prey with their feet aiming forward and they have a rough surface on their feet similar to Velcro to enable them to hold onto their prey. In Baja they built huge nests on the top of telephone poles. It's quite amazing to look up and see 2 or 3 babies watching you for a few months till they fledged. They have a call that's very unique and instantly recognizable at half a mile or more.
Iâve seen their nests on the poles along the highway headed to to Guerrero Negro in Baja. Theyâre using the poles which are several miles away from the ocean because there are no trees anywhere to be seen in that desert landscape. It was hard to believe they were building nests so far away from the ocean considering how far they had to lug a fish back to the nest.

The first 20 comments or so and no one has mentioned the effect of the whitewater background on highlighting the bird and catch and then the rusty orange and green algae streaks in the center of the frame. Camera work is just as amazing as the osprey is!
Thank you đŻ
Now thatâs what I call ⊠SKILLSâŠđŠ
Absolutely amazing footage of a magnificent fighter pilot/submariner/VTOL-capable and all creature incl. Victory lap and shake off. Just another day at the office. Imagine the thrill, switching to attack mode (claws first) preceded by steep descent, literally brushing the concrete wall, go to dive. Stunning
Thanks đŻ
Amazing video. Thanks. Iâm no bird expert, I only know that I love to watch these amazing creatures on the Rogue River in Oregon. Such power and beauty.
Thanks đ
Ok, props to the Osprey and his skills, but what about flying a drone and capturing this? Freakin amazing skill to capture this. Plus a metal track for sound. Home run dude.
Thanks man đŻ
Fantastic! Thank you so much. The Osprey is my favorite bird and you showed everyone why. :-)
Thanks đŻ
I love Sea Hawks. They are magnificent, and simply beautiful. Good job catching the amazing footage of this gorgeous bird. Thank You.
Thanks đŻ
Excellent! Back in the '70s' I saw an Osprey flying up of a creek with a fish in its talons. It was a misty morning, and we were driving across a bridge. The sun was just breaking through the mist, and caught the water streaming of the fish. Oh for a camera at that moment!
Thanks đŻ
Sounds too perfect. Lemme guess, Fly Like an Eagle was playing on the radio... đ
That is one of the coolest catches Iâve ever seen! Thanks for sharing! Amazing he shook water off in mid air while carting that fish in for dinner! Only had it by one talonâŠthen the fish began to flop and he grabbed it with the other talon to steady it! Awesome footage!
Thanks đ
Wow!! Beautiful footage, such an amazing bird!!! I liked the way it shook itself off in the middle of flight, too. So impressive to watchâŁïž
Thank you đ
1:42 That magnificent shake! And the music made it so much more epic. đŠ
Thanks đ
@@sick_shotz_photography7908 whatâs the song?
Osprey: "I'm just gonna shake myself off a little here, and point this thing forward like a torpedo."
Fish: "I wish I would die already."
All that water coming off that dam, Iâm surprised that the Osprey pulled that off! Thereâs usually a lot of current! The struggle to survive!
it's amazing how the go right in, get their fish and then be able to fly out of the water. i have sat and watched them, really good fisher.
Fortunately I get the luxury of watching these birds in action any day of the week in Florida living 6 miles from the Ocean. They mainly fish in the harbor from the bridge.
Great photography ! Out of the water with wet wings and his cargo , I was lucky enough to see an osprey dive 25â in front of my car and pick up a squirrel in mid flight , so awesome to watch nature in action !
I liked how it streamlined the fish for better flight.
Makes me think of two things: 1) Life is tough -- for both predator AND prey. 2) Anything less than PERFECT physical condition is DEATH for an osprey.
Dinner time
I love that it drags its wing tip on the wall to adjust it's speed and angle just like surfers drag their hands in a tube.
I saw the real life version of this on a lake once. Osprey was sitting in a dead tree that stuck out of the water about 12 ft. What is amazing is how they get out of the water. get the water off their wings and dry off to get some altitude. Even the way they carry the fish is aerodynamic.
Amazing video and such a super strong bird. Excellent job for being in the right place at the right time. Love it.
Thanks đ
I used to sit along the Indian river in Florida and watch them hover, change direction, dive missing fish. Then start all over. The chirping and whistling sounds were so neat.A beautiful bird!
I have a pair of osprey that live in a cypress tree in my pond. I have watched them from the time spent building their nest (which is huge) til watching the 2 chicks they raised fly for the first time. I'm lucky cause I get to see stuff like this almost every day. They are amazing birds.
*GREAT video work!* Such an *AWESOME* bird of prey!
I've been lucky enough to witness this more times than I can count in the 37 years I've lived along the Columbia River!
I live in an area where there are a lot of these incredible birds. They are amazing to look at and watch them hunt.
ME TOO THEY BUILT A NEST IN THE CELL TOWER NEAR MY FAVORITE LAKESIDE WATERING HOLE ...
What area is that? Love to see the sight of an Osprey fishing one day!
@@sr4847 I live in an area called Kawartha Lakes
@@MrDiveDave In ON, Canada?
That fish is like "Owoo, this isn't going to end well."
I live in the Florida Panhandle and Ospreys are everywhere. It's amazing watching the birds snatch fish. I've seen some Bald Eagles snatch fish too. Quite the sight
Wow!! Absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing. đŠ
That's not a "free fall", that's their typical dive. He was just clever enough to find a perch he could do it from! Could have lived without the hyperbolic music. No need to gild the lily! Nice shooting otherwise.
Thanks đ Ya I know how they dive Iâve watched this osprey for years , when he goes of the dam wall he dives totally different then his regular fast dive out of his favorite tree đ ya music is not for everyone but I like it
@@sick_shotz_photography7908 you notice how his wings are scraping against the dam wall as he dives? I thought that was interesting, as if he was controlling his descent.
Definitely đ
Look up the meaning of "free fall." The last second or so before it hit the water was exactly what "free fall" describes. By that point, the bird had pinpointed the spot he/she would enter the water.
Gild not guild
Yep, I have to agree- some truly excellent camera work, from beginning to end, capturing this entire event. Great job, really enjoyed watching this!
I was thinking "are you gonna drop it" and he answered with a shake of his head!!! André
I agree with you Lynn, awesome footage of a beautiful bird!!
Thank you đŻ
How lucky us humans are to have such magnificent creatures in our world - the Osprey of course.
My all time favorite bird!! Had them on the salt water bay at my house on cape cod and the lake next to my house here in Colorado!! Fresh fish every meal, they rule đ
Wow! Great film shot! A high dive, on target no miss fishing champion appears to turn catch into a majestic windsurfing ride. Beautiful đđ€
Just diving for dinner the champion says with delight.
Thank you đŻ
0:27 Osprey:
âI wonder if I could . . .â
âScrew it. Thereâs only one way to find out!â
âYeeeeeeehawwww!!!â
đ
That's simply amazing how they can catch fish so well! Excellent videography too. Thank you!
Thanks đŻ
I'm most impressed by how the osprey always positions its catch along the axis of travel to reduce drag. Amazing!
Awww The birdy is taking its chum out for a flight.
Upon descent, The wings hit the damn wall multiple times, but has no effect on flight. Super powerful predator!
Majestic bird.Damn awful annoying music.
If you can call that noise music...
What a beautiful bird. You are so blessed if you ever get to see one.
WowăâăThat's Badass Hunting & Fishing like a ProđđœMaking the necessary adjustments in flight. Very Cool filming/editing as well. Bell/Boeing picked the perfect name for the V22 Ospreyđđâź
Amazing footage. To see them adjusting their feet and shaking their head and wings mid-flight, breathtaking. Wasn't enamoured by the music but footage was so good you have to continue watching.
Thanks đŻ
I saw an osprey catch a perch similar to this. I was on the Okanogan River in Washington state. Thanks for the awesome footage. đ
Thank you đŻ
The first 20 comments or so and no one has mentioned the effect of the whitewater background on highlighting the bird and catch and then the rusty orange and green algae streaks in the center of the frame. The photographer has created a great piece of modern art. Exceptional! Of course, ospreys are superior divers and hunters, but this photographer impresses me by watching and waiting too. Thanks to the trout in the supporting role.
Thank you đ
I love the way the osprey uses the thermal created by the waterfall to gain lift, kudos brilliant photography.
Thanks đŻ
I can't believe it shook it's feathers mid-flight without missing a beat! Had to get rid of that water weight.
What a magnificent creature, amazing power.
The imagery was stunning, especially against the backdrop of the waterfall, well done đ
Thanks đŻ
Living in upstate NY and fishing the St.lawrence river, I would watch osprey pluck fish out of the river all day ...amazing to watch ..even on the days I caught nothing đ
I have witnessed this bird âŠdoing this 20 feet from me as I sat on a pier âŠ. It was AWESOME
I love the Osprey we watch them all the time dive into the ocean when we're down our place at the Jersey Shore. They had one h*** of a comeback after becoming endangered.
Yes they are amazing birds đŻ
awesome aerial attack, awesome photography
Thanks đŻ
Fish is like âDude, I canât breathe!â
Epic video, super cool watching the 2nd jump seeing his wings scraping the concrete while he's diving - these birds are so entertaining to watch.
